I’m an APA 3 in eight ball and four in nine ball. This is the first time anyone has explained how to use English when shooting that I can understand. It’s always been so confusing to me. Now that you’ve explained that inside English is right English and outside is left, I truly believe that I can improve my game. I just wish I had found your videos sooner. You are amazing!!!!

Mate, thank you so so much from London, England!! I played a lot when I was younger and even beat the number 2 in England back then. Fast forward 20 years and I just rediscovered pool after working in Nashville for a month recently. I was always self taught and KZbin didn’t exist, so I had no idea there were systems and techniquesput the practice in the last couple of months and I just got “noticed” at a pool club in London after beating the local pros. Starting to do competitions now, so fingers crossed. The most brilliant and useful source of information has come from you, so I just wanted to say a real heartfelt thanks. The way you explain everything is truly amazing. You have a supporter and fan forever mate! I hope we get to play together one day ❤

I know this is an older video, and I'm not sure if you still check the comments or not. I would like to say I'm a beginner. I've only attempted to play 2, maybe 3 games of 8 ball, and I'm 38. Lol. I definitely understand the English explanations in the video. I recently started watching various pool/billiard videos over the last week. It was frustrating for me to even want to play because of my social anxiety, AND, there's a lot of players out there that DONT know the skills and techniques of pool. If they do know, they never explain them. I appreciate your explanations and the way you break everything down with your shot examples. Makes me want to purchase a couple of que sticks and try again. 😊

I really enjoyed your video. I’m just your run of the mill pool room A player that just isn’t quite good enough. There are a ton of us out there that just don’t have the time to get better. But man inside English is something I doubt I will ever completely get used to,I avoid it whenever possible. If I have a shot where I can either follow it out with inside or draw it out with outside that’s a no brainer to me. I don’t care how good a player is nobody feels good when they need to fire a ball in down table using inside. Makes me cringe. I’ve watched the great Filipino players so many times use inside so confidently it’s amazing.

Cut induced throw is the "gearing" or meshing of the balls when they contact. So at contact, a spinning ball or a straight cue ball will "gear" at contact with the object ball... Even with no side english, imagine a car striking another at an angle, the direction will "throw" the other car a bit in the direction of travel. Outside english allows a "roll off" action from the cue ball. So if you were a football player about to run into another player, spinning would allow the impact to be "rolled off." If you think of the gear analogy, having the gear spin allows the direction of travel to not affect the shot direction, reduces the "throwing" of the cue ball direction. The slower you hit, the more throw there is because impact time is slow and long. Harder hit means impact happens fast, not allowing much time for the balls to "gear." You can use this to your advantage by "throwing" balls on purpose, either for better leave or to make otherwise impossible shots. One way I use throw and deflection is on long almost straight shots. Since the ghost ball is such an accurate little tiny angle, instead I aim full on the object ball and either a hair of top side to throw the object ball, or a hair of top and hit harder to get deflection to change the cue ball direction that tiny bit. This is why pool is fun to me, all these variables and self experimentation. You can have fun trying to ignore all the complex stuff and just try to be a super minimalist. Or you can go nuts on all the deep aspects of the physics. It's really an art IMO and is up to you how you enjoy it.

I was actually able to make the shot and get position on the 8! Running your drills has helped me! It seems I can make the adjustments for throw to some extent now. It is not instinctive by any means; that will come eventually. This is another shot I thought was over my head.

Thanks, really good information. The problem I'm having with spin is knowing what happens, and where it will go, after the cue ball comes off a rail with English? For example, I think follow becomes draw when the cue ball comes off the rail at an angle and vice versa because the cue ball turns 90 degrees. Is that correct? Do you have a video about this?
@backyardbilliards1014 жыл бұрын
It only switches when you hit more straight on the rail. But at an angle your spin will usually say the same especially using side spin usually that only takes effect but top and bottom English.

Thoughts about aiming point when shooting inside English? I have a low-deflection McDermott i3 shaft and still tend to aim for a more full hit, depending on distance from the object ball and the speed I need. For example, on a 30 degree cut shot where the object ball is two feet from the cue, I would be aiming high-inside through the cue and almost at the center of the object ball. I don't know if that's a good explanation of what "feels right", but can you say anything about how you aim when you use inside, considering a variety of shots?

@thomasmckelvey5992 Жыл бұрын

@vbne111 ай бұрын
Brian, I find your instruction superb, which is a gross understatement. I have a question; when I put English on the ball, do I move the whole cue to to be perpendicular to my aiming point but parallel with the centerline through the cue ball-my current technique. Or did I move the back end of the cue stick to sight at my aiming point (pivot the cue stick non-parallel to the centerline through the cue ball) maintaining grip aiming hand in the center of the cue ball. Or do I move my pivot hand to the side I’m englishing (sp?) maintaining my same rear grip position on my cue stick butt? Or does one move the butt of the cue stick maintaining everything else to the center of the cue ball alignment impacting the cue ball non-parallel to the cue ball centerline. Currently I move everything over parallel to the cue ball center; so my cue never impacts at an angle to the cue ball centerline (but is off center of the cue ball). Probably all is as clear as mud. Thanks, Bob
@FXBilliards11 ай бұрын
I move everything parallel to the shot. The other techniques are called front hand and backhand English and I don’t believe in using them, particularly with low deflection cues. They are a crutch that is generally used to compensate for deflection. Every top player I know who has tried it has gone back to the parallel technique.

You do a great job explaining & demonstrating the different shots in pool. However, if I was hearing correctly, I think both before & at the 10.30-minute mark you were stating to use inside english, but actually you used "outside" english, i.e top-right on the left-hand rail shot. Love your videos.
@FXBilliards3 жыл бұрын
Top right on the left hand rail would be inside. It can be confusing because it’s running English but it is inside. Your cue is on the side closest to the object ball which is inside English. This does not mean that at times I have not called the wrong shot, but right hand with a ball on the left rail is inside. Thank you very much for watching and please subscribe
@xrpb11a Жыл бұрын
@@FXBilliards I also had trouble understanding the inside/outside description. I kinda get it now, on cut shots as you stare down the line, either the left side or the right side of the cue ball will be "closer" to you. However with your description, this implies that on straight shots, there can be no "inside" or "outside" english. After some thought I can't come up with a better description of inside/outside english. So to mitigate confusion, maybe a little visual lesson blatently showing that on angle shots, one side of the cue ball is closer to you than the other? Add a tape measure? -)

Thanks for watching MP and thanks for your comments. The reason we do not do many "go pro" or POV type videos is that these types of perspectives are VERY deceptive on youtube videos. You NEVER truly see the angle the way the way the shooter sees the shot, because the camera is either on the table, on a hat etc. You would need to see it from his dominant eye to see the true point of contact. Be careful of watching videos using that "so called" players point of view. You never actually see it. What you see is incorrect by as much as a tips diameter. Thanks again for watching. Please subscribe.
