How To Use Barcodes And SKU's

This video gave me some more clarity in operating my business. I have been operating my business now for just over 2 years, when I started out I used random barcodes off the internet until i was advised by a business colleague that I should/can purchase them. I purchased barcodes, however, I had already started selling wholesale to customers prior to. Fast Forward to now, I was tidying up my inventory records and decided to assign the purchased barcodes but did not inform one of my wholesale customers unintentionally, this caused a problem for them. Now they are asking to use SKUs instead of UPCs. But my SKUs are 10-12 digits and they require no more than 6 digits so I am trying to find a way to reduce the alphanumeric digits of my barcodes but make it convenient for both us as a business and my wholesale customers.
