I love the watercolor crayons, I have been using them for 20 years. There are so many ways to use them. Try using a small brush with water on the crayon and use like watercolor for fine details. You can also use thin gesso to active them instead of plain water, that gives a more smooth pastel texture.

Get a palette before you go to sharpen the crayons, because you can totally rewet the shavings! I like to use one of the cheap plastic folding palettes, put the shavings into one well for each color, and then press them down and add some water until the shavings are covered. When dried, it kinda looks and works like gouache, and no waste! I don't sharpen every single crayon, I just sharpen the ones I really need for details.

Wow-this was SO comprehensive. I really appreciate the amount of work you put into this and the various ways you used Neocolor 2s. I purchased 10 of them -my local art store sells them individually-and having so much fun. I feel like it has really loosened up my work and allows me to be more spontaneous and take more risks.

I got mine (40 set) a few years ago and i love them. Bought a lot more colors of them over the years open stock. I am pretty happy with what i got now. Also if you need a sharp edge you can also just take the pigment right of the crayon with your damp/wet brush :D

Thank you for the demonstration and sharing your process with the Neocolor II pastels. I’ve been struggling with these and waiting for the moment when I fall in love with them. Your suggestions about the textured paper and the emphasis on their use in creating texture within an image really helps me. 👍

This medium is SO appealing to me! If I didn't have so many unused art supplies already, I would be buying them today. I actually went to Amazon and added them to my cart, but I'm resisting. I would love to see more of this though because they look like a lot of fun. Maybe you can convince me that I can't live without them. Haha!

They sell them open stock at the art store. (If you have one in your area)..you could just buy the primaries

I got myself a set of these for Christmas last year, but I've barely used them (mostly because of work busy season, but still!). I'd love to see more content around them. Anything to get me re-inspired to create with them.

I prefer to use them on primed paper (with gesso, matte medium, matte acrylic paint, or watercolor ground) because they blend easier (wet or dry) and there's no paper texture. I like the organic textures and marks the crayons themselves create, but the repetitive paper grain annoys me. They're also my "secret" trick to fix failed watercolor paintings 😁

Loved this! A small set can be very versatile if you mix them. White can give you pastels, and more water allows you to layer them. I also started with a small set and made lots of mixes on my palette, creating many options for sich a small set. It was so much fun that soon I wanted more options. I am checming out your course, it sounds fun!

Hi, lovely video, as always 😊 I bought the 10 piece pack years ago and I use them to make colourful backgrounds that I then cut to use in scrapbooking. I think I need more colors to actually color something just with them, but I wouldn't know how to choose 😱😱 So many options 😅 Thanks for the video 💐

Temu has a brand of water soluable crayons called Sunny. They are very nice, come in packs of 25 and 12 (I think). Costs can vary but I recall them being about $12-15. Great, metal tin container. Comes with a water brush and sharpener. Also, Jerry's Artarama has Caran d'Ache pencils and crayons sold in sets and singles, if you need refills, about $2.50@

Carandache makes a pallet that you can scrape the crayon onto it then dip your brush into that. Great for mixing colours…then you can control your line width.
@MrsBarnabas8 ай бұрын
A much cheaper option is a plastic food chopping board from the supermarket kitchen aisle. Mine is roughly the same size and cost €2 / £1.72 / $2.15. It's currently £14.32 on Amazon UK! (It used to cost about £6), €14.67 on Amazon FR, / $12.91 Amazon US.

@@MrsBarnabas you are correct but i dont have the space for a large chopping board on my art space…but you could find a way to chop it down to a smaller size,

@@Bunnykisses1000 Hi, Bunny. Neither do I. 🙂Miine is exactly the same size as the Caran D,'Ache palette, amd it could be cut down to a smaller size (as well as being expensive, I think the CD palette's way too big anyway! 😄).
@GraveDesiresArtАй бұрын
I got essentially the same thing (white textured plastic chopping board, maybe 6” x 9”-ish) for $1.25 @ dollar tree. I haven’t seen the official brand palette in person, but from photos they look very similarly textured. 😊

I enjoyed your informative and delightfully creative video. I have never used these crayons, but usually use watercolors, water colored pencils and acrylics. So of course I have questions. When finishing a piece, does it need to be sealed or use any protective coating?
@NoeticNotary-sx1ec8 ай бұрын
Thank you so much for your new content ❤
@Carter-333 ай бұрын
Definitely sharpen your pastels so that you don’t have to use them sideways. When you sharpen them, save the shavings in individual watercolor pans, add a few drops of water, mix it, and then let it dry completely. Then you’ll have a Neocolor watercolor palette. I just got the 84 set and I got some diamond painting storage containers so that I have a sealed container to contain the shavings to be used later as watercolor paint.
@VisualMind3 ай бұрын
Thanks for the tip! I started a palette with the shavings but I got too lazy to sharpen them with a knife 😅 I need a suitable sharpener

Unfortunately I don't own any hot press paper at the moment! I've used them on smoother paper though and they do blend a lot more into the paper / have a lot less texture

If a person has an excessive amount of watercolors, would these be necessary? I’m new to them.
@VisualMind8 ай бұрын
Necessary no 😅 you could use watercolors and then use regular crayons on top for the texture! But these are fun to play with :)

I got the Mungiyo WC pastels and they don’t blend or dissolve well…or maybe I’m just being impatient.
@VisualMind8 ай бұрын
I haven't tried those but did you try different types of paper? Maybe a smoother paper works better :)
@Fallen53217 ай бұрын
I don't know what it is but I have never been any good at using neocolors II. Use in colouring books as backgrounds, but every time when I first add crayons to paper, lines get left behind no matter how much water I add to get rid of them; either that or streaking/blotching and not being able to create a smooth blend. Like this lady said cartoon like or like a child drawing. I just end up getting really frustrated. 😤😤

You’re pressing too hard with the crayon. And then using too much water. Try again 😊
