@@marcus4046 The one where 10 Imperial soldiers took the Stormcloak capital that was defended by 10 people? I'm sure that canonically in the lore Windhelm has thousands of citizens rather than 60something but the only depictions we've been given of the Elder Scrolls has cities being smaller than small villages were in our equivalent time so it will be weird hearing about Tiber Septim leading tens of thousands of men into battle.

That's always a risky maneuver. There's the risk of miss coordination or having the front broken. Or again the enemy could hide troops on one or both flanks for a counter-encirclement. Usually it works, but, there are always problems and inconvenients.

A lot, but maybe not in pure form. I've seen a lot of outflanking and envelopment, as well as holding a part of the line with defensive troops, while winning elsewhere with concentrated forces, then redirecting those troops towards the rest of the battle.

Probably depends on the title tbh. Also it would heavily depend on the troop type and how much morale they have to being with. Might work out with Rome 1.
@Edax_Royeaux
@Edax_Royeaux 2 жыл бұрын
This tactic is not viable at all in Total War. In Rome 2 your infantry would be totally annihilated before they have time to give up an inch of ground. In order to appeal to casuals, the melee combat between formations lasts about a minute or two before one side is routed. No to mention the units have no object collision, you can compression a hundred thousand troops into a single acre and it wont mean anything to the game engine as the units will just phase into each other.
@hebl47
@hebl47 2 жыл бұрын
@@1Maklak Yeah, I figured. I mostly played M2TW, ETW and Shogun 2. There I just mostly softened up enemy with ranged and then flank with cavalry. Never tried those fancy faints, crescent formation etc. But with how morale works, I honestly wondered how many of these would even work.

I used this tactic a lot in Rome: Total War, though I didn't know it got a name. Another version of this tactic is to place weaker units in the middle and stronger ones on the flanks, so that they quickly break out the opponent's flanks and come from the rear to his center.

Kind of did this to defeat Hannibal in the opening ambush of Roma Surrectum 2 mod for Rome total war. You are meant to lose it, as it’s remaking carrhae. Except I never engaged the centre, a “wings only” combat occurred and pinned down the carthaginian centre, so I could assassinate Hannibal with my cavalry in the rear. Combine morale shock with unharassed cavalry, and it’s my favourite moment in any real time tactic/strategy game.

Because Hannibal's one was a double envelopment and he completely surrounded the Roman army. The formation described here gives the enemy a chance to flee and is usually sufficient to win a battle. Hannibal's tactic could also backfire as cornered soldiers can fight harder since they have no choice, give people a chance to run and they'll often take it.
