This is not quite accurate. I advanced to "Carlos nos dijo la respuesta" and supposedly "nos" is the direct object pronoun. "[L]a respuesta" is the direct object in this case; "nos" is the INDIRECT object pronoun. If converting the statement to object pronouns, the pronouns would be: Carlos nos LA dijo.

You are correct. Direct Objects answer "what" or "who" of the verb. Indirect Objects answer "to whom" or "for whom".

What is the pronoun for the word "it" or "that" in a situation where the gender is ambiguous? We use a generic "it" all the time. It seems like the verb "ser" is conjugated in 3rd person in many cases. That is very confusing for English speakers. "What time is it?" "Do you get it?" "Did you do it?" "That is to say,..." "Did it hurt?" "That is exactly what I warned you about."
