one question. so are all tracks, whether instruments or vocals, recorded in mono? are their exceptions?

Great question! I usually record all of my tracks in mono. If I want a particular instrument to have a stereo effect. Are used two different microphones for the instrument. For example overhead mics on a drum. Then I will pan them right and left. When bouncing tracks down I always bounce them to a stereo track to preserve the right and left balance. Does that help?
