Amazing video. 👍 I've personally never used non aquatics plants for aquarium but will definitely give this a try. I'm not an expert with stem plant propagation however i would share my experiences which have proven successful. 1. I use terracotta pots as its more natural and it provides dark area for the roots to grow. You could silicone the holes so it could hold water as for water propagation method. Important tip roots grow best in dark so i use pots that dont let light throught the sides. 2. When propagation of plant cuttings especially for getting rootings you should cut the leaves in half. This way more of the energy is used for rooting than sustaining the existing leaf. 3. Although the plant cuttings once healthy would promote rooting growth, I've found that to speed up method is by adding rooting hormones. I use it as per directions on the bottle. 4. If not using rooting hormones i would use a balanced NPK fertilizer. Mix separately in gallon and add few drops each time i change water. 5. Temperatures. I try to keep them in an area which has constant warm temperature as this facilitates growth. Once i see proper rooting system i would transplant into whatever growing medium you prefer. With these basic steps you could get faster rooting and plant growth. Hopefully this helps. Best of luck.

I have 6 pothos plants in my 110 gal stock tank under water & they have really grown but they should have a GOOD root system going as they don't do very well without it I separated mine from the pot they were in, & washed the roots off & put them in the black blasting sand I have in the tank, but didn't put ALL the root system in the sand just enough to hold it down, I left some of it out & they have really taken off in there.

Yeah, it makes sense that plants take off in aquarium water. Nitrogen is pretty much the building block for literally everything about a plant and they use an incredible amount of it constantly- Due to soil having less nitrogen than water does, land plants have to adapt to use and find nitrogen efficiently. So when you stick a potted plant in aquarium water, the plant goes mental due to finding so much nitrogen.

@@williamtietz4384 Try looking up the site MD Fish Tanks, he has a lot of tanks including ones with the fish you mention, and in several has various house plants growing. He simply goes to the supermarket and buys them when he's setting up a new system. They basically go wild after a short while and add immensely to the beauty of the tanks. He also has a very simple way of adding them to the water which doesn't involve pots or anything like that. As to the bamboo (actually Dracaena), you need to keep the roots in water BUT you must have the leaves ABOVE the water level. The stems can go in the water, another KZbin channel Asu has made a couple of scapes with the lucky bamboo standing in for real bamboo and they stems themselves are totally submerged into the gravel on the bottom, but the leaves MUST be above the water or they will rot and pollute the water. Hope this is of some help.

That’s an awesome idea with the small planters, I’ve been wanting to add Pothos and Lucky Bamboo to my 125gal tank for a long time and was not sure how I would do it, especially with no HOB filters and having two FX6’s running the tank and afraid the fish would eat the plants at the roots. I'm having the same issue with my tank. I've put quite a few pothos in my tank, and I'm just letting their root system trail down into the water. Unfortunately, my Oscar and severum are having a field day with pulling the plants down into their tank by pulling the roots. I'm thinking of switching to a more contained system like this one. Has it worked for you? I'm concerned the roots won't have as much room, or won't get as much of the nutrients by being in containers.

Pothos do better transitioning from water to the aquarium because the roots are already acclimated to drawing nutrients from only water as opposed to being acclimated to soil and then being stuck right into water :) it doesn’t shock the roots going from water to water :)

I bought a planted potho and I cleaned the roots throughly, does anyone know if anything in the soil could be harmful to the fish tank?
@trevormiddleton29793 жыл бұрын
I don't specifically, I know some soils can have unwanted bacterium but I've also seen people who advocate for using normal potting soil for their substrate. They did warn though about just using common dirt and specified you should go with potting soil. Don't know if this will really help but hopefully the interaction with get other commenters. Personally I think if I felt they were well cleaned I probably would but I don't want you do do anything you're uncomfortable with. They will live in tap water too if you want to "buffer" them in-between to get more soil off
