Luke, you do not know how useful your tutorials are to me. I'm 57 years old, in my 20s I was a DJ, I remember using only the Technics SL 1200 MK2 and a Rane mixer. Now everything is much simpler and at the same time more sophisticated. Now I have the passion again and I am studying a lot to update myself, you are one of my mentors. Unfortunately I have no budget to buy my DJ equipment, I'm working with an old Pioneer XDJ R1, but I dream of having the Denon SC5000 and X1800, maybe with the Prime 4 StandAlone. Someday I'll get them, I hope the years do not overshadow me. Thank you Luke, for your entertaining videos, very illustrative and with excellent lessons. Your music work is impeccable, too. HP filter + some delay or echo on buidlups also works great in clubs for me, it really brings up the energy :)

I use echo on 3/4 to add tons of extra energy with drums during the 4th/8th bar. As well if the breakdown is lacking some element or energy, I will echo the hell out of it to keep some energy before a melody/drums kick back in.

Here's my question for Ashley and you; Did you start off with a long distance relationship? If so, how did you make it work? I'm personally pretty crazy about someone from the US (I'm from Belgium) and I want to fly out there and see how we can take steps from there to make it work (not long distance forever of course but for the time necessary) but at this point, she isn't exactly very positive about that it can work... Is there anything I can do to convince her?

Quick question about the "adding effects to add energy" - If it adds energy and makes it more exciting/sound better - why isn't it produced like that in the first place?

Just in case Luke does not reply....this is part of crowd awareness and personal choices. If during a set you played high energy mixes from beginning to the end you would exhaust the crowd and kill the dance floor. Same can also be said if you have taken your dancers to a certain place and you want to give them more and take them higher,then using FX to enhance and increase energy ( esp on a drop ) can send them and prepare them for the next energy level song. Longer sets require an awareness of physical dancers as you need to give the audience / crowd breathing space peaks/highs as well as chill moments...song selection plays a big part of that but your ability to add personal flavour to increase/ decrease chosen songs energy through FX adds to the overall set with its highs and lows.

One thing I like doing is, hitting the delay for one extra beat ever 8 or 16 steps. I have a heart for deep dark techno, and it's one quality of that sound, I enjoy applying other places, and if done properly, only the kick is doubled. On my nob, it's about 65-75%.

I want to mention from experience that adding energy right before the drop is often not a good idea because when you end all the effects at the drop then the drop seems less powerful comparatively Especially as you did it, we could see the master channel got way louder and then when it dropped went back to normal. Usually I try to have the opposite effect where I want the drop to sound louder, more punchy so I’ll filter it etc

hi luke, i've got a couple of questions regarding producing. how do you balance your kick and your sub bass? do you use sidechain compression or LfoTool? also how loud you usually put both of them in the mix. What are your thoughts about about the standard effects on pioneer or denon mixers. I generally prefer the xone sound. But I use the Rmx500 effects mainly with my xone43 or djm900nxs2 or colour FX on the djm (only space and fun echo mainly) when I use that mixer. Because I feel that stock effects tend to get too generic after a while. When I use the Rmx500 with a xone mixer I find the filter has like very eeery sound which someone may enjoy only if they really like noise rather than music lol. But because it doesn’t calibrate with the xone perfectly it’s fun especially when there are solo synth breaks. However the Rmx is a goto for me as I feel I can get more creative with effects as I feel mixer stock effects are too generic. If I’m drunk in a club obviously I don’t understand. Also what are your thoughts about using effect pedals if you have used that in your production or with turntables in the past maybe? Definitely not worth a new topic but if you could touch upon that sometime even for a short while (maybe in a production tutorial as well maybe?).
