I remember using my old RAC timing light to do the same job. Also slows down traffic if you mistakenly point it at approaching traffic.

It didn't look like you were getting a consistent spark. I would probably read that as a misfire, like a random misfire but I'm not experienced using these checkers. Reason I'm saying this is I have a misfire on cylinders #1 and #2 on our '02 Lexus LS 430 but if a good spark looks like this I don't know what a random misfire is supposed to look like.

This is due to the frame rate of the camera. not a misfire.

That’s correct. The camera can’t keep up with the speed of the spark. So it looks sporadic. Similar effects have been noted when I do videos featuring led lights, the lights flicker on camera but not to the naked eye. Thanks for watching. Please like and subscribe

@@BillOfAllTrades2016I see, that makes sense now. Yes I've made videos of an LED tailight that I installed in my Harley that looked like it was flickering in the video. Also, come to find out I had a misfire on a 3rd cylinder on our Lexus too, I fixed it. It was 3 bad coils. It's ran smooth since. 👍

I dont think you have to reconnect the breather or any other critical components that enable the car to start. As long as it cranks you can have an assistant check for spark while its cranking .Every rev should produce one spark. Correct me if I'm wrong (used to this with old cars when they had points and dizzys.)

You do need to reconnect the breather to the throttle body because running the engine without it on will allow unfiltered air to enter the engine as you are testing which is not good. Furthermore as the engine is running without the breather attached it will not be pulling air passed the MAF sensor so it will run erratically because the sensor will be giving a reading of no air coming passed it. Always have everything attached properly when performing any kind of test to prevent damage. Modern engines are sensitive. And very costly to fix if careless mistakes are made.

Thank you for this detailed tutorial. One question I have is if I am getting a misfire code and I get spark after testing, then this test is telling me that my spark plug is good but coil is bad? No spark means the plug is bad and not necessarily the coil pack? Thank you!

easy to test the coils just swap it with one which does not have the misfire

This tool is only going to tell you whether or not power gets to the spark plug, it has nothing to do with how much power or even if the spark plug or coil are still good working order. There are specific tools for testing the quality of a spark plug.

So what if your vehicle isnt starting how can you tell if your getting spark?

If your vehicle isn’t starting at all this isn’t the tool for you. Does this check the spark plug or the ignition coal?

This device only tests the coil pack. It’s title on Amazon is misleading. If you want to test a spark plug for spark there is a gadget shaped like a box that you plug into your outlet and put the spark plugs into it and watch if they spark. What if its under my manifold and I need to check spark?

You would have to remove the manifold, take out the ignition coil, put the manifold back on, then perform the test with this tool. Seems like a lot of work but with this tool that’s the only way it can be done.

That spark should be consistent not intermittent

The spark was consistent. The camera on my phone is not able to capture the fast speed of the cylinder firing. It’s like when you see a led light flickering on camera. It’s not flickering to the naked eyes. The frames per second of the camera aren’t fast enough.
