Excellent explanation of counter steering. Most of the time, you just hear, "You have to counter steer," but what does that mean? It's the "...brief period when we apply the force on the handle bars to change the lean angle..." Your explanation of initiating lean is the easiest for most people to grasp, and is simple - initiate lean opposite the turn direction so that the bike can turn into the direction desired. Plus, you are not leaning, only the bike is. You are actually staying upright, allowing the bike to lean beneath you.
@daszieher2 жыл бұрын
the "funny" thing is that "you" and the "bike" form a shape-shifting vehicle with a moving centre of mass. "pressing" the bike into the turn (i.e. staying upright while the bike leans) is more related to comfort and oversight than to physics. although keeping the torso largely in one space lowers the moment of inertia around the roll axis facilitating quicker leaning at slower speeds.

I have watched maybe 10 videos about countersteering and this one is the best. I never really "got it" before, but always felt people were explaining it wrong. You explain it right, at least to me. As I suspected, it's something most of us do intuitively already. This is not just how I turn a motorcycle, bit often a simple bike as well. The principals are the same.The best way to describe it is the slalom feeling I get shifting my weight side to side and letting the front wheel turn almost buy itself from side to side. Kind of a fun way of practicing, I think. Yeah, it reminds me of slaloming down a hill as I ski. My head and torso are weaving ahead to where I want to go, while my hips and knees. following from the back from roughly 90 degrees in the other direction, then reversing in the other direction. It kind of feels like I'm using my hips to steer. Great video on a difficult topic (for me). You can learn math by reading about it, but you can't really learn to ride a horse until you actually do it. After some struggle, one day it just clicks, and the fear disappears. From there you can just get better and better.

9:23 This is the core summary of the entire topic! Countersteer is any change of handlebar direction that is opposite to lean angle. Thanks for separating the leaning from turning! We can even expand the understanding. When we are done turning, we briefly turn the handlebar ‘more inside’ to make the bike stand up. It’s also the same countersteering. We better call it “the principle of countersteer” instead of treating it like some special technique. All self-balancing objects must move its lower body outside in order to lean inside. All bikes change the lean angle by the principle of countersteer. Turn right to lean left, not go left.

The instructor said to basically push into the steering the way you want to turn- so push on the left handlebar to turn left, which does the same thing, but I didn't understand the physics or what was happening. I didn't know we actually wanted to turn the wheel slightly the other direction and I was using bodyweight as well. thanks for clearing up everything!!

Brilliant video - even better than a couple of other great videos on KZbin, and that is saying something. What is really tough for me is that I have already learned this stuff subconsciously for years, and it scares me to start just pushing handlebars just to see what happens! Why bother then? is a good question. Answer is I now live in a region with very much more challenging and mountainous terrain, and it has given me a shock as to how much more skills I need to not overcook bends or come off on wet corners and gravelly roads - if I am ever to keep up with traffic that is. Going deeper has undermined my confidence at the moment - like I say I have done the easier bends for many years, or just gone very slow for the occasional one - but I think in the end practice and understanding what I am doing will make me a much better and safer rider. Shame I can't do rider courses, but if you can ride to one safely at traffic speed from where I live, by then you will pass with flying colours.

When, sometimes, I tried to communicate this information, it seemed to me that the fact that you could mantain up a stopped bicycle just by acting on the steering was enough to demonstrate that it was the steering that kept you up, but it never worked for anyone: as you say in the video, the answer was: I haven't never done counter steering! Bravo
@gonzalopizarro7172Ай бұрын
Hi! I've been following your videos since 2023, and they have been really helpful. CONTEXT: I started with a 150cc bike (like the ones used by delivery workers, straight position, 140kg, a lot of steering movement), then I went to a 250cc CF MOTO sport (sport position but not too aggressive, 170kg, little steering movement). Up to this moment, everything ok with all the techniques I practiced. Basically, friction zone, clutch and throttle control, counter-steering (initial input) and then let the motorcycle self-steer, vision and brakes. All of that made me really confident riding my bikes and works perfectly fine. RECENTLY I rode my dad's Honda CBR 600 RR supersport, and just one thing change: the self-steering characteristic to maintain the radius given same speed, same lean angle and no steer input. I was at 20km/h, counter steer worked fine, but as soon as the motorcycle started to lean, it did not maintain the lean angle after I release pressure from the handle bars; instead, I felt a really weird feeling and the bike started to stand up. I tried another time and I realized I had to keep pushing the handle bars into my intended direction, as if counter-steering was a CONSTANT PUSH on the handle bars, something that it is not true for my other bikes. I asked this to a professional pilot here in Peru that rides for Honda Racing Company in the National Championship, and he told me it was because of the steering suspension and that as the bike is at very low speeds it does not want to keep turning or leaning more, so it stands up, but I didn't quite believe it. I'm trying to be fully aware of what is happening and if I'm making any other input to the bike, but so far I haven't noticed I'm doing anything different, but the bikes behaves really different. My dad does not feel that weird feeling, but he does not consciously counter steer nor let the bike self-steer, so it is common ground for him to always fight the bike to turn. ANY EXPERIENCES RIDING A CBR 600 RR o similar bike, and is there anything I have to do different in order to feel comfortable with the bike? Really appreciate if you make a video about the fundamentals of riding but with a full-blown supersport bike. Thanks for the answer in advance!
@MotoControlEnАй бұрын
@@gonzalopizarro7172 Hi! Different bikes do behave differently, so you have to tweak some of your riding style to fit a particular bike. However, just in case - check the front tire pressure, what you described really resembles the half-empty front tire.
