Really cool to see how Meg's #7 works and that car is totally badass! Can't wait to see what it looks like with a coat of wax on it. Thank you for the history lesson Mike!

Great video and article. Thanks for both! I have an early 80's Mercedes with single stage paint and I'm getting ready to try this whole process but I do have a question for you, not necessarily about the process but how to maintain the car/paint afterwards. Okay, so let's say I follow all your steps in your article, (Mequiar's #7, machine polish with Pinnacle Advanced Swirl Remover, machine polish with Pinnacle Advanced Finishing Polish, Machine wax with Pinnacle Souveran Paste Wax) and I get it done and it looks great... My question is how do I keep the car clean and looking good afterwards? Unfortunately, I don't have a garage so my car is parked outside and after a regular car wash it usually only takes a few days for it to get dusty or to have a bird crap on it or something so, let's say a week or two AFTER I have followed your steps and the car gets a little dusty/dirty how could I clean it up? Would you just spray it with the Griot's Spray-On Car Wash and just wipe it down with a microfiber towel? Could you hose down the car and give it a proper wash or would that remove all the hard work that was previously done to the car? Thanks in advance!

What is recommended cure time after applying #7 on a regular car?
@autogeek3 жыл бұрын
Thee is no "cure" time. It's a water soluble oil. You rub it in like I show in this video and let it soak in. Then wipe off and then SEAL the paint with a great wax or sealant. -Mike Phillips
@purrly85788 күн бұрын
On the “directions” it says to not let it dry. Why would this be? And what do you recommend on a modern clear coated car? Is the “soak in”’ only for old paint? Thanks in advance for the clarification on this.

You mentioned using a waterless wash beforehand, do you have suggestions on what product to or not to use? I have a ‘68 Camaro that has been hidden in a garage for 30 years and appreciated this video to preserve the paint as much as I can
@autogeek4 жыл бұрын
Wow! That's a real treat to get to restore the paint on. When it comes to using a waterless wash to wash or wipe clean antique single stage paint - really any brand name product will do. All the damage that has occurred over the years isn't going to get any worse because you used one brand of waterless wash over a different brand of waterless wash. Make sense? I tend to use SONAX Glass Cleaner for a waterless wash as ALL it does is CLEAN. Most waterless washes leave something behind like wax protection, shine ingredients, etc. I don't NEED something left behind. All I need is CLEAN. I'm going to work on the car so anything left behind by a waterless wash is just a waste of my time. If you have any questions about restoring the paint on this Camaro - feel free to reach out to me, I would be happy to help. mike.phillips@autogeek.net -Mike Phillips

What's the best way to remove hard water spot etched into old SS METALLIC enamel? Tried MDR, light distilled vinegar/distilled water mix, no luck. #7 helps to mask it but as Mike says, the hardest to revive is old ss METALLICS :( Afraid to compound with risk of tiger stripes and burn thru. :( This is great stuff! Been doing this a while now to SS paint and periodically to original single stage enamel on my 63 AMC Rambler Ambassador (Cape Cod Blue Poly Metallic). Really brings out the color, works amazing, except the one issue I ran into above. Great video, thanks!

Great job and information as always. Would you use a wax or a paint sealant after your done with the #7?
@autogeek4 жыл бұрын
Yes. In the video I explained why you shouldn't use a paint "coating". Stick with a conventional car wax or synthetic paint sealant or a hybrid version of these types of products. Basically you can use anything that does not require you to use a PANEL WIPE to chemically strip the paint. Think about it - you just applied an OILY product. Before using a paint coating you normally use a panel wipe to REMOVE any polishing oils. Kind of working backwards and it will dull the paint. Make sense? -Mike Phillips

You could try a one step product like BLACKFIRE One Step, which is a fine cut polish with a wax in it. If you don't want to use a fine cut abrasive, you could try using a non-abrasive cleaner wax. However, if it's not enough, you will have to use a fine abrasive to clean it up carefully.
