I wouldn't recomend using this tool hooked up a an extranal 12v source, don't hook up your power leads on the tool to a external battery and use it. You will blow fuses that way. Only pull voltage from the SYSTEMS supplied 12 v.

Hello, thank you for your question. Yes, the ignition needs to be ON, because with ignition OFF, not all fuses are powered.
