Hi Gary, Just wanted to let you know that your videos have helped planning for my first from-seed garden IMMENSELY. I literally just got on youtube with the intention to look up how to transplant tomatoes from Jiffy pellets, and here it was! Amazing stuff, thank you so much for your effort!

Thank you Gary. You always give us very good information. Excellent for new gardeners. Your onions are looking great. Mine are only 1/2 your size, started on January 25. I always look forward to your videos. You inspire a lot of people to grow gardens. Great job, well done.

My peat pellets grow white mold on the top layer every time I used cinnamon powder and it didn't prevent it , but my seedlings are growing my question is : are these pellets save to plant in the garden or should I throw them away and start over?

Thank you so much for this helpful video. This is my first year gardening and I am going to be growing tomatoes and cucumbers. When transplanting do we cut and remove the mesh around the pellet completely or just cut it slightly to allow the roots to grow when transplanting? Thank you again!

I only have the intermediate size Jiffy-7, I assume I can still start the tom seeds in these but do a step into a 90x90mm plastic pot before putting them into the garden bed. I will be using a polytunnel for my toms, can I go from under lights indoors directly to the tunnel after 8 weeks, or do I have to do a few hours a day outside first? I was worried about the cold nights. I am in NZ Zone 9b and it is now spring, although last frost date is 19 Nov, but some people put their toms outside on Labour Day which is 24 Oct.
@RoseOatley4 жыл бұрын
So once they grow leaves, I can plant them outside?
@MyFirstVegetableGarden4 жыл бұрын
To keep growing in the peat pellets? Once the germinate you can put them outside to keep growing until they are like 4 inches tall or more. That is when they would be planted in the ground. Bring them in if the nights go into the 40's. Please visit my seed and garden shop www.therustedgarden.com for all your seeds, seed starting needs, neem & peppermint oil and more. Thanks!

Hi Gary. I could only find 42 mm diameter peat pellets on burpee, and spoke with jiffy and they don't have either. Whee do you get the 45 x 95 mm peat pellets for tomatoes. Thank you!

I have a question. I am about to start growing chili peppers, and I was watching other video tutorials for how to properly germinate the seeds, and another fella said that while germinating, they must be in a warm environment, but hidden from any light until they sprout. Now I am confused because you, as well as the last 2 videos made by others say that they have to be exposed to some kind of light, as well as stay warm. I'm going to use those jiffy pellets to germinate my chili pepper seeds. Should I have them exposed to light, or stay in a warm dark room? If they need light, will they germinate properly if I have them indoors exposed to artificial light in my house, or does it have to be sunlight? Thanks much :-)
@MyFirstVegetableGarden4 жыл бұрын
No need to hide them IMO. But warmer the better. That is the key. Not exposed to light to germinate. 99% of seed germinate in darkness but when they break the surface, I am saying they need to be hit by intense light quickly so they dont become tall and leggy and spindly. It is about germinating and finding light fast. I now have an Amazon Influencer's Storefront. As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases. It is free to use and anything you buy may be eligible. Just use my... The Rusted Garden link at www.amazon.com/shop/garypilarchiktherustedgarden anytime you shop. What would you prefer, peat pallets or the coir pallets ?
@MyFirstVegetableGarden6 жыл бұрын
I like the core.
@devendrasoni8206 жыл бұрын
Thanks.. Is there any specific reason ?
@MyFirstVegetableGarden6 жыл бұрын
Not really as for the pellets, i like coir. The seem to hold up a bit better. I like peat for straight starting mix and container mix. But you really can use either with no noticable difference.

ive been using jiffy disks for some time now but as you said there has to be enough room in the pellet for them to last 6 to 8 weeks. i cant find jiffys that big....what exactly are you using ?
@MyFirstVegetableGarden7 жыл бұрын
I ordered them in bulk 1000. 50 mm x 95 mm. I made seed starting kits for my shop on-line. Search the web for peat pellets with that size.Please visit my seed shop: www.therustedgarden.com

Would it make more sense to use a 4 inch pot to start tomatoes since they grow so fast?
@MyFirstVegetableGarden5 жыл бұрын
Yeah you can use larger pots. If you arent planting a lot or have the space start with a larger pot and it saves you work.

Is it safe to use rain water for the seed pallets when I seed the pallets with tomatoes and Chili Peppers thanks,Gary...
@0x525 жыл бұрын
It is indeed safe. Actually, it's preferred by use rain water as your tap water may be chlorinated, be at a skewed pH level or contain trace minerals that are too harsh for your baby sprouts :)

Thanks for the video. Appreciate the info. Can you maybe do a video using those cheap $5 Jiffy greenhouses (with their peat pellets) you can get at Home Depot or Menards? I would love to hear your take on those and a review of their product.
@MyFirstVegetableGarden7 жыл бұрын
LOL. I dont like them. Too small. I would rather just use the plastic cells. That is why I made a kit with the bigger pellets.
@lilski883 жыл бұрын
hi gary, i am wondering, can you leave seedlings in these peat pellets for longer than 8 weeks? how much longer could they go before they have to be transplanted, and if I have to transplant, what is the next appropriate size? 1 gallon?
@MyFirstVegetableGarden3 жыл бұрын
Peat is tough as the roots grow into them and out of them. When the roots are coming out they are ready to transplant. 1 gallon is plenty. Stupid things i learned in this video vs others.... probably because its common sense, but no one talks about how to water them after they get started or dry out or frequency, makes sense to let them wick it back in and just keep a little in the bottom of the tray, but no one says it. I know this is many years old but i just started mine, i live in utah and its only been steady not freezing weather for a couple weeks. once mine need sunshine, should i just put them outdoors asap?

Hi, I have 3 tomato seedlings in a peat pellet, I'm planning to transfer them over to a larger container soon. Should I open up the peat pellet and separate the 3 plants in to different containers or just plant the whole pellet into a single container?
