To anyone that tells you "tracing is cheating" or any of that nonsense, remind them that you always use the tools to your best advantage. Sure, you can probably draw a straight line free hand, but it's better to use a ruler or a line tool. Same principle here.

@@jerrygraves6531 It's called using the tools that are available. It's like claiming that you're cheating if you aren't hunting with bow and arrows. It's equally nonsensical. XD You can disagree all you want, it's giving results.

@@jerrygraves6531 You don't make sense. If you let someone who can't draw use the 3D references, it will be just as poor as the drawing they did without the help of the tool. Just because it provides a faster method to the development doesn't necessarily make something look better. Afterall, 3D references only offer the surface level of the anatomies silhouette, if you can't translate that and follow up the surface level of the sketch with more refined detailed aspect of whatever you want to create, then you gain nothing out of it. in short: If you're bad at drawing, and it takes you hours to draw something that looks bad, using a tool that makes it quick, will just let you make something look bad quicker.

Tracing a pose or a gesture is not bad and it's alot more helpful than observing your subject far away that will make you vulnerable to draw out of proportion or missing the mark. Utilized the tools that currently available today don't demonized it.

If you use the Clip Studio models it's okay because they are meant to be used in this way. For photos, it depends on if you are allowed to use them. There are stock photos that you can use but always read the terms of use. If you credit all you use, and have permission to use it, then it's okay.

@@DeadPixelGuy low key love the ending of that sentence :D but yeah 3d assets in csp are just tools to be used if you wanted a straight consistent line you would use a ruler right? so why not use 3d assets that are meant to enchance and speed up the workflow for your work comics/animation/illustration etc (also it doesn't mean you will become a god overnight because you've used a 3d model :D)

The only drawbacks is this is slower and it sets the bar highfor the sketches you decide not to use the trace method with. It's hard for experienced artists to get perfect proportions consistently.

Tracing other art is often seen as cheating and should only be done when trying to study certain elements of that art style before doing it freehand. However tracing from real life photos is completely fine and a big time saver. Tho I would suggest also studying photos by trying to draw them yourself using the photos as reference instead of just tracing.

It depends a lot on the approech. Generally speaking, no, specially if you're tracing art already created. However, when you can analyze how something works by tracing it, you're adding new material and knowledge to your mental gallery. Notice how in 0:38 the figure Inma draws doesn't totally look like the reference, it's because she knows whats how the body works and can modify details to achieve the result she wants. When you don't know basic anatomy and trace a picture, whether is a real image or not, you're just replicating something without knowing what's behind, and that'll make the result look unprofessional. TLDR; It depends, when a professional artist "traces" a picture like Inma is doing, is just to tweak certain aspects of the sketch to make it look more natural. You are learning. When you trace a picture without this knowledge and/or approach, the result will be unprofessional and it will be easy to tell it was traced.

can some please help me. I dont know what tool shes using for the red lines(sketch). Like whats that small yellow things shes using when shes drawing. what is that? How come my brush size looks way bigger than hers too even though im using the same size she has. Are there certain settings she has on? Someone please let me know.
@izumichan31

Its just a brush on a new layer in the color red. What yellow things? Probably a brush setting. Could also be a difference in canvas size. The smaller the canvas the bigger the brush looks. The bigger the canvas the smaller the brush looks even at the same size.

IMO it's better to draw from the reference instead of tracing over it and adding your own details.

I tend to work the first sketch out in my head without reference. Then I will use a 3D model to check my work if needed. I do the same with lighting. Getting good at gesture drawing without reference is just about the most important thing any figure artist can do. I always approach it like I am drawing a single frame of animation with everything being a little bit exaggerated. This is the best advice I could give any artist. When you get confident enough to work this way that's when you really start rolling.

@@deadhouse3889 what's your process for lighting and reference? I'm a beginner
@deadhouse3889
@deadhouse3889 2 жыл бұрын
@@jerrygraves6531 Ok, this is a huge question but I'll try to make this simple. First of all, the most important reference you will ever have is the last thing you did. It is the foundation you are building your style on. Keep it close, this is not something you want to try and pull from memory. Actually look at it as you work on your new stuff. Now, as far as using photos or 3D models for reference it's not going to get you anywhere if you haven't trained yourself to retain the pose in your mind. If you can't imagine it without reference to a certain degree you will get lost in the process and end up massaging the lines for hours because you can't see the path forward. Reference is not the drawing, the actually lines on the paper are and they come from your head. References are there to assist you, not a crutch to lean on. Get good at breaking the body down into shapes and you won't be so worried about finding references for overall form and poses. References when starting out can help you get acquainted with the natural movements and limitations of the body but once you understand that they become a bit less relevant. The way I use reference at my level is I bring up the website Sketchfab on my second monitor and use their 3D viewer to rotate around models of the human body other artists have done. This is super useful in nailing down the muscles after you have finished with your gesture drawing. As for lighting, just stick to three point lighting to begin with. This is more than enough for a beginer and what most of the splash artist and comic book artists use you see online. Throw some Rembrant lighting in there if you want to do portraits. For staging lighting I use Daz Studio for my paintings but just wing it for basic illustrations most of the time. Lighting and color are the same thing and very difficult to juggle in the mind. Color theory gets pretty complicated. If you want to save yourself a lot of stress, work in greyscale and learn gradient mapping. Thats all I got for today. I could go on for hours, it's all connected and one point just leads to another. I hope some of this helps.
@izumichan31
@izumichan31 2 жыл бұрын
This very much depends on what level you are and if you're doing things commercially. Beginners should probably always also use references. However the more experienced you get just going over the models makes things quicker especially when deadlines are an issue for commissions or something like comics.

@SilvaShadow1990
@SilvaShadow1990 3 жыл бұрын
Not really. It's a gray area at best. There's nothing wrong with references. Even if you trace the outline and edit it later, it's not really cheating. Notice how the original character has pants but the traced image became a school girl
@deadhouse3889

Artist have always used references. The thing about tracing is you lose a lot of bounce. It can sit real flat. I always sketch out of my head first then use a 3D model to correct any mistakes I might have made. Short cuts are only a weakness when you don't know the full process. When you know what you are doing they are just a way to get to where you already know you are going faster.
