I can't tell you how much us beginners would appreciate you sharing your classes on how to make your own inexpensive tools to work with raw wool. I'm one of many who will be making this carding board (thanks to you!)! The cost of tools is very prohibitive but I'm determined. I have bags of gorgeous fleece staring at me and I can't wait to get started.

This was so useful, I found it whilst searching for drum carding videos and it will make carding much faster for me!

Fay Cotton Don’t worry I wasn’t bothered by that at all! Your talk through of the details on why you designed your board, with the gap at the side for the brush gap, where you put brads and why you had an edge on the left was very useful. It made the process of making a board myself seem very doable.

i just purchased a 12x12 carding cloth and needed to find information on attaching it to the board I bought. Very helpful. This is my first time out preparing fiber for spinning. I thought that the blending board would be multi-purpose and I can see from your video I made a good choice for me. Thanks Johnnie

I finally found this again.. Yay!!!!!! Thank you. I knew I wasn't crazy thinking I could make one. That is awesome. I just received 15 fleece free and I am ready to learn, wash, stuff dog beds, slearn to spin, and maybe even weave. I love to crochet and I look forward to doing it with my own thread. Thank You again.

These boards are great for blending different fibres too! You can produce a great art yarn from all your "bits" on one of these. I borrowed a friends drum carder recently & found it didnt get a fine enough finish for me , but this is a great pre prep tool without all the setting up entailed with a DC. I shall be investing in one fo these very soon!

Next best thing to sliced bread! I made one (a bit smaller), because without a table top comb set and "real" wool combs combing took too long, and carding with hand cards (I use broad dog brushes) just isn't my cup of tea. I use it to card and roll the rolags from it, and now the wool comes off fluffy, a lot cleaner and easy to spin. And it is so much faster!! Thank you so much for sharing your experience!

This is really cool. I am using a dog brush to comb and pick my washed fleece clean. I then spin my fiber from the brushed locks.

Love the DIY. Right up my alley. I'll have to make one. Another tip for holding small nails is to either poke them through a piece of paper and hold onto the paper or a wooden clothes pin (the type with a spring).

I also read a tip to use a bobby pin to hold nails, even easier!

I bought a couple of hand carders, old ones and one was really missing a lot of teeth so I ordered a small piece of carding cloth. I think it cost about $15. I successfully repaired the old hand carder, but had some left over and nailed it tightly to a piece of plywood. It is a rough idea of what you have shown here. Whats funny is that I use my carding "board" more than I use the repaired hand carder. I try to pinch pennies when I try a new project and sometimes something wonderful accidently happens! Great video...thanks

I bought a bamboo cutting board (Amazon) with a hand-hold build in & a piece of carding cloth from an Etsy seller. Total cost for brand new materials including shipping: $50. (Already had a flicker brush & dowels.) No keel--but I could make one and might.

Is this the same way you would replace the carding cloth on old hand carders? I have a set of antique carders that need new cloth.

This is brilliant. I'm thinking of getting into spinning, and honestly the cost of the tools is what's been keeping me from trying it- but this is a great way to do it. Do the long carding cloths come in different finenesses? Would it be good to have a few of them, and maybe put velcro on the backs of them to swap them out?
@MsFaan11 жыл бұрын
Thank you for your comment. I agree that tools are expensive for a beginner, you are not alone. I volunteer teach a course on how to work with raw wool and teach how to make your own very inexpensive tools. You have just encouraged me to make videos of how I make cheap wool combs, diz, etc. The carding cloths do come in many finenesses (good scrabble word eh?) but Velcro will not cut it because carding really pulls and it WILL lift off. But you don't absolutely need to card to spin. Angora wool and many fine wools don't need to be carded. You can also comb wool. And if knitting or crocheting with wool are what you want to do, you don't even need to spin. You can knit combed wool. Keep posted, I'll put up more videos you might find useful in January. Happy Holidays

[i'm really enthusiastic about spinning and i tend to get excited when anyone mentions an interest in giving it a try, so pardon my long reply. ] agreed. i started spinning when i was in grad school, living on a tight budget. i quickly learned to make my own drop spindles from wooden dowels and wooden wheels from the model-car aisle of the craft store. add a small screw hook and a few drops of glue to hold everything together, and you have a drop spindle that will last for years. ten years later, and the only "real" spindle i own was one that was given to me as a gift by my sweetie. all the others were made from that initial investment of about $10 worth of materials... and i still have parts to make more spindles. the first real investment you may want to make as a spinner is into a wheel, as it really does multiply the rate of yarn production over a spindle. you can improvise a niddy noddy from materials around your home (my FiL made me a set of interchangeable niddy noddies from PVC pipe, which i can use in situations where i would not want to get my wooden one wet) and an umbrella swift is useful, but you an survive without it. basically, all you need to get started is something to spin with and something to spin. don't go shelling out money for expensive gadgets until you know that you really are hooked, and even then, try to DIY as much as possible, then gradually replace those pieces with the expensive stuff as your needs and budget dictate. happy spinning!

I LOVE your post! I am a newbie to spinning my own yarn. I, too, made my own spindles, which work great! I also made a niddy noddy out of pvc---no worries about it getting wet. I am in the process of making my own spinning wheel, mostly out of pvc also. I got lucky and was able to get the pvc when it went on sale. A neighbor found me an old bike wheel in the weeds...works perfectly for me!!! I can't wait to finish it and put it to use....

Great video. I love your easy going, no stress teaching style. Just a thought. Would a piece of that rubberized mesh carpet underlayment be a good idea glued to the bottom of the board? I might have to search the net for Howard Brush Co. and see what the going price is for carding cloth. Great,great video.
