Picking my first batch of Roselle! Thanks for the great video! ❤️❤️❤️

So happy you learned something from it. Unfortunately, I lost half my crop in the summer and the squirrels just wiped out the remaining fruit. 😣

@@SouthernLatitudesFL no way. This has been one of the few things the squirrels didn’t get. I feel blessed. Gonna make some jam with them! 😍
@SouthernLatitudesFL3 жыл бұрын
@@bonnieclark5307 I was going to pick them and they were gone. My squirrels have definitely figured out the food forest is a great source of food for them. They enjoyed Starfruit, berries, passionfruit, etc. I am so happy you got plenty. Enjoy that jam.

@@SouthernLatitudesFL thank you! I’m not sure how those pesty squirrels missed them! They eat EVERYTHING else.

Saw your community post and had to check out the video. Very well done and I learned a lot, never heard of this plant before.

Thank you for watching it! Many of us grow it in Florida but it seems to also be popular across India, Malasia, Philippines too!

Look up some recipes especially from Australia. They use the seed pots as the pectin to thicken the jam. Don't throw those out. You can also find cranberry sauce recipe and a Caribbean rum drink. Eat the leaves in salad too. Look for st Kitts roselle seeds they are fatter and juicier then the thia ones (good for tea) . Southern seed exposure sells them

Yes and Yes! I have a part 2 that has the jam part. I love the drink too. Last week, a lady sent me the Kitts variety of seeds! I look forward to trying them next spring!

Looks like I will have many like that too. Some are naturally falling off before I get to them, as well.

Mine is in a container. I would like to keep it no more than 6'. If I trim the top off, will it sprout new branches? Also, do I have to wait until after flowering to harvest?
@SouthernLatitudesFL4 жыл бұрын
Hello Osceola Gardener! I have not seen it work like that. Mine have not gone over 9 ft before flowering and putting on calyxes. Then, it seems to be done. Maybe others can keep in perennial but mine took a frost hit and didn't recover. I had to start from scratch. They grow fast.

Hi , can i use the dried one to make a jam??

Hello. Yes! See Part 2 of the video. I will show you how to make jam.

I am growing Rosella hibiscus for the first time this year. The calyxes are small and they are just starting to bloom. Do I wait till after they flower and clothes back up before I pick them?
@SouthernLatitudesFL2 жыл бұрын
Yes you should wait until they get bigger and even have a slightly opened end of the calyx. I did pick mine a little small last week and feel I missed out on the full benefits of the larger ones. Great that you're growing them!

Hi can I store sorrel drink in a large home Depot bucket? Thanks
@SouthernLatitudesFL4 жыл бұрын
I haven't tried to store it longer than 3 days in the frig. That's kinda the timeline I do with my sweet tea and fresh orange juice. After that, I can't help you. I usually just make mine fresh with the dehydrated sorrel leaves.

How many rosella petal for 250 ml?
@SouthernLatitudesFL2 жыл бұрын
Maybe 4 calyxes. Each calyx = 4 petals. Hard to say.

Isn't bowling kill its nutritions?))
@SouthernLatitudesFL2 жыл бұрын
Boiling does kill nutrition but that is how we make tea and get it to steep with flavor.
@isac00142 жыл бұрын
you do not need to pull off the green parts.... they are just as useful as the red part. I grew up in the Caribbean growing and eating this, and almost everything on the plant is edible. The seed head you save for seeds and compost.
