How To Use Comfrey To Boost Soil Fertility

In this sort video ‪@projecttreecollard‬ explains how Russian Comfrey is a great plant to have on your homestead to attract beneficial insects and boost soil fertility. Comfrey is often used in a chop and drop technique where the nutrition of the comfrey leaves help build soils as a mulch applied to the soil surface. Bocking 14 is a wonderful variety of comfrey that does not spread by seed, and thus is less invasive.

Borage is not a dynamic accumulator that I am aware of, so it would not have the same benefits. That said, you should definitely compost your old borage plants. My chickens seem to like eating comfrey and borage!

Is it a must to let it bloom before harvest? Im pulling leaves to feed rabbits and quail but the plants aren't very old yet. I dont want to kill them. How old are the ones in your garden?

No it's not a must. Just don't feed the rabbits and quail more than 1/4 the leaves if the plants are young and haven't spread yet. (Then you would be overharvesting and preventing them from spreading much) I have 4-5 clumps that are about 2 feet in diameter and they are 5-17 years old. I don't know where you live, but tree collards are a GREAT food also for those animals. My outdoor rabbit is 11 years old and lives on tree collards mostly.

@@projecttreecollard I have 2 young tree collards now but I currently have many more animals than I can feed with them since they are my husband favorite greens and he eats them all!! I need to propagate more!😁
