Good instruction video , you may have just prevented an accident , those chain ratchets are basically a come along , similar to whats used in mining and construction 😁👉👍✌️

Those chain binders you showed last are so frustrating, the newer style ones that you showed before it are SO much better. Especially because you can tension with your body weight by pulling down, instead of trying to tighten sideways. They're newer style ones are much safer too, especially compared to the old dog ones. The old dog ones are great, but you've gotta know what you're doing and they can be very risky in the rain too if you're using a pipe to get more leverage. Great video by the way, you're doing an excellent job teaching people things they need to know.

About 18 months ago on the Warrego just outta Brisbane there were a couple of Hillbillies towing a medium sized John Deere tractor with front end loader on a large car trailer. They had a single 6mm strand of Telecom rope around each wheel of the tractor ,that was it! That car trailer was startin' to look a bit bowed & the bucket was resting up in the air just above the tray of the 6t Isuzu truck unsupported. It's shit like that which makes you look for another industry to work in!

Good video. Ratchet straps make it so easier compared to ropes. Mind you, I always liked to carry rope as a backup. The first way you showed with the straps is the way I have always done it.

Your way of using a ratchet strap is the right way. To undo using the other method you would use lower stomach muscles and risk giving hourself a hernia by pulling up. The ratchet dogs (shown last) are hopeless. I much prefer the dog type ones or the first ratchet ones you showed. Probably should explain that chains must not go around a tie rail but only around the uprights. I saw a load of cable reels about 3 weeks ago, and the chains were tied around the tie rails!

Yeah I didn't explain where to chain it to the rails. I was in a hurry again. I think I'll make another one down the track and fix up all these mistakes.

Hi from France, i ran general freight out of Melbourne / Geelong for years (Blakiston's)back then we had dogs and chains, with the infamous dog bar,then hide it all under a tarp,if you know,you know,didn't have too many straps back in the day,i've got a lovely scar on my forehead when the dog bar came back and hit me straight in the head,eight stiches,i,drive a tanker now.

Gday Jonno , When I was still driving we called Straps Load Binders we didn't have Load Binders till much later But we did have Ropes , Dogs and Chains and some thing called Tarps , you spent all day loading and all night driving unload next day and start again , ah the good old days No it was bloody hard work but I'm glad I did it , I'm 72 now , I've been to some of the places you go but not out west , say from SA up and through Queensland , ( love Blackall )

Gday Johno . When I discovered those yellow handle ratchet binders it changed my work life. So quick and easy. I was using those other ratchet binders with the 90 degree handle and the over centre dangerous ones you didn’t show.. People put a piece of pipe on the yellow ones and bugger them. Just drive a few k and retighten and they won’t come loose 😁

I always do straps up 'the wrong way'. I find it much easier to take the initial slack out with one hand by pulling up. I've never had an issue undoing them, just a firm tap down on the handle and pull the excess back theough.

Thanks old Mate for the explanation. I still shudder when I see the loose end of the chain being stored away as I had a Mate who got his elbow destroyed by a loose chain. He was driving at night between Cloncurry and Mount Isa in the 1970’s with the window down and his arm resting on the door sill. A road train coming the other way with the loose end of the chain flying about and it struck him on the elbow. Ouch and he had deformed arm for the rest of his life

But you don't know the writer so it's hard to see what he meant. You will then be immediately suspended on FB or Tik Tok{Tez}. LOL. It is how the viewer or reader takes it in. Sometimes someone interprets a funny written text completely incorrectly by the reader. Like you did last week on FB at Big Rigs I thought. You made a joke about the number of viewers of a trucker vlogger. I got the joke. But you got some nasty reactions from people who saw it as arrogant and a nasty comment and not as a joke. That creates unpleasant situations. But in a video you can emphasize a comic text or situation through a facial expression or body language. Like you did in this one. Act. Is to emphasize, exaggerate, those qualities that you possess or want to express. For example, when we took driving lessons ,100 years ago, we were not allowed to look into the mirrors out of the corner of our eyes, but we had to turn our heads so that the instructor saw that you were looking in the mirror. That is not possible with a written text. How ever. Just like Ken and Tez, your a person where I would like to drink a beer at the bar. { that also means i m in Australia.lol.}And believe me. It's been 13 years since I did that. LOL. Hmm. Sorry. I write to much again. But they say that people ho write a lot don't speak so much. i think thats tru. haha.

That 2nd method on the ratchet straps is most strange, cannot see any advantage at all, love the loose end method, brilliant 👏. Never seen the first chain ratchet binder before, the 2nd one is standard in Europe i think, the previous ones with an over centre feature are banned. Great job on one handed filming and working 💪, thanks for sharing.

I was doing it very similar rolling the excess strap with a hole in the centre but once you push the strap through the centre of the roll instead of looping back over the roll I was looping it over the tightened part of the strap above the ratchet. It did the job and given that my truck is a rigid with curtains it was probably good enough but your technique is much better and more secure. Hope that makes sense.

Awesome mate. I’m sort of a late starter in trucking. I’m 55 and got back into it in Feb last year. I started back in the early 90’s delivering chemicals, had my DG and all. Things were a lot different back then…my career led me onto different paths but I always loved trucks and never got the chance again till now. I always wanted to drive a Kenworth! 😊 At the moment I drive a 15t 2019 Hino rigid around Melbourne and love it, I work for a great company. One day I will get my HC/MC and have a go. Good video....some people once you learn it never goes others may forget or maybe in fridge trucks so don't tie anything down so never learnt....I admit every few yrs or bored ill download to read the latest road rules, heavy vehicle hand and load resistants books to keep up to date in case there has been any changes im not aware of....it's a bit of advice I can give to even seasoned drivers, I've been almost stung not knowing that certain rules or road laws have changed....what I do recommend is if a new driver is getting into interstate is to get your hands on the road rule books of all states you would be surprised that there is some difference and may bite you and if you get an ass of a cop and you say you not from the state it may not fly may results in a fine....also if it's a road rule that has changed since getting your licence a cop will say it's up to you as a professional driver to keep up 2 date....

@@RoadTrainAdventures yeah my last job the contract was delivering for Syd tools from the DC Sydney to stores in melb and qld and believe me most stores and locations should of been done in a rigid truck....but no I soon become a huge hater of Melbourne when it wasn't the city it was the contract some delivery were locked up at nights so couldn't park up in side so had no choice to roll in peak hour and have to preform difficult and sometimes illegal moves to get into site....when I get stressed and angry my concentration becomes shit.....and its not like you can stop get out have a smoke calm down not when your taking up all lanes in the middle of doing a left hand reverse with cars not stopping....

Ha ha I do ratchet straps both ways, depending on the load. When it’s done the way you dislike I do the loop through and tie it off to the tight strap so it isn’t long like you had it, aren’t we allowed only 6 inches of overhang? And I’ve met a lot of people that can’t use chain binders and wanted to go back to dogs. But they are pretty easy if you get it right first up. Great video man very informative

Thanks Brad. I once the old dogs too. I had a 1 metre pipe for it. So fast to get set up. The 6 inches of overhang? If you're talking about the overhang of the Binders age ratchets I believe they can overhang to the width of the ratchets.

I don't know. It's rare that I allow a twist in it. I didn't know that it twist more with no twist.

A lot of our drivers will airway oil on the chain ratchets and wind them in when not in use. That's pretty well all we do.

Do you use any of the truck winch straps. No loose ends. All on a roll. I've driven a few trucks with that style of strap. With the standard thread through sort I'm one of those double back guys. And then I tie the excess off above the ratchet. Probably not the Aussie way. But I'm not Aussie. With the chain binders I've only used the old ratchet sort. They were most commonly used. It is like the rope truckie hitch. There must be a dozen ways of doing that. I use two or three. Especially if it is raining. Version I was shown to stop slip on wet rope. Have to secure that load. Your responsibility.

Just because you can't do it the other way doesn't mean it's wrong, they probably think your way is wrong. Truckies have different ways of doing all kinds of things and as long as what they do is safe and legal and even if it's different then what you do it doesn't mean it's wrong, it's just different.
