This video shows how to use tube expanders for tubes found on brass instruments. T.his increases the diameter of brass and nickel tubes to fit snug but still works. This is crucial to ensure an instrument that hold air

There is a trumpet with a main spit valve tube that jumps out when played. Would expanding the removable tube slightly be appropriate or what could work?

Could this tool also be used to remove bore spacer sleeves from tuba valve slides?

Potentially, but if they are tight it won't work as they add pressure inside the tube. Unsolded and tap out is probably the fastest way, imho.

On the instrument you used in this demonstration is that red rot or rust on it? With that much discoloration would such an instrument be worth salvaging because the metal might be very weak or very thin in those areas?

very helpful, what's the part numbers on those two tube expanders you're using, the small and medium for inner and outer slide tubes?

Hi there. The expanders used are from Ferree's Tools Inc. Found on the web at www.ferreestoolsinc.com. The tools are N35 and N36 for small and medium. N37 is the larger one. They also have long versions as well, which are the N5 N6 and N7 units. Type in expanders in the search box and they will come right up.

The expanders are our friend if we understand their purpose. It really isn't to expand but rather to true up the tube to it's original size.

You are technically correct, however the only time you would use this method of expansion is when the client could not afford the correct repair of replacing the tube or was needed asap for some reason.

Excuse my ignorance here, but if the outer portion of the inner slide has been 'over sanded', causing a loose fit...wouldn't the expansion of just a small section at the open end of the tuning slide effect the least amount of wave change due to tube size change...while still sealing for air leakage?

as an after thought: is there a tool in this case that will evenly 'crimp (for lack of a technical term) a small portion of the outer tube/lead pipe at it's outer end to maintain pressure/lack of leakage while maintaining original bore throughout? BTW, an excellent educational video.
