Good tutorial. The only thing I'm not sure if you forgot to mention or didn't know is if you are to download a game straight from the market place to the external hd, the dl time will be greatly decreased. Just a "more you know" fact for anyone new to using an external hd on their console. The games themself though seem to play and load pretty much just as fast, so dont worry to much about that.

The reason for the missing .2 TB is due to hidden system files on the drive that make it work. That's why an advertised 500 GB Xbox One only has anywhere from 360-369 GB of storage available to you.

2 TB advertised = 1.8 actual TB, not because of the xbox formatting as another user claimed, but because computers speak base 2 (binary) and humans speak base 10 (decimal). In the binary system, to be exact, 1 TB = 1024 GigaBytes... and 1 GB = 1024 MegaBytes ...and 1 MB = 1024 kiloBytes ...and 1 kB = 1024 Bytes. But humans like to think of "kilo" and "mega" and "giga" meaning 1000 (decimal), not 1024 (binary). Hard drive manufacturers have long used this common misunderstanding in favor of rounding down to make things easier (and also provide less storage space in their products). If you do the math (using binary values): 2 (TB) * 1024 (GB) * 1024 (MB) * 1024 (KB) * 1024 (B) = 2,199,023,255,552 Bytes (2.2 trillion Bytes) But the hard drive manufacturers always have a little disclaimer on the package stating that they use 1 MB = 1000 kB (or similar). So, if you use the decimal calculation of 2 TB, being 2,000,000,000,000 Bytes (2.0 trillion Bytes) and divide by 1024 (the binary value), which the xbox does in its calculation, you get this: 2,000,000,000,000 (B) / 1024 (KB) / 1024 (MB) / 1024 (GB) / 1024 (TB) = 1.818989403545856 TB or (1.8 TB) Meaning the hard drive actually only contains 1.8 TB, but the package says 2 TB, because people don't like technicalities and it allows the manufacturer to give you less value for your money. Q.E.D.

FYI you can buy a pc external drive and format it on the xbox but the drive has to have photos on it first before you plug it into the xbox. Hopes this helps and saves you money.

Each external drive has an operating system installed. This takes a small amount of memory. There's also other pieces of software or firmware that'll allow you to do things like formatting the drive. I hope this helps.

@@r4.robertt can’t really say, I’ve looked everywhere and here what’s I know. You can unplug the hard drive when you’re done, just make sure the console is turned off, you can do this by pressing the power button for 10-20 seconds, to know it’s fully off the orange light will appear on the power brick. You can do this if you like, but it won’t extend the hard drives life I believe. So might as well just set it there and leave it alone.

I've got a question for you. I bought a 2TB Seagate external hard drive about 4 months ago. I had issues with detection and formatting at first, but they got resolved and my EHD worked great... until recently. I was downloading the new MW update and it finished quicker than normal for such a large download. I start the game and but it wouldn't load properly, so I hard reset my Xbox, sign in, look in my games and 2/3rds are GONE. I look at my EHD and there's no light, but it's still humming on the inside. I have done everything I can think of (short of buying a new EHD or USB cable) to get my Xbox to detect it with no luck whatsoever. Do you have any idea how I can fix this? I haven't found a video that answers this problem...

I found a solution. It's very simple and should be passed around to wanting more game storage: Don't buy from Seagate. I've seen nothing but complaints about their EHDs and have found no real solutions from their company about it, which leads me to believe they know they're fucking you over and don't care. I just bought a 4TB Novus EHD for $160. It's superior to Seagate in every way, even worked the way it was supposed to the second I plugged it in. Imagine that... TL:DR - Seagate EHDs suck. Never buy them. Go with a different company.
