As an art conservation student (and an artist myself) I think the gold would have looked better if the wood was adequately prepared before hand- it doesn't seem that there is an adequate amout of gesso layers underneath for a smooth surface, the would doesn't look sanded either. Gold looks most luminous on a smooth surface , and needs proper preparation, including with a burnisher. Adequately prepared surface would give you a true mirror smooth surface. Perhaps you could try it next time.

Hi Anja, thank you for your feedback. In this video, I’m doing oil gilding, which doesn’t require the use of a burnisher. The wood was sanded before applying the gesso. This surface also has about 6-7 layers of acrylic gesso. In this case, my end goal was not to have a mirror smooth surface. I like for it to have some imperfections showing. For water gilding, you would definitely need an agate burnisher, as well as the use of traditional gesso. It’s definitely something that I’ll be experimenting with in the future.

Thank you! This is really helpful. What did you use to seal the gold leaf?
@aixaoliveras4 ай бұрын
@@alexiswallace4770 Hi! Sorry it took me a while to respond. 😅 To seal the gold leaf, I used Mixtion, which is the glue I used to apply the leaf. I’ve also heard of using shellac, but haven’t tried it yet. Hope that helps and thank you! :)

Qué aplicaste al final sobre el pan de oro? El mixtion?
@aixaoliveras4 жыл бұрын
Si! El mixtion se usa al final para sellar el oro. De esta manera puedes pintar encima del oro después.

@@aixaoliveras gracias ☺️! No sabía! Pensé que era solo para aplicar el oro.

Quick question-does the painting need to be varnished before adding the gold leaf? Or just dry to the touch? Thank you for sharing!

Hi Anna! And you're very welcome! There's no need to varnish before adding the gold leaf. In this case, the surface is prepared with acrylic gesso. I then used transparent red oxide for the underpainting. Once that's dry, you can start to do the oil gilding. If you were to do water gilding, then it's a different process. But oil gilding is a bit easier for those who are just starting out using gold leaf. :)
