How to use "cá" and "lá" in Portuguese.

The words "cá" and "lá" can be pretty easy to understand as adverbs of place in Portuguese, but easily confusing compared to "aqui", "aí" and "ali". Also, when used in emphatic expressions the meaning of the word changes significantly. In this video, I will walk you through the most common expressions with "cá" and "lá", so you can identify how these words are used in daily conversations.

-lo/la/los/las are direct complement pronouns. The l is added to verbs that end in s, z or r. Vou comprar uma casa -vou comprá-la ( I’m going to buy it). Lá and -la are pronounced differently. Hope this helps!

This is so useful, I've been watching O Sábio and they use lá a lot in conversation and I realised that "Sei lá" must mean "I don't know" and not as I was trying to translate it "I know there"! :)

Olá Heiko! A palavra "acolá" é menos comum que as outras e normalmente é usada como um "ali" mais longe. Pode-se apontar para o acolá. Exemplo: O carro está ali ou acolá? O meu vídeo da semana passada foi todo em português. Eu gosto de ensinar em inglês, mas vou ocasionalmente fazer mais vídeos em português. Já tenho vários, se procurares. Boa semana!

O acolá é um regionalismo (é usado sobretudo no Norte). Eu por exemplo nunca digo ali ou além mas acolá ;)

I need some help.with this, lá negates the verb sometimes, 'sei lá = I don't know' but emphasises it other times, 'lá vou ... = off i go'. Is there any guide to knowing when it's negating and when it's positively emphasising?

That's a great question but unfortunately there isn't a rule. I would suggest adding these slowly to your vocabulary so you can be comfortable using them. Bons estudos!

“Já cá canta” for “I’ve got it under control” or “It’s in the bag!”

Como traduzirias esta expressão que nós usamos muito" Olha este gajo"? Look or watch this guy? Na escola, costumava a dizer, e a ouvir " Olha meste". "Olha este cromo" Eu acho que "olha meste" só se usa no registo oral, e não na escrita. Eu sei o que significa, mas não saberia traduzir essa expressão para a língua de Shakespeare. Esse lá e cá são difíceis de aprender, já que se usa muito na linguagem coloquial. Num curso de português não se aprendem essas coisas. Só se aprendem contigo jajajaja. Eu desconhecia esse tal so nessa frase. I am so not going to the party. Na língua alemã, há imensas palavras desse jeito. Deolinda- My grandmother -Zé, tú sabes lá o que estás a fazer. Nem sequer tens 18 anos. José - Oh vó, não me trates como uma criança, eu sou grande e vacinado. Zé, va lá abrir a porta. By Sónia, José's sister - Sónia, és uma chata do caraças, by José. Eu digo "tou". Então Sandra, estás boa?
