To be sure with a cold tank during the day turn on one switch and listen carefully for a boiling noise if none is heard in about 60 seconds try the other if it comes on in the day it uses peak rate electric. Hope that helps

The water will remain hot for a few days as the tank is insulated. It works like your fridge but in reverse The bottom immersion is the chesp one and only heats the water over night using off peak electricity it has a thermostat so only uses electricity to bring the water up to temp then turns off so if you don't use any the water will still be hot and then not have to heat up . The top one us a backup and uses expensive electricity I am trying to grow my channel if you can could you please subscribe thanks 😊

Hey mate, checked a couple of your videos and you're a bit of a genius with this stuff so I'm hoping you can help. I've tried both my landlord and energy supplier and neither have been much help. I have 2 storage heaters; one quantum rf and one sunhouse. I have an immersion tank and economy 7. When I moved in last week I turned both switches on on both heaters and set them both onto the "out all day" setting and 19 degrees. My immersion heater has a pin timer, so I set that up to heat the tank between 3-6am. Somehow I'm paying £10 a day for electric with pretty minimal usage. I've noticed there were 2 other switches in the immersion tank cupboard (besides the one connected to the pin timer) both titled "storage heaters" - but the storage heaters have their own switches (x2) next to them on the wall. I've just turned those 2 switches in the cupboard off as they don't seem needed unless I'm missing something. What are these switches likely to have been?
@DeathLazerBoy
@DeathLazerBoy Жыл бұрын
Thanks for the support please consider subscribing to help me grow the channel Very strange set up not too sure about the switches marked storage heaters in the airing cupboard. As for the pin timer controling the Immersion. Do you have 2 consumer units or 1? If you have one the whole property becomes off peak when the economy 7 flows If you have 2 and the pin time works in the day then its heating water using peak rate electric even at night What i normally see is 2 distrubtion boards with a breaker on each board for the hotwater one expensive and one cheap
@wirezts
@wirezts Жыл бұрын
@@DeathLazerBoy Already subbed :) Yes from the research I've done it's unusual to need additional storage heater switches besides the 2 directly connected/beside the heaters themselves. I'm going to turn the ones in the cupboard off and see if the heaters still charge over night. I have 2 fuse boards but it seems like the tank is wired up to the main consumer board not the eco7 one - as you said, I can choose to have the immersion tank on any time. I've read in some placed that it was still worth heating my water at night, but as you've said if it's going through the peak board then even at night it's going to be that rate, right? The tank only has one cable coming from it, not split into top/bottom :( Still think the 2 storage heater switches is strange so they're going off until I see they stop the heaters working. Thanks mate!

@DeathLazerBoy Жыл бұрын
Tha ks for the support. If at least on of those unused switches is connected to the off peak supply it would make sense to change the hot water to one of those doing so will reduce the cost of your hot water but as you have single immersion you wont be able to top up in the day. Unless you (or an electrician) changed them to sockets and put a plug on the Immersion that way you can choose pk or offpk to heat hot water
@wirezts
@wirezts Жыл бұрын
@@DeathLazerBoy yeh heating the tank at night and storing it would be ideal as I also have an electric shower so only use the tank like twice a week for a bath. It's all probably a bit too much hassle to change for the minimal hot water I use so I guess I'll just leave the tank off and heat it as needed a couple of hours before a bath. I just don't understand where all the energy is going to justify ~£10 a day as a single occupant of a small one bedroom flat!

Is there a thermostat adjustment that can be made as I find that I need to add cold water when I am having a shower as the hot water is just too hot. I know that the shower mixer valve cools it down but what is the point in heating water up and then having to add cold water to get a comfortable shower?
@DeathLazerBoy
@DeathLazerBoy 2 жыл бұрын
Water should come out of the tap at 50 degrees or over ( max 60 degrees - risk.of scolding ) as this stops the growth of bacteria like Legionella, to do this it is advised that stored water is kept at 60 degrees. Any more risks lime scale build up high running costs and scolding . To adjust your the thermostat on your immersion. Isolate the electric supply remove the cap on the immersion, normally done with an 8mm nut and then adjust the +/-. The temperature change can take 24 hours to happen, due to insulation and mass of water. Hope that helps Thanks for the comment if you can, please subscribe to help me grow the channel

Hello, I recently moved into a property that has a immersion tank (ideal heating instinct). I am on economy 7 but all the storage heaters were removed and replaced with electric heaters in the renovation. My tank has 2 switches one for day peak rate and night off peak rate. My question is do I need to leave the tank switched on all the time as we only need enough water for 2 showers a day and maybe a bit for washing the dishes. I currently have an issue with my E7 metre where it is not registering the night readings so it hasn’t changed on the night reading for over 2 weeks. My energy supplier are looking to send someone out. However my main question is do I really need to leave it on or can I just turn the tank on when I need it? For example turning it on an hour or two before I need hot water. Thanks :)
@DeathLazerBoy
@DeathLazerBoy 2 жыл бұрын
Normally you can just leave it on all the time as then immersion has a thermostat which turns off the immersion when the water is hot, but after the renovation and your off peak E7 not registering any usage sounds like your new heat is running on the peak tariffs E7 is designed bto do all the heating and hot water on the off peak tariff But it sound like the heating and hot water is now done on the peak tariff from what you said If this is the case you have 2 options install storage heater to run on the off peak tariff of change the meter to run on a single rate Either way relaxing storage heater with panel heating will always increase running costs

If you are on a single rate tariff it will cost the same as boiling the kettle to heat water in the tank however the tank is insulated and let's you have hot water on tap If you turn the bottom one on it will heat the whole tank and the top on will only heat to top part of the tank. The immersion have built in thermostats so will stop heating the water when it get hot enough. The water should come out of the tap at between 50 and 60 degrees C if it is more turn the thermostat stat on the immersion tank down the cap is normally held on with a 8mm nut turn off the power first Please support my channel by subscribing if you can thanks

Usually I would just heat the water at the night and the heater would come on between Midnight and 6am - however now I have noticed it is still on much later around 8am - would you have any idea why it has changed as that time in the morning can't be off peak times? Check the time on your electric meter as if it's economy 7 it will have an internal clock and switch which turns on the off peak circuit (night rate) whilst the peak (day rate ) is supplied 24 hours a day Peak, unrestricted,Day is 24hrs a day roughly 20p kwh lights tv sockets washing machine etc and the top element of the hot water Night, off peak,restricted is 7 hours normally 23:30 to 06:30 roughly 10p kwh supplies storage heaters and the bottom element on the hot water Please see the other videos in my playlist and subscribed I am planning a video on the new Dimolex Quantum RF series which have a different software then the other Quantums

Hello, I've recently moved into an all electric flat (no gas at all). I have an immersion water heater with the on peak and off peak switches. The on peak works perfectly fine, supplying me with hot water within 30 minutes of turning the switch on. I have the off peak button turned on constantly but I never get any hot water in the mornings. I'm convinced that something is up with off peak heating element. Perhaps you could give me a pointer in the right direction? Any help would be much appreciated. Thank you.

@DeathLazerBoy Жыл бұрын
@TheLocalBiscuit Sounds like the off peak isn't working, check the off peak distribution board to see if the Immersion switch is up and on If it is on you will need to replace the Immersion or check the wiring. If its a rental just report the fault. If not you will need to drain the tank and isolated the supply or get a plumber / electrian It is definitely worth doing as peak rate is expensive and using off peak is much cheaper. Thanks for supporting the channel please consider subscribing as it helps growth.

Normally the wire going to the bottom immersion is the off peak immersion If however the water goes cold with the top one turned off and bottom one turned on your "OFF PEAK IMMERSION" Is faulty. These immersion coils can fail, but check your fuse board first as it could be off there. Thank you so much for your video. I am currently using the Joule Cyclone 205L Direct which is similar to this with 2 immersion heaters and I am on a single standard tariff (with different electricity price every 30 mins). However something different from other users here is both of the switches have got no labels on them so am I right to assume that it's the same? I usually turn both on for 30 mins and there will be hot water which seems to last for at most 2 days so I just repeat this method every alternate days. Would it be wise to turn the bottom one on during early hours when prices are usually the cheapest so I do not need to turn the top one on? Many thanks in advance

Hi there, thanks for making this video! I have exactly the same setup, and I'm in desperate need to understand what's happening in the background, as even a plumber has failed to explain to me. I don't see you having any sort of timer switches, analog or digital. (Me too) The two immersions are simply connected to two "normal" power sockets. (Me too) I have indeed subscribed the Economy 7 tariff with Bristol Energy. My question is: which device is actually timing the ON / OFF peaks? If I turn on the immersion on the OFF peak socket during daytime, and if I hear the immersion working, that can't be right, right?

The bottom one is normally the off peak immersion as heat rises. This can be checked by turning it on in the day a listening carefully if it makes a noise, if I doesn't then it off-peak. The off peak circuit normaibecomes live between 23:30 & 06:30 If unsure you can always check with one of these as they are quite cheap amzn.to/422fI2f Dimplex Duos are quite good compared to older night storage heaters, but are really not any good compared to the current dimplex models. Hello! I have recently moved to a property with Gledhill EnviroFoam cylinder. I am on Economy 7 but I only have one switch? Not sure how I should use this to make sure I have hot water during day but not pay fortune to heat it… is that possible to only have one switch and still take advantage of economy 7 tariff?

Hi Lisa Thanks for watching. If your single Immersion can come on during the day then it is using peak rate electricity. If you have 2 distribution / fuse boards It can only use peak rate electricity. You will then need a seconded off peak supply added replace the Immersion for one of these www.cef.co.uk/catalogue/products/1144757-27-dual-element-twin-thermostat-immersion-heater This will save you having to change the cylinder (the long bit is off peak and short bit is peak) However if you have 1 fuse board / distribution board and and Economy 7 meter the whole property would go off peak during Economy 7 hours usually 23:30 - 06:30. So that's when to heat the water (check the time on the meter and go from that ad it can be wrong) this will save 30% to 50% in hot water costs timers can be added if you only have 1 board but if you have 2 boards a timer isn't needed I hope this helps please consider subscribing to help me grow the channel

Great video! I live in an all-electric flat and have this same setup (Thermowatt Alloy 800 on top and Thermowatt ERP at the bottom). However, I am on a standard rate tariff (£0.35 per Kwh) and the two switches are labelled “On” and “Booster”, with the bottom element labelled “Booster”. How do you recommend me to use this setup? I currently get over £10 a day on electricity (smart meter) and I noticed it’s mainly used by the bottom element (if I turn it off, electricity usage goes down below 500W, and with it on, it goes to 3500W).

If you are on a standard tariff it costs the same a boiling the kettle to heat water. Do. You have 2 consumer units and storage heaters? If you do. I would. Definitely switch to. Economy 7 tariff done by phoning your supplier

@@DeathLazerBoy Thanks for the reply! I just have the one immersion hot water tank (like the one in this video, but the switches for them read “On/Main” and “Boost”. I contacted the energy provider and they ran a usage history of my account and mentioned my estimated daily usage would increase to £17 if I switch to E7 (around £0.45 peek and £0.18 off peak). Will it cost me more to just turn everything off (both the MAIN and BOOST) and only switch them on maybe an hour before showering etc.? That’s the only short term solution that I can think of. Switching to a E7 would mean a £159 job + downgrading from Smart to Non-smart meters etc. Your thoughts would be appreciated! Thanks!

So you dont have storage heaters ? Is your shower a mixer shower or electric? The hotwater tank shower have a thermostat stat built in to the immersion which stops the water getting too hot it can be turned up or down by turn off the switch and removing the cap on the immersion

@@kiloton1920 we have electric oil and natural gas system boilers that do heating and hotwater with a stored water in a cylinder and a back up electric immersion oil natural gas and electric combi boilers that do the heating and provide instantaneous hot water. But also we have economic 7 which is where the electric companies sell off electricity at night at a lower rate so electric storage heaters and hot water tanks can heat up on the cheaper electric as electricity is more expensive then natural gas these are often properties which are located I rural areas and not covered by the natural gas network.

@@DeathLazerBoy we have a similar system here with pge and cheaper rates at night but they aren’t cheaper by much and if you go above a certain amount of use per month or “tier” as they call it, your rates double or triple each time, so your punished for the more power you use. This is mainly done to tax the cannabis growers in a way they can get away with and say is for the “environment” some illegal growers have 20,000 dollar power bill, all the power too them, but I’m just saying pge knows what’s going on and they turn a blind eye and act like saints.
