I hate when they say withdrawal is like the flu. I'm sure anyone going through withdrawal would trade it for the flu any day. The flu doesn't last as long and you dont deal with the psychological torment. You have the feeling of restless leg syndrome, but over your entire body. You can't sleep for a week or more, which makes you feel worse. You can't eat and everything makes you wretch. Oh God, the weird chills and sweating where you don't want to move...it scares me to think about...

@@22floridacat the psychological aspect. When you just have flu you’re not also battling the cravings, the depression, the rollercoaster of mood swings. That’s what makes it harder than the flu. The actual physical symptoms are pretty much like a very bad flu but it’s the rest of it that makes it so hard. The knowledge that it will all stop and not only that but that you’ll feel amazing with the push of a plunger on a syringe. Going from the worst you’ve ever felt to the best you’ve ever felt, with the flick of a switch. That’s a powerful psychological object to overcome. The minutes seem like hours. I was plagued by a recurring mental image of the blood shooting back into the barrel of the syringe , the moment that you’ve found a vein and you’re about to feel amazing. It’s truly horrible , thank god I’m clean these days.

I feel like the misinformation of "opiod w/d not being able to kill you", is a big misunderstanding. Enough vomiting and diarrhea, without supplemental fluids, can lead to hyponatremia and into cardiac arrest. It has been documented. This misunderstanding needs to be corrected and focused on by addiction specialists.

YES! And I would like to add something to your point if I may - when they say "it's not a lethal withdrawal" or "you don't get seizures from opioid wd, only benzos and alcohol" - ITS BULLSHIT !! I have had THREE seizures in 2019 trying to come off OPIOIDS. And yes, I'm positive it was that, I was using nothing else. I also don't have epilepsy and never had seizures as a baby, so that says something. This whole "opioid wd is uncomfortable but safe" bs needs to be wiped off the fucking minds of doctors and they need to be informed it IS infact dangerous and medical attention and medication is more than necessary!

Kids need to know it gets so bad and people are in such hell because your body has no way to moderate pain so everything hurts every second of every minute of… There’s no way it’s comparable to the flu. People are most likely to OD when they are detoxing. Part of that is because the dose is now too high, but a smaller part of it is those choosing death over that hell. imagine going through weeks of hell and they STILL choose the drug or death to escape. “The Shield” has a visceral portrayal of a woman suffering from opiate withdrawal, and the insane choice she makes when she comes out the other side. Bear in mind 5000 people died from overdose 20 years ago. Now since the government started arresting doctors pain patients went to the streets for pain relief. Now 110000 people die from overdose, including my cousin 😢. 2 vietnams of people who died every year. He was celebrating opening his new business. We believe he took cocaine laced with Fentanyl to make it more addictive.

What these so-called professionals do not seem to grasp is that every single person is different and what works for one person doesn't necessarily work at all for another person. You need to give these doctors going into the field of addiction recovery a medication that makes them feel what withdrawal is really like and there is no remedy or antidote you just have to wait it out for 5 days, then maybe they would have more empathy for the patients and how hellish this can be!

Yes,I've often thought that drs who deal with opiate addicted patients ought to have as part of their schooling, a deliberate case of personal opiate addiction- and then they get to kick it. I think we'd see less opiate drs,but the ones who made it thru, wldnt be yakking about it being just like having a flu. You don't know, until you know. And, as a side note, it gets harder each time, that may be psychological- the knowing and dreading.... I've often dreamed of a detox where they put you in a controlled coma for the worst of it, say 3-5 days. Man,I sure hate how we have to learn our lessons , and then we do it again! That must be insanity.

What they don't tell you is just how drawn-out and protracted withdrawing from buprenorphine is. A VERY slow taper is essential, and sadly, a ton of doctors have no idea what they are doing. Buprenorphine can be a life saver if used correctly by a cautious medical professional.

It's not so much the physical aspect for me as it is the psychological beating. I even encountered that with kratom. I took it for so long at massive doses, and the withdrawals were absolutley evil. And I always had my stuff tested for adulterants. I learned the hard way that as an addict I cannot moderate anything. Better to skip the kratom phase if you can't regulate the intake. Just my personal opinion though. it has worked wonders for many. And at least it is safe compared to pharmaceuticals.

kratom is better to use for getting off heroin, oxy for me at least. using around .5 g of black tar a day for months and take kratom for a couple weeks the stop the kratom completely and didn't have anymore withdrawals. with suboxone the wds were way more drawn out and worse. Just can't make money off kratom in big pharma

The only thing I really agreed with tremendously is that a benzo would be prescribed during the detox for sleep. The insomnia coming off of subs was the worst for me and I stopped after I got down to 2mg

Me too! I'm currently 72 hours in with zero Subs (but I need to drink a glass of wine or a couple beers to be able to sleep) and I don't drink alcohol. It's hard as hell when you're feeling detox symptoms to make yourself exercise but it does help & it can wear your body out so that sleep comes easier. Meditation, Yoga, and a positive attitude /support system is also crucial. Drink tons of water & eat healthy (take vitamins). I hate being a slave to these drugs. I can't wait til I'm free & clear of this crap! Much love & respect!

Now I'm on day 17 and it's still challenging to get sleep but the chills, sneezing, & diarrhea has subsided greatly. (take hot showers) and try to keep somewhat busy while you're recovering at home. I remember reading an academic paper (I'm a pharmacologist and keep up with what goes on in my field) noting that opiate withdrawal is just as likely to kill a person as alcohol detox. It's a myth that it isn't fatal and jails just leave addicts there on the floor of their cell to die with no compassion. Disgusting.

i went through a treatment that used anesthesia to get off of meds. it took 3 days, no withdrawal symptoms at all. it was incredible. don’t remember the specifics though. and the dr no longer performs the procedure. ....unfortunately i ended up having to get back on opiate pain meds for 12yrs now bc of my chronic head pain, but am now in the freaked out period where i can’t decide which is worse- withdrawal+detox, or being on opiates. it’s horrible. (i also had to get off of them once before, w/out that trtmnt. so i have been through the actual detox process.) it’s just so unreal that the mere THOUGHT of going through withdrawal can stop u from choosing to get off of OPIATES! 😳🤦🏻‍♀️

I went through detox for Heroin and the opioid meds my Dr was prescribing me (ER Morphine, Percocet) and when I got home found a bit of Heroin (maybe a 1/2 gram) I had not gotten rid of, used for just 2 days and the next thing I know I'm calling my old dealer and getting back on it. I'm now in the process of tapering off all opioid drugs (Day 9), whether they be RX and prescribed to me or the Heroin and while it's not as "easy" as the medical detox I went through, I feel like this time it will stick. In 9 days I have gone from 1/4 gram doses, injected 4xs per-day to 1/16th gram doses at 2xs per-day currently and will completely stop the Heroin by day 11 or 12. BTW, I stopped all other opioids i.e. those that were prescribed to me for my chronic pain issue's. I have about 10 percocet left from my last refill and have saved them in order to wean off the heroin completely. i.e. my last step in detoxing from opioids. From experience I find that for me the withdrawal's from the percocet are far less severe than the Heroin, so it's taking a bit longer to get off of all opioids, but don't want to relapse... again and find myself back in the same position I'm currently in!! IMHO, the sedation treatment may work best for short term users, but not for long term users and those predisposed to addiction for whatever reason. @birdie yes, I’ve looked into that procedure.. it’s called advanced rapid detox. There’s still one place in the US that does it (I believe it’s in Michigan) but it’s expensive as hell. I’ve considered doing it, but it is risky and many people have died or gone into a coma from doing it. You were luck to have no issues. That’s probably why your Doc doesn’t do the procedure anymore. I’d be more likely to do it if it was in my state, but maybe it’s good thing since it’s considered a dangerous procedure. I’d just love to wake up and be done with it..

To anyone with negative comments at least hes talking about short term a detox and at least is thinking about getting the new opiates free receptors , and not just bupe or sub and naltraxone for ages , it takes 3-4 days for short term opiates to leave your system , so hes saying take longer acting subutex for short time whilst getting the 3 days out the way read below about the guy from scotland , wish we had it in the uk ........ but I dont believe naltraxone isnt free of concern - you dont need your opiate receptors blocked for too long ...... because you dont want a addiction to methadone or subutex suboxone for along time or the withdraws will be horrible with the build up of long half life opiates

It still baffles me that anyone could relate withdrawals to the flu.. my symptoms share absolutely no similarities to even the worst possible flu. For me it is leg shaking, back crawling, spinal pain, worms in your bloodstream agonizing miserable discomfort. And buprenorphine is a much much harder kick than anything. I'm 12 days away from it and I'm still shaking and unbearably sick.

@@aaronthompson4980 I'm with you Aaron, you've got this I *promise*. I used Kratom to help me off of (15 years of) suboxone as well, and I accidentally got addicted to that because you can physically becomes dependent after not very long. Eventually I had to bare down and sit through some unimaginable torment but after about a solid week of just dealing with that I started to feel results. Unfortunately I started drinking vodka to numb out some of the symptoms which actually did give me some relief but then I kept drinking daily up until about a month and a half ago. You just have to sort of experiment with things, try a DLPA supplement or some Agmatine Sulfate for the nerve pain and discomfort. Eventually it's time to let everything go and feel through the last of it, it's very hard but possible and the light at the end of the tunnel finally comes. You have my word on this, brother- keep going. Kava can also be helpful for relaxation and diminishing anxiety, but it can take time to find the brand and strain that works for you. If you can get some clonidine or trazadone to help sleep for now, and also use melatonin if you can. Best of luck to you, you're in my thoughts and you're not alone my friend!

I want to wean down more before I take the jump but my current boyfriend, I just told him after 3 years of being together that I'm on them. He is supportive but things these are like any other opioid.. he is pressuring me to get off fast. He wrote on the calendar to do one day off, one day on, one day off (today) 2 days on.. and lowered my dosage yesterday to 4mg. Idk if it's too fast to do that but what can I do naturally to help?

I've been on opioids for 10 years. I developed CRPS in both legs after a spinal injury. My biggest issue has been tolerance- and the answer is NOT the painkiller this man mentions. Blocking opioid receptors CAUSES A PERSON TO HAVE NO PAIN RELIEF. Not even the natural opioids that we produce can bind to those receptors. This may work for addicts, but for chronic pain patients with intractable pain, this is outright medical malpractice. Infuriating.

@@Tony-gv5fm Thank goodness it's something that I've never had to use, but there is no shortage of suboxone horror stories out there. In a perfect world a person could do as you described and be done with it, but this isn't a perfect world, and addiction takes more than a crash course of a week's long suboxone regimen. Of course there are some who could do it because they are sick of the life they've been living and want off once and for all. Of course doctors keep people on the drug for a long time....sometimes for years, and there are some patients that doctors have told that they may have to be on it for the rest of their lives, and these doctors never tell the patients who have been using suboxone long term that they're going to be going through h*'ll when they try and come off of it. Whatever the case I feel for these folks who are on it but are scared to come off. Like I said I've never used it personally, but a lot of people have had success getting off of it using Kratom.

@@Tony-gv5fm With all due respect, you're making the assumption that withdrawal is over in 5 days...that is not the case for most addicts. Nor is 7 days or 10 days. Withdrawal, dependent on pysiologly, age, health, DOC, frequency, underlying psychological variables, and length of use, could literally last 30 days for the acute phase and months and in worst cases years of PAWS symptoms. For those with careers, families and responsibilities, taking a time-out for an extended period of time is just not feasible.

I took gabapentin to go thorugh withdrawal. Makes it EASY, and if you combo it with kratom you actually feel good during withdrawal. I wish this info was more common it took tooons of research to find out about gabapentin for withdrawal. For post acute withdrawal, dopamine supplements help but its still shitty being tired and anxious, good luck folks

During withdrawal from what ? I took hero size doses of kratom for day 2 of methadone withdrawal and it didn't do fuck all. Later that afternoon I took upwards of 300 mgs of oxymorphone and still, nada. The only thing that gave me any relief was, you guessed it, more methadone.

This guy is dead wrong. First of all, if someone is no longer getting benefit from opioids from chronic pain, the firs thing a doctor should do is change them to a different opioid, and NOT buprenorphine. Buprenorphine does nothing for pain for most people, especially those who have been on full agonists. Additionally, buprenorphine withdrawal is just as bad or worse than withdrawal from other opioids. Take it from someone who's experienced it and not some quack who's only regurgitating information they've read. Also, another option is if the patient is on an extremely high dose, i.e. 200+ morphine equivalent dosage, try lowering the dose for a month or two slowly, then jumping the dose back up. I've done this myself with my doctor and felt way better! I came here for information on lofexidine as i'm curious as to how well it actually works in practice. Has anyone experienced it themselves?? Please reply if so.

I can tell you what really helped me. 6 grams (6000 mg) of buffered vitamin c (ascorbates) every 6 hours. Plus some potassium, magnesium and a b complex. No medications at all!. Withdrawal symptoms disssapeared in 1-2 days

I've taken opioid pills for years and had 2 knee replacement surgeries in the last 3 months that I should have had done long ago and thats partly why it's been years. A month ago they stopped working and I went through 4 days of hell followed by 20 of semi hell. Now I take 6 weak ones a day, am late aft and b4 bed. I quit drinking yrs ago and pot after HS 30 yrs ago and this is by far the hardest to quit but since it wasnt working anymore and Im 51 not 21 I knew I had to. I will scale down every week to nothing and its still painful but you have to. Hang in there ppl!

i hear ya. i too am 51. i had my left knee replaced at 38! the other knee at 41! pain and i go way back. for years i played the , "well the drs. writing the scripts for me" card. it is a long hard road. i take aspirin every day and i know thats not the greatest thing for your insides(liver, colon, kidneys, etc.) but i have pain. i would love to see of these drs. work construction for many years with titanium knees. at first the pain pills give u a lift. not worth it. id rather take the asperin and take my chances that way.

@@CatValles I was prescribed opioids for ten years. I switched over to loperamide hcl 2mg pills. At first I took a lot of them a few times a day. Then I gradually cut it down to 5 pills a day then none at all. The whole process took close to a year. One really good thing about loperamide is that you can take gravol with it to help you sleep. Anyone going through withdrawals knows not to take sleep aids, because the withdrawal symptoms intensify. I still have sleep disturbances sometimes, so I will take loperamide and gravol for those nights, but I don't have any painful withdrawals. I swear, loperamide is a miracle pill for opioid withdrawals. I'm not sure if I answered your question. If not, you can ask me again. Good luck with everything. I know you can do this. 🙂

I immediately know how much much a Doctor has about opioid use and in particular opioid (fentanyl) withdrawals when they say you are going to feel like you have the flu but after 3-5 days you should be able to return to normal life like work, exercise, whatever. You may feel a little fatigue but eating healthy that will pass very soon? 🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄 Whatever! Cold turkey fentanyl withdrawals will last for a month or long. I was shot in Afghanistan in the lower back and I've had two large kidney stones, with kidney stones being one of the most painful things we can experience. I'll take 100 more kidney stones versus going through the Fentanyl withdrawals. Kidney stones are just pain. Withdrawals are greater pain during the onset but it never subsides for a month. Not for 10 seconds. Then as you can imagine going through that you then have the mental aspects which can be grave. It's brutal. It's not the flu. @@rickilynnwolfe8357 I spoke to my pain management nurses desk (Dr was unavailable) and she told me they do not replace lost or stolen prescriptions, I happen to have an appointment with pain management in a few days, I am hoping I can get him to date the prescription to where I can feel it right away, normally I would fill the script that I lost tomorrow and when I see him Monday I would leave there with two prescriptions one to be filled a month from Monday, and the other one in August, the DEA has their nose stuck in these pain management doctors business since people really abused and some overdose on their pain meds, so the good has to suffer for the bad and I never abused my medication because I need it, I also just beat throat cancer about a month ago and I still have pain from the radiation treatments so I guess it's a double whammy, I could buy something on the street but they're like eight or 10 bucks a pill and I refuse to pay that, yes I had to go to the ER a few months ago as the pain from the cancer was very severe got a shot of Dilaudid which really helped, hopefully I can get the ER doctor to write me something for pain but again my pain specialist will see this eventually and question me it's kind of like damned if I do and damned if I don't, I've heard of kratom does it really work? SWIM had no prior addictions to drugs. SWIM had a girlfriend that went to a methadone clinic and he would slowly but surely start taking some everyday until she got plenty of take homes then SWIM took it everyday for almost 4 months and was hooked. Years later samr situation with Suboxone. Quitting methadone was the worst thing that person went through until that same person tried kicking suboxone that his girlfriend ended up giving him everday. The last time I was in rehab, the detox side, I was there 14 days and never had much if any withdrawals. Every night at bedtime they gave out meds but didn't tell you what it was. For anyone here trying to quit, just wanted to let you guys know for what its worth, I went to my doctor and was totally honest with him and he gave me 14 days worth of clonidine and gabapentine. The clonidine completely took away the restless legs which was the absolute worst part of withdrawal for me by far. And gaba helped body aches. I was also able to sleep on the clonidine.. got 22 days now still have trouble with sleep time to time now but I feel good physically and don’t have to take medication anymore.. just a thought might not help anyone and most of you prob already heard of clonidine but thought I’d mention it. And bupenephrine withdrawal is worse than typical opiates btw

Withdrawals is literally nothing like the flu, except for the diarrhea and puking. You can't fall asleep for a week yet that's all you wanna do, it feels like your skin on wrapped in a heavy hot tight plastic, your bones hurt your head feels like a hive if hornets are buzzing around in your head. Your eyeballs tear up so bad that no matter how hard you try, you can't get rid of the tears, yet your eyes sting like they are dry and sunburned, your finger tips hurt. If you do fall asleep for a few minutes you jerk awake because it feels like you're not heating and like your heart stops. You are so week that you have to take breaks walking up a single flight if stairs. After your acute withdrawals just wait, and wait, and wait to feel any kind of energy at all because you'll be extremely fatigued to the point where taking a short walk burns your calves, and thighs. Post acute withdrawals can last a life time and can pop up out if nowhere even after you feel fully human again. So to compare withdrawals to the flu is like comparing a stubbed toe to a shattered tibia and pelvis.

I'm a methadone/ heroin addict it's all sick symptoms all in one my worst is restless legs I pray and ask God let me sleep one hour a night I wouldn't wish this on no one 45 days sober keep ur head up when you tired ur tired don't force no one to rehab they know when there ready

I really need to get off methadone. I can't exercise full freedom. Can't leave my state forever can't get certain jobs and can't do certain things But I have so much hope. I'm so thankful for my mind and at the same time I wouldnt change my life choices for anything, the lessons I have learned and the quality of human I am now, opioid addiction, with the right human being, can humble you. This is exactly why every methadone clinic on the planet has case load numbers in the thousands there are 32000 ppl in my town and damn near 6000 cases now and only 35 cases who have been able to complete the program. If that doesn't tell you your information is inaccurate.

I used to get immediate relief from suboxone. Now I keep hearing about a 3 day window in between opiates and suboxone. And suboxone takes much longer to relieve my withdrawals. Was it changed over the years?

I don't know if I would be okay with taking 5mg of naltrexone on day 3 of opiate withdrawal. That's asking for trouble. Maybe 0.5mg max. After 7 days your clear to take it. Naltrexone is amazing stuff for recovery but not that early on

For those upset about comparing opiate withdrawal to the flu, it's obviously not literal. It's used to illustrate what it CAN feel similar to to those who haven't gone through or will never go through withdrawal. I've been through it and while it's nothing like a flu, I can see it being an apt comparison to someone who cannot relate.

If α2A agonists can reduce the withdrawal but not eliminate it, wouldn't it make sense to combine it with pregabalin or gabapentin, as pregabalin can eliminate even very hard withdrawals for a few days until tolerance rises to high.

Opiate withdrawal is nothing like the flu. With flu at least I can still control myself. With opiate withdrawal, my body twitches and I go into convulsions while I’m cold but sweating and my chest feel like it’s about to jump out of my mouth and that strong crave feeling makes me feel like I can chop my arm off just to trade for one opiate pill. Now does that sound like flu symptoms to you? Opiate withdraws needs support. Physically and mentally, and tell them everything’s going to be ok. You are not going to abandoned them. That’s what they want. Not someone bitching and saying “ this is the price you gotta pay” or shit like that. Ppl e who never withdrawal will never understand that addiction is not something we chose to do. No one wants to be an addict. NOONE. But it’s a mental disease which leads to physical pain.

Just want to say I had a real bad opioid / heroin addiction then moved to methadone . Was on that for 7 years now because of being that scared of withdrawals . I finally came down 3mg a week im at 6 mg now from 85 mg .. sooooo closeee! And let’s just say my personal experience with withdrawals , methadone is by far the worst , heroin I made it like 4 or 5 days with no sleep and methadone I couldn’t go more then 2 days before I said fuck it . Untill 4 months ago that is . I’m trying my best not to take anything other then smoke weed while coming off of it. It’s uncomfortable but manageable thus far when you wean yourself . The people who do it cold turkey or do it in jail cold turkey . Well let’s just say I pray for them because that’s the closest feeling to death they will prolly ever feel . Thank you

I'm going to take liquid methadone after doing H for years. Can I just take the liquid for a few days while the H works it way out? Then stop the liquid or will I have the same withdrawals as if I quit H?

No...all you will do is substitute one for the other and as soon as the methadone wears off your going to get just as sick as you would've otherwise but it will take longer for all the methadone to leave your system dragging the withdrawal on longer than it would've otherwise.

My dude, opioid withdrawal is not even in the same league as the ‘flu’. I would take a thousand flu’s any day over withdrawal.. the insomnia, nausea, psychological distress, restless leg syndrome, horrid drug related nightmares, anxiety, sweating, chills.. it goes on & on. I’ve never felt a worse pain in my life.
