Finally someone properly explained how to set up multi output with play in Logic!! I swear Ive been looking for days man, and you are like, the only person who explained it! Thank you: )

This is an essential video for Logic users. It's absolutely superb and could not have been explained any better! I used this approach using Omnisphere and could not believe how straight forward it was. Long gone are the days of using the same plug-in multiple times when I can just use one. Thank you so much!

Great explanation dude. Really helpful knowing how to set up the audio channels from within Kontakt. Would love to see a video next on articulation sets in Logic. I'm trying to work out how to have different articulations on different tracks for one instance of Kontakt and only one instrument from within Kontakt..

Thank you!!! Check out this video, although I don’t explain Kontakt in this instance you’ll get an idea on how to approach creating articulation ID in Logic! Something to get you started! kzbin.info/www/bejne/j2PHZX-nZ8-YosU I hope this helps!

Great, informative video! I've been a Logic Pro guy since version 7. I used to use the multi-timbral method and then solo each MIDI track and record it to an audio track. Horribly time consuming, and really not possible for doing real work. So after trying Cubase 9/10 for a while, I went back to Logic Pro and I just do what you do -- put an instance of whatever player I'm using in each MIDI track. So 20 Kontakt instruments = 20 instances of the player, and so on. This method you show in the video of using Multi-Output works along the same lines as Cubase in that you can assign each MIDI channel in the player instance to its own output. Great way get around the lame way Logic does multi timbral instruments. I'm going to work with this and see how I can put it to use. Great info! Thanks!

Thanks for the video. I have this down for Kontakt using multi out. I can select each aux track and mix it independently while all sounds generated from the one instance of Kontakt. However with East West Play I've tried both multi-out the way it works with kontakt, and multi timbral. Neither option is letting me mix each track independently. Like if i mute one (in multi timbral) they all are muted. Or if I change the volume of one fader, they all move. This completely negates having these instruments on their own channels. I can't get it to work like it does with Kontakt multi-out either. Any thoughts? Thanks
@Johnmunstudios4 жыл бұрын
Hey Dave! Yeah, there is a work around for that because I know Logic can make things a bit tricky and every sample library works differently. I will link below my most recent video on bouncing out multi-output. This will help bounce out your tracks properly and get your tracks mixed without having to worry about those technical issues. I'd recommend to always bounce the MIDI info to audio tracks. It is just easier to mix and will sound so much better. I hope this helps! kzbin.info/www/bejne/pqjRdpiNYtSFjac

Thanks, very great, but where are the record buttons in the LPX mixers „ auxchannels“?
@Johnmunstudios4 жыл бұрын
Wow! I completely missed to explain that little detail! So you just need to have the main channel on record but make sure your MIDI keyboard is in the correct channel. For example, if you want to record channel 5, then enable the master channel and make sure your MIDI Keyboard is on 5 it will record channel 5 not 1. Make sense?

@@Johnmunstudios Many thanks, but where i had to do this? In LPX or keyboard itself? Sorry for my bad english. I am German. Greetings from Hannover Germany.

EXCELLENT video thank you for sharing I was to EWQL regarding the same issue, its very confusing at times.wonderinf if you could help I followed all steps as described but the midi channel in the left plan of tracks doesn't change number as I add the out put tracks with + sign, any ideas is it the keyboard ??
@Johnmunstudios4 жыл бұрын
Hello! Remember if you are using multi-output technically the track is being occupied by one track. It does not have a number because EW is the only library being used in the 8 tracks. Make sense?

This was a great explanation of multi output in LPX. After using Cubase for years I decided to try Logic but found using multiout VSTs confusing. I get you explanation but I am still not understanding why the aux tracks you created in the main area do not have a record button. If you are using Kontakt and you have instruments loaded and just want to record channel 3, is selecting that track the way you record just on that track/midi channel? Why doesn’t each output/aux track have its own record button, only the main track? How do you arm an aux track for recording? Thanks for a great tut!
@Johnmunstudios3 жыл бұрын
Hello Flo, Yes, It’s a bit complicated… but I believe the reason for that is so you know that the multi-output is still being fed through one main channel. Unfortunately, there is no way around this, but if you check this video below on exporting multi-output tracks maybe you’ll better understand the way you can record MIDI using this method. When using the multi-outputs, routing is super important so that the tracks can be bounced separately and then properly mixed. kzbin.info/www/bejne/pqjRdpiNYtSFjac Hope this helps!!

I tried to leave a comment on this video sharing a tip about controlling volume/pan independently for MIDI channels, but it didn't go through (maybe there's some comment policy, or my comment was too long?). Anyway, in the video John mentions "workarounds" - some of those workarounds can actually be a pretty nice workflow especially for large orchestral templates, so it's worth looking into for some folks.

@Johnmunstudios4 жыл бұрын
Make sure that the recorded samples you are using as well are stereo. That’s odd, that shouldn’t be the case, never had that happen to me! I’ll investigate to see if I can find something on that!
@totallynotabot151 Жыл бұрын
Compared to say Garageband or FL, it looks to me like Logic's implementation of tracks is just plain wrong. For each track I can define the MIDI Out channel, the volume and the pan level. The first one is applied PER TRACK as the name implies, the other two are applied to the mixer channel (or channel strip) and not to the track. If you use 3 tracks with different instruments and want to make one of them quieter, what's the expected workflow? Select each midi region on the track and change the velocity of the notes there?

Hello, I am hoping someone can help me. The tutorial is great, but I am not able to get logic to show Opus Multi-Output (16xStereo). No matter what I do it only shows (9xStereo Output). In this video I saw John select 16xStereo)

Hi John, great video and very detailed. I have a question for you: do you know if there is a way to automate assigning output channel in Kontakt? I mean, I load multi-output 16 Kontakt and insert different instruments inside it; now I should route each instr. to the right output channel - as you do here (btw you could also use the mixer editor in Kontakt and choose "Batch Functions - Clear output sections.."). Can I avoid to do that manually? Thx. (and stay safe in this critical pandemic period :))
@Johnmunstudios4 жыл бұрын
Pyroz MS Unfortunately, I do not use it enough to know a work around for that. I use this for very special cases. Every time I need to use this its to save CPU and I do all the routing manually. Sorry I couldn’t be more of help... stay safe as well!

F*ck man, I spent hours to get to the point that I understand how to record drums the old fashioned way with multi-output, which I don't want to do, and realise this is not why I want to use this Logic at all. I just want PLAY to work on different tracks! And now you're getting into KONTAKT, which does everything in a different way?? This is f*cking cumbersome. :-)

F*ck, I'm 13 minutes into your video and realise I'm never going to use this multitimbral sh*t! The multi-output explanation better be worth it. ;-)
