THIS is the tutorial I needed! A year ago I got back to cycling after 15 years. Bought a brand new Raleigh and thought all I had to do was pedal and stay upright. However I kept jamming the gears, especially whilst cyclung uphill. I'm embarrassed to say I would call the dealer, berate him, and have him "look at the bike again". Finally my son explained why the gears jammed: i was onky adjusting the right, i.e. rear gears(!) - never touching the left. My skill improved, but I still couldn't understand the "uphill" gear change. Until I found your tutorial. Im going to try it out right now! Thank yoy soooo much!😊

Great video and easy to understand. Just got back into cycling after decades away. The only thing I find hard to understand is there a term called cross chaining in that each front gear can only use a certain part of rear cassette to avoid over tension of chain.
@cyclemaintenanceacademy Жыл бұрын
Hi, thanks for the comment. It's an interesting topic and there's a lot of conflicting information on the web. So, cross chaining is a term used to describe the situation when a bicycle chain is positioned at an extreme angle, either in the largest chainring and largest cog or smallest chainring and smallest cog. This causes the chain to run diagonally across the cassette and derailleur pulleys, which can result in increased friction, noise, and accelerated wear on the chain and drivetrain components. To avoid cross chaining try these tips: - shift gears correctly: Pay attention to your gear selection when riding. When shifting gears, try to avoid using the largest chainring with the largest cog or the smallest chainring with the smallest cog. Instead, try to use a gear combination that allows the chain to run straighter and more parallel to the cassette and derailleur pulleys. - Anticipate terrain changes: As you approach hills or other changes in terrain, shift to a gear combination that allows you to maintain a steady cadence without cross chaining. This may require shifting to a smaller chainring and a larger cog or vice versa. I hope this helps. Would you like us to make a video about cross chaining?

So I haven’t fully figured it out yet because I’ve only been riding the thing for two days but I’m sort of understanding the back right-handed gears a bit and when to change it but I don’t get the the front left-handed gears they feel pretty much the same if it’s in 1 or 2 so I’m not sure which number I should be in for roughly flat ground or up and down ground.
@cyclemaintenanceacademy24 күн бұрын
Great question! The rear (right-hand) gears are for fine-tuning your speed and effort, while the front (left-hand) gears make bigger changes to how your bike feels. On flat ground, you’ll usually want to keep the front gear in the middle (2) for a good balance of speed and effort. Gear 1 (front) is for steep climbs where you need an easier pedaling effort, and gear 3 (front) is for fast riding or downhill stretches. The rear gears then adjust your effort more precisely while keeping the front gear steady. Hope that helps, and happy riding! 🚴♂️😊

Nice useful video, give you a good overview. Outside of feeling your way along, it would be nice to know which gear to have to front/back in, whats the the relationship to each, for example, should you balance front/rear gears on same setting, or what conditions typically dictate front wheel selection/rear wheel gear selection. Well done.
@cyclemaintenanceacademy3 ай бұрын
Thank you for your thoughtful comment! I'm glad you found the video useful. You're right; understanding the relationship between front and rear gears can be quite helpful. Generally, it's best to avoid using the highest front gear with the highest rear gear to prevent cross-chaining, which can cause wear and tear. For climbing, lower front gears paired with higher rear gears work well, while flat terrains might benefit from the opposite setup. I appreciate your feedback, and I’ll consider making a video to cover this topic in more detail!

What does the friction dial do on the twist bicycle
@cyclemaintenanceacademy23 күн бұрын
The friction dial on a twist shifter is used to adjust the tension in the cable that controls your gears. By turning the dial, you can fine-tune how easily the shifter moves the cable, helping to ensure smooth and precise gear changes. It allows you to compensate for any slack in the cable or wear over time, ensuring the derailleur moves correctly when you shift.

Hi, thanks for your question and apologies for not getting back to you sooner. For uphill riding, using lower gears (lower numbers) is usually better because it gives you more torque, making it easier to pedal. If you have any more questions or need further clarification, feel free to ask!

Can u explain the anatomy of the gear shifter
@cyclemaintenanceacademy3 ай бұрын
Hi! I'm so sorry for not responding sooner, I truly appreciate your patience. To answer your question about the gear shifter, here's a quick breakdown of its anatomy: The gear shifter, or shift lever, is the mechanism that allows you to change gears on your bike. It consists of several key components: Shift Lever: This is the part you manually push or pull to change gears. Gear Cable: When you move the lever, the cable pulls or releases tension, adjusting the derailleur. Indexing Mechanism: Inside the shifter, there's an indexing system that ensures precise shifts between each gear. Spring Mechanism: This helps reset the lever after you shift, keeping the system smooth. In the meantime I will put your request in my to do list. Let me know if you have any more questions, and thanks again for your understanding!

What would be a good gear for not a lot of strain on the legs but good for momentum
@cyclemaintenanceacademy8 ай бұрын
Hi, and thank you for your question. I wish to offer you a straightforward answer however It it really depends on what feels right for you. Everyone's different, so what works for one person might not work for another. You'll need to try out different gear settings to see what feels comfortable and helps you keep your momentum going. It's kind of like finding the perfect pair of shoes - it's all about what feels best for you when you're out riding. I hope this helps.🙂

What I don't see explained is the "ratio" of left and right gear levers. My bike (a Raleigh) has, on the right handle 1-7 gears, and on the left, 1-3. On flat roads I usually find 5 or 6 (R) and 2 on left, comfortable. However Im not sure what ratio should be, when cycling uphill. Should BOTH sides/gears be in lowest, i.e. 1-1? And more importantly, do I change to lowest before I reach the incline or gradually change down? Sorry for all the questions.😢
@cyclemaintenanceacademy2 ай бұрын
Great questions! Let me break it down for you: Gear Ratio for Uphill Riding: You don't necessarily need to shift both the front and rear gears to their lowest (1-1) when climbing. Instead, you want a gear ratio that allows you to pedal comfortably without exhausting yourself too quickly. When you're cycling uphill, you'll typically want to shift to a lower gear on the rear (right shifter) and possibly a lower gear on the front (left shifter) if needed, depending on the steepness of the hill. How to Shift: Gradually shift down before you reach the incline. It’s important to shift early so that you don’t strain your knees or chain. If you wait too long to shift when you're already struggling on the incline, you might find it hard to pedal or even cause damage to your bike's drivetrain. On a moderate incline, you might start with something like gear 5-6 on the rear and 2 on the front. If the hill gets steeper, shift the front to 1 and the rear to 1 or 2, depending on your comfort level. This way, you're maintaining a good cadence without overexerting yourself. To summarize: Shift gradually before you hit the incline. Start with a moderately low gear and adjust as needed. Don't necessarily go all the way to 1-1, but use a combination of front and rear shifts to find a gear that allows you to climb without pushing too hard. I hope that helps! Feel free to ask more questions if needed! 😊

so with a twist shifter, is there a need for the gears in the front AND the back to always be the same? or can they be different on each side? and how does changing the front and back respectively affect cycling?
@cyclemaintenanceacademy3 ай бұрын
Hi, thank you for your question and sorry for not getting back to you sooner. the gears in the front and back don’t necessarily have to be the same. You can have different gear ratios on each side, and this setup can actually provide you with a range of options for varying terrains. Changing the front gears affects the overall gearing ratio, giving you different levels of resistance. The back gears primarily impact how easily you can pedal at different speeds. Essentially, having a combination of different gears allows you to optimise your cycling experience based on the terrain and your riding style. If you have more questions or need further clarification, feel free to ask

I just got a brand new mtb, but i have question? Since my First bike was a bmx bike i dont know which one is faster the lower the number or the higher the number?
@cyclemaintenanceacademy3 ай бұрын
Hi, apologies for not getting back to you sooner! You’ve probably got the answer now, but I hope you don’t mind me answering anyway. In general, on a mountain bike, a lower number on the front and rear gears means easier pedaling (better for climbing), while a higher number means harder pedaling but faster speeds on flat terrain. So, if you're looking for speed, you'll want to shift to the higher numbers! Enjoy your new MTB!

Hi, thanks for your comment and for your question. I'm glad you found the video helpful! As for your question, the front and back gears don’t need to be at the same number. In fact, it’s often better to use a combination that provides a comfortable and efficient pedaling cadence.

Do they have to be together, or it's ok to keep the front on 1 and the back on 5

Great question! You have the flexibility to mix and match gears based on your comfort and the terrain. Experiment with different combinations to find what feels best for you. And yes, It's totally okay to have the front on 1 and the back on 5. Good luck on finding the most comfortable combination🙂

Avoid big-big and small-small for smoothest running and least wear. There are combinations on the 2nd chainring that will be near equivalent and run much more smoothly.

So if I have gear shifters on the left and right of my handlebars and I need to be in first gear as I'm about to go uphill, do I need to put both the gear levers in first gear? Or can I use one without using the other?
@cyclemaintenanceacademy8 ай бұрын
Hi, and thank you for your question. It is good practice to operate both gear shifters to shift into easier gear for climbing. While the front gears provide a larger difference in ratio compared to the rear gears, it's not always necessary to shift the rear gears to the lowest gear. The necessity of this depends on the incline of the climb you're facing; the steeper the climb, the more advantageous it is to use lower gears. I hope this helps.🙂

Ho, i have city bike with twisted gear, max at 6, for road climbing, i should use lower gear right., 1-3? For normal road and to get more faster, is it 5/6? Which one is correct? How about when you stop at traffic light or when you park the bike? Which gear should i use. Please advice. Thanks in advice.
@cyclemaintenanceacademy3 ай бұрын
Hi thnak you for your question and I'm sorry for not replying to you sooner. Yes, for climbing hills, you should use the lower gears (1-3) to make pedaling easier. For normal road riding and going faster, using the higher gears (5/6) is correct. When you stop at traffic lights or park your bike, it’s best to shift into a lower gear, like 1 or 2. This makes it easier to start moving again. I hope this helps! Let me know if you have any more questions.

While shifting you should only pedal lightly or slowly enough not to engage the back wheel. Pushing hard on the pedals while shifting will cause wear and noises, especially on the front gears.

Confused. I just need a video about which gear to use for different applications as I’m having trouble finding the right combos as a novice. Are there any videos on that? I’m really struggling to find the advice in it’s purely a matter of opinion..
@cyclemaintenanceacademy3 ай бұрын
Hi, apologies for not getting back to you sooner! I understand how confusing gear combinations can be, especially as a novice. A general rule of thumb is to use lower gears (easier pedaling) for uphill and higher gears (harder pedaling) for flat or downhill. It can vary depending on the terrain and your fitness, but hopefully that gives you a good starting point. Thanks for your patience!

We as kids in the fifties didn't have KZbin- we're on a farm 50 miles from the nearest town. If the bike chosen for you showed up, with no idea what did what - You simply turned it upside down - and simply watch everything that moves by pedaling by hand a constant slow Speed at pedals, now shift it while watching the Speed of wheel increase or slow by what gear was chosen. Keep eyes focused on rear gears - Move the shifter all the way to number 1 and watch chain move to that gear and see that chain is now on the largest gear... Now skip all through the gears to highest number - still moving pedals - never stop pedaling by hand during this learning step. Now shifter at highest gear - Notice how much faster wheel spins, but you didn't pedal faster. This is what gear you would have selected if slightly down hill - and takes no effort to pedal. But if the road starts to go up hill, it will now be very much harder to pedal in that high gear, you'll be forced to move shifter to a smaller number and if still to much work, hit the shifter again and again till its easy to pedal. It the hill is so steep, that it's hard to walk up, that first gear is now top high, and now you'll need to use the other shifter to move the chain to the next smaller sprocket, and now the rear sprockets get used again 1_6 only much slower speed but more power - no different than heavy load for truck to make the hill, where they too have to select a lower gear slower speed but much more power - even though engine speed stays near the same speed. Just like the speed your legs move is the engine speed - your pedal speed doesnt change that much, but the bike either goes faster with little effort, or slower up hill with same leg power and pedal speed. To simplify- If your legs can no longer provide enough power to get up the hill - too high a gear, you need to quickly select a lower gear that you can now pedal easy, but will be slower speed getting to top of hill, and as soon as it's possible, with now a level road again, move shifter again through higher gears that your leg power is happy with and gaining speed easily. Keep a finger or two over Rear brake lever at all times at higher speed to keep speed in control when turn is coming up, whether it's coming to a ramped curbing to a sidewalk approaching a store front you want to stop at. Don't worry about what gear it's in while stopping at a store, as soon as packed up ready to roll, you'll be shifting what's needed to enter the street... And number one rule - Always face traffic head on with bright headlight so traffic always see you. Two famous hockey players were just killed on their bikes last week - we're run down from behind, leaving them no choice to defend them selves vs Watching traffic head on, you can see possible threats and escape further away, into shoulder or ditch, and makes you crash - That's OK, You're Still Alive. If you don't have lights on your bike, never ride it around traffic, stand in front of it with head light on,,, Does it make you take notice,, if not, Get a better light. I was appointed safety officer for the United States Airforce in 1972'. No one was allowed to operate a bicycle or motorcycle in bad condition or unsafe manner. So parents- better make darn sure kids always have a safe fun time on their bikes. You are the only one, that matters when they leave the yard. Take them out to the bike - flip it upside down and you both go through all the steps to make their brains fully understand how simple machines work. When you both are on the same page, life just became much simpler and safer. Cheers and oli those chains. If I come by and see your chain rusty... that simply says, you really don’t care. Just leave the bike lay on the ground like stepped on Coke can trash. I'm working on one of them right now.
