It probably is referring to the CAN network, which is the Controller Area Network [on cars]. Connection problem I would imagine. Check for loose, broken, or dirty connections in the problem areas.

I was so worried because I had this same issue the two lights plus the abs as well. And tried so many things and nothing worked. I played this video and right after it finished I turned on the car and the lights where gone! I’m so happy. Not doing burnouts ever again 😂 learned my lesson

I have a 2014 mustang gt an when i shut the advancetrac off as soon as i get on it a little it comes back on both traction control an advancetrac like i never shut them off. Only sometimes will the 2 yellow lights come on but when i shut the car off an turn it back on they go away. It does it everytime i cant even do a burnout. If i do what you said in the video think it will work?

Good video, I just reset the exact same issue but I did it by disconnecting the negative on the battery while keeping the ignition key open all the way without the engine running, kept it disconnected for 5+ minutes and connected the negative cable with the ignition key open all the way, this clears all your soft codes in the pcm and satellites , code was gone and has not come back. Regained all 3 options on advancetrackk and operates now as if it had never been tripped, I created it also with a hard launch with traction control on. I saw this in another video, can't recall whom it was to give him props. 2011 GT

@@ashleyworld738 Sorry for the delay , had been in a longggg road trip on my bike...don't know in your car , mine has an actual key on the keyhole to start...please, refer to your cars manual on how to have the ignition system on "accessory"or "run" mode, that should do the trick, your car has to have those 2 modes, maybe run is set automatically when the key is within range of the car.....

Hi. My 2 light and the Service Advance Track came on my 2013 Mustang GT. A great shop in town has the super High end tester. He said it shows "Steering wheel angle position sensor". Is that something I can change and even after new one is installed will I still have to have that code/info cleared? Thanks

The steering angle is an integral part of Advancetrac. It makes perfect sense to me. When the angle issue is corrected, the device should clear the codes and resync the system to turn out the lights.

I cannot stress enough the value of having your system checked using a VCM3 or compatible systems tool. That should find an issue. Intermittent issues are always the toughest.

Took my daughter to school turned in the parking lot and BAM service advance trac now everytime i back out of the drive way and take off it dings at me every time going to go through these and try to figure out the issue! Cause that thing sure is annoying! Thankfully I have all my rear end upgraded so driving in the rain with no advance trac and nitto 555 i haven't slid around like i knew i would if it was stock with no trac control but the lights are driving me nuts. on the plus side i got a drift car.

Sounds like your car's system network is not communicating properly with the computer. There are reasonably priced scanners out there that can diagnose and resolve comms issues. I know someone mentioned a device name in this thread, but a good search online provides a decent list of choices.

I recommend finding a reputable shop that has VCM3 equipment (or compatible) to run diagnostics and/or re-initialization of your system is the best place to start. The MATCO MAXIMUS 2.0 is such a device that will do the job. That was the device used on my car. Keep us in the loop on how it turns out.

sounds like a communication issue. Maybe just a loose or dirty connection. Check your sensor connections at the wheels for starters.

this is very thorough we appreciate it man, if i can add .. i have the same problem and my check showed that stearing angle sensor was foulty also the car keeps breaking like the system is engaging and tomorrow will see if changing the sensor will fix the issue

Great video Greg. Here’s a question for ya. My two “sliding cars” icons will randomly come on up while driving. They will appear for about 3-5sec then disappear. If I turn manually traction control off or advanced trac off it’ll work for a short time, then reactivate and those two symbols will show up. If I try and do a burnout the car will automatically kick it back on and damn near stall the car out! Keep in mind i do not have the factory wheels on the car. Any thoughts??

It sounds like the HCU may be having problems itself or communicating with the ABS that is attached to it. I would have someone (not the dealer) check the system and maybe re-initialize the HCU/Advancetrac system. Does it throw any hard DTCs? Mine never did. Does the "Advancetrac needs service" come on too?

Doc's Boost It does not throw any dtc codes, I did check with my SCT x4. And I’ve never had the “Advance track service” message pop up like in your video. I do think my buddy who has a shop locally has a Matco device so maybe the re-initialization is what it needs

Sometimes when I blast my sound system it will also turn on and off my TC as if its related to sound??? Im going to also look into finding a VCM to reinitialize my HCU.

So I'm confused, i didn't do a burnout to cause this issue so is this still the fix? It got below 30 degrees in Texas the other day and now ever day it's below like 50 degrees and my cars outside and I turn it on this function pops up and locks my steering wheel. If it's normal temperatures then it goes away and i have no issues.

Wow, that's different. I would find a reputable garage with a VCM3 or compatible scanner and get the system diagnosed and/or reinitialized for starters. Locking your steering is something new to me but the electronic assist steering is part of the system your PCM controls.

I had to drive it home yest in 20 degrees w the steering and traction bugging out cause I didn't wanna leave it outside far from my house. But it lit does the same thing you're showing with the two lights and not going away even by restarting. Once I got my car warmed up decently the first two times it happened and cleared the code it stopped showing up but yest it got super cold and frosty and heating it up and clearing the code didn't help.

Good question. Some people have told me that if you disconnect your battery and touch the two cables together (positive and negative) it clears some issues and makes the computer renegotiate terms with systems connected to the CAN. I cannot attest to this fact because I think I mentioned that in the video and it didn't work for me. Nothing is harmed for you to try, Please, make sure both cables are removed from the battery before you do this. Or you can check out ForScan and see if that is something you want to download and install. It's free but you will have to buy a cable. Full instructions are on the site and there are many YT videos about it. Good luck and let me know how it goes.

That's an interesting condition. It sounds as if the CAN (your car's network) loses the ability to see and communicate with the HCU, which is the heart of the Advancetrac system. Because the situation presents itself only when you turn either direction to the stops, I can only imagine one of the front wheel sensors is damaged or loose. I would have the system check by a reputable shop having a VCM3 or compatible device that can run diagnostics on the HCU. The device used on my car was a Matco Maximus 2.0 device, which does a great job performing the necessary tests on any of your car's systems. Keep me in the loop as your issue unfolds.

Except when this happens to me I get the 2 light and the “service advanced trac” indicator and then my power steering goes out until the lights go off. If both lights come on when you turn the steering wheel all the way to the stops, it may be a sensor or sensor connection problem. Sensors are cheap and easy to replace. The testing can be dauntless and expensive. If I had the problem, may buy one front sensor (I think right and left are the same part number) and replace one side and test. If it still happens, switch sides with the new sensor and see if the problem goes away.

I wouldn't thing that both sensors would be problematic at the same time. So switching the new one from side to side should do the trick if it is a sensor issue.

Hi, Joe. I think the part about your steering not working is key here. Your car's power steering is electric, not hydraulic. With that in mind, you must also know that traction control depends on the steering wheel position, throttle position, the rotation speed of all four wheels, and a few more things so the computer can make good decisions to maintain the stability of your ride while driving when things start to go off course. I would check connections to the steering control box first. Make sure everything is connected and power is reaching it. If the control board in the steering control unit is bad, the steering stops and traction control will stop too. During a recent visit to Shelby American for a Team Shelby event in September of 2023, they gave me a tip on what to have on the shelf in my garage. They said at my car's age I should have 3 things for sure standing by. Those things are an alternator, steering box, and a water pump. They said those can be problem areas and to have them handy. So guess what I did? Yep, I now have all three on the shelf, and I think it is funny in a weird way to have you tell me about your problem, which may be a steering control box issue. Do some troubleshooting on the controller for your steering and move forward accordingly. Let me know how it turns out.

I don't really understand the traction control on my 2014 Mustang. On my 2008 Mustang the traction control felt like it was just cutting power off completely to the car if there was any slippage.. The Advancetrac feels like it's not working in my car.. My car will often drift at launch if I am turning onto a street from a stop.. it literally skids and I have to control it and then it will stop. But when I hit that button it says "Advanctrac off" and "Advanctrac on" in the display.. I don't have any of those lights come on at all or come on when I press the button.

AdvancTrac has come of age. By that I mean it has its threads in each wheel's rotation speed, steering wheel angle, throttle position, braking system, and believe it or not, seat restraints. Hell, I probably missed a thing or two, and most people don't understand how much or how little it works. Suffice to say it really helps keep you safe and no matter what the state of the system is according to the display, AdvanceTrac is always on to some degree. As far as you losing grip around corners is all you brother. No traction control in the world on any vehicle can bring you back from that. I always make sure my car and steering wheel is straight before I put my foot in it. I am guessing it is working as designed. I admit I cannot be 100% because you are there and I am here. I have a 2008 that I bought used I’m restoring it and I have those icons on but my car isn’t a cobra it’s a gt…. I know the abs sensor on the front passenger side needs one I’m basically restarting after a terrible wreck but this isn’t the car I wrecked in which I survived …. That’s another story but I’m having problems with traction control isn’t turned on it’s off and I like to know how to fix it ….

I just purchased an Innova OBDl and OBDll Scan Tool with ABS and it can check and reset if necessary your Mustang's traction control system. Make sure all components are connected securely and all wiring is good. After that, the scanner can reset the system. I did some thorough testing of wheel components before I had my system reset. I don't know what going on with my 2010 mustang premium stick shift. My left e brake broke and was dragging it for couple miles and didn't know still haven't fix it and now it the check chargym system light shows up which I think it's ny alternator but I don't have issues turning on the car but those traction 2 lights come on and off my ac turns on and off my battery voltage goes up and down but doesn't go low only up and normal

First, the e-brake cable is not tied to the computer. The rest of the symptoms can show up with weak battery, battery connections, alternator problems, and pretty much any ground connection to the body or engine that has broken or become loose. I would make sure the charging system is working and the battery withstands a load test. Most auto parts stores will test both for free. Remember to check all ground connections, too. The first place I would look is the switch/button status. Is it good or not. Things fail without warning. Did the wire get disconnected? Stuff like that. I am not sure what a new switch would cost, but it is probably a cheap fix attempt to fix if you are not sure how to troubleshoot a switch. If the switch/button is good and all wiring is okay, I would have the brake system re-initialized by a reputable shop with the proper equipment. Sorry, I couldn't be more help. Let me know how it pans out. I checked a couple of forums I belong to and nothing concrete, just a bunch of nonsense.

I am sure you already know this but your steering is electronic assist and is computer controlled. Make sure the connector is clean and tight (there are two connectors if I remember correctly). If that checks out, make sure the connections at thee computer are clean and tight. If that checks out, you'll need to re-initialize the steering control system and you'll need a scanner for that. You can download Forscan for free. Search for it on the web and follow the directions. There are plenty of videos about on YT as well. Good luck.

If the lights came on after the brakes and tires (and so on) maybe a sensor lead got nicked. It's hard to say. Are there any hard codes to track down? Do you have a device to check for failure codes? Your ABS and Advancetrac systems are connected to one another with ABS being the system that is electrically connected to the computer for systems monitoring and communication. Check your connections in that area and if you have the ability to check for hard codes, that may be your next step.

Okay, I have two things for you. The first one directly focuses on the connections to the wheel sensors - make sure everything is clean and tight; make sure connectors to steering assist is clean; make sure throttle body connections are clean and tight; and them make sure all connections to braking system (up by your CAI) are clean and tight. If all that "first" stuff checks out, make sure your battery is up to snuff-good crank voltage, tight connections and clean connections. A week battery can throw some really random codes sometimes. Just sayin

I think I understand what you are saying now, thanks. In sport mode that is normal. It does say traction control off because sport mode lets you have more control , but AdvanceTrac is still on. Actually, even when it says AdvanceTrac OFF, it is not ever 100% off. Sport mode is designed to let you have just a bit more control instead of letting the computer do all the work. It even makes steering a little more responsive. So be careful.

The device used by John is a MATCO MAXIMUS 2.0, which is compatible with Ford's VCM 3 device. Bottom line is the device needs to be VCM 3 compatible and the Matco Maximus 2.0 is that and more.

This issue just started on my '14 GT500 after having a dual clutch installed. No burnouts or anything like that, and the shop can't find any issues. I'm unclear on the document mentioned toward the end of the video. Does that work along side the VCM? Or is it its own trouble shooting step?

The documentation I mentioned was used for the troubleshooting I did before resetting the system using a VCM device. If you have access to or know someone with a device get them to reset the system. I know you can download FORScan from forscan.org I believe and that does the trick or if you have an HP Tuner there is a VCM suite you can download to use with HP Scanners. Good luck.

Check all connections for the system making sure they are all clean and tight. Remove both battery connections (remove the negative first) and momentarily touch the two cables together (while keeping them away from the battery terminals). That can make the computer re-initialize the systems once you connect the battery again (positive first) and start the car. It that doesn't work, you may have to have a trusted show restart the traction control system.

Advancetrac (traction control) is integrated into the fabric of your car's system and cannot be removed. You can remove components that would display the icons continuously or turn traction control off, but not remove it and keep the lights off. Unless someone out there knows something I don't, you are stuck with it.

I've got a 17 mustang, very frequently the car brakes down completely when I am cruising at low speeds the error esc service comes and the car shuts off the power. Would turning off advance track completely solve this issue?

So basically often times normally when I am slowing down to the traffic stop at slowish speeds suddenly the error message ESC service (which I believe is advancetrac in Australia) and sometimes hill stop malfunction comes on then the car shuts off power and I find myself come to a full stop on the road. The car electrics will still be on so I would need to open the door and lock the car so the car goes comeplely off again then I start her up and it is fine till it happens again

​@@venomsixxx I know this is an old post, but that's limp mode you're describing. My 2018 GT did it to me once for no reason. The only thing you can do is shut the car off for 5 minutes and when you turn it on it should reset and be ok. If not, then there is an issue.

My 2014 Mustang will be normal for half the day and then the other half of the day it’ll have 3 lights on abs and no traction…it does constant beeping after it happens and what’s weird is that it causes my left break to start failing on me…I changed out the brake and cleaned the sensor…and still won’t go away it’s doing the same thing brake failure it makes this horrible noise when the light turns on

When I changed out the brake it was damaged and this new break is getting damaged as we speak…no I did not place it wrong because I went to 3 different mechanics and they said they were good

Recently, I ran into an app call FORSCAN. You can download it, obtain a license for it (it's cheap), and buy a connector to connect the OBDII port to you computer. FORSCAN has the ability to read your system and reset many, if not all systems on your Mustang. I am just beginning to play with it so I cannot provide a lot of expertise but the good thing is there are a lot of Forscan users putting out some great content on KZbin. The ability to reset your ABS/Advanctrac just may be what you need. Long winded...I know. Good luck.

I have a 2012 5.0 mustang and this just started happening to me a few weeks ago. But since it’s my everyday car for work I have to drive it even with the problems. When driving my car it’ll show the 2 traction control lights on the dash as well as the “service advanced trac” on the indicator gauge and when that comes on my power steering goes out… when the “service advanced trac” goes off my power steering comes back on. Sometimes this will happen for most of my drive (which is unsafe) to work or home and sometimes it’ll only happen for a few seconds. I have never done a burnout in my car but I have done a few launches when it was wet and got the tires loose but even then I was able to turn advance trac off…. Has anyone else had problems with the power steering going out when the lights come on as well?? I mean power steering is kinda a big deal lol

It sounds more like a network issue -- CAN (controller area network) -- on the car. Maybe a harness issue, connection issue, broken connector somewhere, or damaged wiring. There is a $400 wiring harness that connects the fuse panel, engine sensors, battery cable, transmission sensors, O2 sensors, power steering controller, and brake system that can cause the issue you described above. Inspect very carefully that entire harness and its connectors.

I'm having this issue now with my 2018 GT. It's not just the two traction control lights on, it's also the ABS light and in addition to the "service advancetrac" notification I also get a "hill start disabled" notification. Cruise control is also disabled when these other things are disabled. It just happened out of the blue while I was driving. I didn't even do a burnout. Now, I just have to find someone with that particular programmer, ugh

the ugh part is true, but it is an easy fix. If by chance you have an HP Tuner device, the software available for it I think has the ability to reset systems. Anyway, traction control is a necessary feature for cruise control to work because of the signals used to control your vehicle when using cruise control. It has to have control over all four corners of your vehicle. Good luck and thanks for taking the time to comment.

@@DocsBoost I do have a Bama Revtech tuner but it didn't help. I reset the code, at least I think I did, but it came right back as soon as I started the car. I admit though, I dont really know how to use it other than downloading the 93 octane custom tune I got from Bama.

Yeah, that tuner won't do the trick. HP Tuners has way more power and a wide range of software available. You'll have to find someone with the VCM-compatible scanner to do the trick. Good luck, sir.

Mine is intermittent "Service AdvancTrac" in conjunction with the "Check Fuel Fill Inlet", which points to wiring harness short due to temporary contact with exhaust. 🤞🏻

You rock bro! Just had to get that out the way. I got my first mustang a couple years ago. I got the v6 with the advance trac. Mine stops accelerating at 120 but my rpm is only at 3000 can I get more mph somehow? I knocked my advance trac smoking my tires too but confess not nearly as impressive

First, thanks for the "you rock" comment. Everyone loves to be appreciated. Second, you may have heard the rumors that limits are built into the computer for most cars right out of the box. For the most part, it is not a rumor. To get more, you will have to get another tune dropped into your car's computer. That means buying a handheld unit like SCT and whoever you buy it from usually provides a tune or two. Investigate that path and let me know how it works out.

I highly recommend finding a trustworthy shop with required equipment to check/initialize your system functions. The device can also diagnose issues it cannot resolve by re-initializing the particular function. Let me know how that works out.

Doc's Boost so just today i was driving today normally and all lights turned off slowly. First traction control then about 10 minutes later airbag light came off. So now its okay i can deactivate and activate traction control.

@@DocsBoost Mine has 102,000 miles and I've had it for 13 months and the "hill start assist" as well as "advanced trac service" both came on today on my way home (that's why I landed here). Luckily, the 3 miles I traveled didn't feel any different than normal. I joke with other Mustang owners that I got the 320 ft-lb torque version and it's a pooch compared to the 350 ft-lb version!

@@DocsBoost great video by chance do you know what cuases the cluster gauges back light to start dimming because on my 2013 mustang gt the fuel guage and temperature guage background light have turned off they turn on and flicker but now they just dont light up anymore on my speed cluster half of the side is dimmed it always flickers when im driving -_- ive disconnected the battery and nothing still does it its like when a light bulb is about to give out starts flickering and eventually turns off i dont know whats the problem thats causing it to act like that

@@DocsBoost thanks:) ive checked for burnt fuses and i didnt find anything that would cuase the lights to be flickering... i thought it was a bad ground unit but no also the guage cluster lights might not work anymore but theres some times where all of them turn on normal which its a sign that they work ill be waiting for your video if you find any information:)

Dash lights and gauges are all controlled by the Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC), and I will use IPC moving forward. For starters, without the use of a VCM3 or compatible diagnostic unit troubleshooting IPC issues are very frustrating and hard. For starters, check all the connections under dash. That means both sides of the dash including what is behind both kick panels. If everything proves secure, the IPC itself may need attention and that's a big job. There is a very comprehensive pinpoint testing process for lights, warning lights, and gauges. Everything communicates with the PCM (computer), the CAN (controller area network) and the IPC. There is no way I could ever go over the pinpoint tests. My recommendation is to look for DTC codes and if any are found look them up to find out what they mean. If nothing is working in your favor, find a reputable garage with a VCM3 or compatible tester to attach and diagnose your car. I wish I could be more helpful.

Wow. That's a new one. If you want a scanner to check and/or initialize systems please check out the Forscan website. They have free downloads for scanner software to do the full job a VCM3 scanner can do. You will have to purchase a cable to connect your laptop to the OBDII connector. That's right around $60. It's worth a look. Thanks for sharing.

I had starter problems a while back and the two traction icons flashed a couple of times but they were off and stayed off once the repair was complete. It was weird because the repair was totally unrelated to traction control.

@@lasaventurasdelnene7502 Does your power steering work? If your car is a Mustang, that code is for your power steering control module. Did you have power steering issues before? Now? Can you clear the code? If yes, does it come back? If power steering is a problem, check connections at the power steering control module for tightness & cleanliness. The scanner should be able to re-initialize the module if connections and controller are good.

Don't u just need to remove metal particles on abs sensor then clear abs code = gone lol. I removed it using a 60$ ebay abs scanner now it works perfect again lol. I can't believe u made a video without figuring that out lol.

@@DocsBoost it's a 60$ innova scanner from ebay 5years ago that can read and delete abs code. Apparently a friend of mine borrowed and lost it. I had the traction control light for 2 years trying all the stuff u mentioned. I just gave abs a shot and it worked. traction control started working again. Light never came back and it was 5 years ago. I did went shop to shop too and they couldn't figure it out. I avoided ford dealership coz I'm sure they'll tell me "oh this is broken for 1000$" lol. Btw I'm not trying to be a smart ass here or a hater. Im just sure people who watched u are trying to save money that's why they on utube searching. 60$ fixed mine. But of course at your own risk i just know how i removed that pest on my 2012 mustang

I would guess the largest percentage of the issues out there would end up with resetting the system, but I had the issue pop up on my '07 GT and found the right front wheel sensor broke loose from the mount on the spindle. I replaced the sensor and all good. It pays to at least visually inspect system components. Thanks for the post.
