You are absolutely right. Too many accidents happen where people fall from a treestand and the most likely time to fall is on the ascent or descent so it just makes a lot fo sense. Years ago, I started climbing up a tree with a brand new climber. It was a sit and stand type climber. There was a strap seat that you sat on when you pulled your legs up and then you would lock the bottom on to the tree and stand up and move the top part up etc. I just got to my tree in the dark and the strap busted on my second sit. Fortunately I didn't get hurt but that showed me how we tend to trust our equipment way too much sometimes. I always use a lifeline.

Been huntimg from a tree since 1970, never used one. Just ordered harness and two lifeline for both ladder stands. I fell two times in my life, guess the good lord had my back.
@BooneDownSouth
@BooneDownSouth 3 жыл бұрын
Anthony - God has definitely had my back too. When I was younger I would use one of those tiny Loc-On chain on stands and I would climb a tree putting up rope cinch tree steps and then hang that Loc-On stand much less hunt from it with nothing. No climbing harness putting up the stand, nothing. Just pure stupid and dangerous. Looking back that was just nuts! I never hunt without a safety vest and a lifeline now and I always use a climbing harness when setting up new hang on stands. Glad you are getting a harness and lifeline!

Great Video! I do have a question... Could you "tie" off the bottom to the bottom of the tree or even the bottom of the stand or would that be unsafe? I was even thinking a hook into the ground primarily to keep the tension on the rope. Thanks again for a great video
@BooneDownSouth
@BooneDownSouth 2 жыл бұрын
Yes Dan. Absolutely. The place place to tie it off on a ladder stand would be the lowest rung. If you tied it off to the tree it might be too far of a stretch for your strap to reach. The hook idea would work too. It definitely makes it easier to go up when you have tension on it for sure. I do like the hook idea because you can position in the best place for you to use it. That is a good idea.

What do you do if you fall? Is there a way to get down, I've heard of guys dying from Harness Hang Syndrome if left too long. I wonder if a double knot system would work better, you could slide both knots up together when climbing up, and if you fall you could pull up slightly on the rope and move one knot down, then do the same for the next knot alternating all the way to the bottom. Or a rope grabber with a handle you keep in your pocket, then you could grab the rope with it and pull yourself up and slide the knot down little by little.

Well if you are in a ladder stand and fall, if you tether is good, you should only fall a couple feet right. So Just reach back to the ladder stand and climb back up. If you are in a climber or hang on tree stand , then it's a bit different. But again, you should not fall far, so in a hang on tree stand, you used something to get up there so just grab on to your tree steps or climbing stick or whatever and get back up. If a climber again, the fall should not be far so you should be within reach of your climber. If you fall too far, they do provide another strap, that you attach to slip your foot in so instead of the pressure being around your legs and buttocks you can stand with your foot in the loop to take the pressure off. That scenario you describe comes into play, when the tether is is too long which allows a person to fall too far or the person fell because they passed out type of thing. If you are passed there ain't nothing you can do. Just set your tether long enough to allow you stand and sit and turn and thats it. With the tether connected above you just long enough for you to do those 3 things, you are not gonna fall far. In theory ;)

Do you leave your tree strap and rope on all season? That can't be right. Wouldn't the materials break down in the weather? How did you get it up there in the first place? Do it like a climber the first time?
@BooneDownSouth
@BooneDownSouth 3 жыл бұрын
Know I do not. I just leave the strap and rope up for the season and then take it down. For a ladder stand you can hang the lifeline ahead of time if you can climb it with a climber.

When you get up there and have your weapon in your hand...you no longer have tension on it....making it useless?
@BooneDownSouth
@BooneDownSouth 5 жыл бұрын
You need to have slack on your tether line while you are up there so you can move around. If you fall, the weight of you on the tether is going to put the tension in the knot and keep you from falling farther than the length of your tether. The only way you can move the knot is to take all tension off of it. Then it will slide easily. The moment tension is put on the knot it locks in place.

WHAT ABOUT USING RESCUE 8 DESCENDING RAPPLER ON LIFE LINE, AFTER FELL IT WILL HELP FOR SAFE LANDING
@BooneDownSouth
@BooneDownSouth 6 жыл бұрын
Mohammad that would be cool, but when you are hooked up with your safety vest, your tether that attaches to the lifeline usually comes off the back neck area of the safety vest. Then it usually a couple feet. So if you fell, the attachment point would be behind you above your head. To make the Rescue 8 work you would have to attached to your belt area but then you would have the rope and everything in your way for hunting. Especially if you are bowhunting.

Just a thought. Run the lifeline down the front of the ladder so you can recover easily. If you fall with your rope by the tree you are in no man's land and its hard to get back to your ladder.
@BooneDownSouth
@BooneDownSouth 4 жыл бұрын
Jason, you could do that if you want but the lifeline needs to be attached to the tree above the stand. So if you run it through the front and fall, if you fall left or right your instant weight hit might cause the treestand to twist around the tree if it is run through the front of the stand. Just not sure. I guess that would apply while you are going up or down. Once you are up there your tether should not let you fall more than a couple feet so you should always be able to grab the platform. Hopefully you never need it ;)

@@BooneDownSouth well what I meant was attach still to the tree above you where you would normally put it just run the rope down to the front of the ladder. If you are on your way up or down you will be stranded in no man's land and it will be hard to get back to the ladder. Mine is every bit of 5-6' away from the tree mid way up. So I tie mine off on the very bottom rung of my ladder and just run the rope down the front on my stand instead of letting it hang down the tree. So the stress of the fall is still taken by the tree. May be a little stress at the bottom of the ladder. If your application was on climbimg sticks then it is perfect to let the rope run down the tree cause your sticks are on the tree. Yeah, God willing you never need it. I hunt with my 8 year old in a 2 man ladder this year. I always hunted out of a climber before so I used my harness and a rope around the tree with a prusik knot cause I only had to worry about me and in a climber you're always attached anyways. I am new to these safety ropes and I really pray that God keeps us both. This is my sons first year hunting in a tree stand with dad. So I want us attatched from the second we leave the ground. Happy hunting my man. Be safe. Fill the fridge. Make lifetime memories. Happy hunting!!!

Jason, I understand what you are saying. I tell you I do love these lifelines. When I was younger I would actually climb a tree, install tree steps and hang an old loc-on treestand without any safety line, lineman's belt or anything. Man was that dumb. The lifeline has definitely changed thing with the ability to stay connected all the way up. You will have a blast with your son this year. He may fidget and make more noise than you want him to but that is part of it. When you see the excitement on his face it will make it all worth it. My daughter got her first deer last year and I was able to get it on film. If you look at my channel I think it is called Becca's first deer - a SC hunting adventure. It was awesome because you feel just as excited as they do. Best of luck to you and stay safe!

I use a HSS lifeline every time I am in a stand. I don't like your idea of using the lifeline as a pull up rope. It should be tied at the base of your ladder. Then if you fall you can get back on your ladder. The way you have it set up if you fall you will be tangling in mid air without the opportunity to reconnect with the ladder. Pay the $ 7.00 for a pull up rope.
@BooneDownSouth

Bill that's a good point. I mostly hunt out of climbers and hang on style treestands and I do have several pull ropes. But if I forget a pull rope, this will work in a pinch. Thanks for the comment!

The flaw of this system is that it requires a hand to move the knot up and down as you ascend or descend. You should have 4 points of contact at all times if possible. This automatically takes you down to 3 for the majority of time.

Do you have a better system in mind for climbing up and down a 2 man ladder stand?
@MacD2029
@MacD2029 2 жыл бұрын
@@BooneDownSouth Yes, maintain full contact on the ascent and descent and tether to the top of the tree when you arrive there.
@BooneDownSouth
@BooneDownSouth 2 жыл бұрын
@@MacD2029 Yea but how do you do that? With the lifeline you have 4 pts of contact. 2 feet, 1 hand, 1 tether to the tree. You have to at least go to 3 pts to climb a ladder or you won't ascend or descend. Perhaps I am not understanding what you are saying, do you have an example you can share? Also the point of being tethered to the tree for the ascent and descent, is in case the ladder stand is faulty, or perhaps if you slip. Ladder stands fail every year, it is the tether to the tree that keeps you from plummeting if the ladder was to fail OR if you were to slip or lose grip on the ascent or descent.

How the hell can you have 4 contact points at all times, slither up the ladder? OSHA rule is 3 points, you know why? because we aren't born with 3 hands and 2 feet.

At some point you’re unconnected until you get the top part of the lifeline in the tree, aren’t you?
@BooneDownSouth
@BooneDownSouth 2 жыл бұрын
Yea I mean with a climber you can stay attached all the way from the ground up and down, but the first time you attach that lifeline to a tree with a ladder stand, you are not connected unless you do something else. You could climb the tree with a safety harness first and hang the lifeline, or you could hang the lifeline the same time you put the stand up. The safest thing to do would be to climb with a safety harness hang your lifeline above where the ladder is going to go, then use that when you strap your ladder on. It's kind of like when you are setting up a ladder stand for the first time. At some point you have to be at the top to ratchet it to the tree - before its secured to the tree at the top. But once that lifeline is in place, you can go up and down with out being disconnected every time you use it.
