How To Use PS2 Guitar Hero Controllers With Clone Hero In 2023

In this video I walk you through how to use PS2 guitar hero controllers on Clone hero. The specific adapter I show is the blue adapter found on Ali express, but I'm sure other adapters work similarly. This works for both wireless and wired playstation 2 controllers. I go through mapping each button and what button it corresponds to on a regular controller.

I had my original GH: Metallica guitar and receiver for PS2 laying around and found out about Clone Hero recently, just using one of those black generic USB to PS2 adapters I plugged it into one of the front USB 3.0 slots and while CH recognized my guitar sort of, half the inputs were mixed when trying to set it up and no controls would work in menu, I read your comment about USB 2.0 below and plugged the adapter into that port at the back, now it wouldn't recognize the guitar at all in CH... I found a USB 2.0 extension cable, plugged it into that 3.0 port in the front, plugged the adapter into that, configured the controls and Voila it works now, even the whammy, cheers dude.

How you made the whammy work? Do you have link a for the adapter or name of the brand?

@@alexandre_master The whammy worked automatically the first few times then I couldn't get it to work at all, it might have something to do with the tilt mechanism during control setup, if you move your guitar at all, the little ball inside the tilt moves and the computer registers it as an input instead of whatever button you press, very annoying. As for the adapter it didn't have a name or brand it looked like a million other black cables with the ps2 input on ebay, sorry I can't help you more than that.

​​@@alexandre_master the standard PS2 controller adapters don't tend to work for guitar controllers. There are options on Etsy though that have full whammy and tilt support for $20. Blue Indigo V4 is a good one from what I've seen

Hey thanks for the video, through all my research to this point (aspiring clone hero player here) the cheap PS2 to USB adapters cause terrible latency to the point its not recommended at all, not even by Clone Hero themselves. How has that blue adapter been for you in terms of latency and such?

I have a hard time noticing much lag, if any. But could also be that I'm not that picky. Also turning on vsync for the game seemed to help. I also play on a high refresh monitor with low input lag. For the cheap price of those adapters I'd say it's worth a try at least. I can say they've been reliable

@@SharpSteelz i think for the price its worth a try but if you want something thats good i recommend pi pico it is not easy to do but if you cant do it yourself you could find a guy who can for not that high of a price but i think it isn't worth investing in a pi pico if you're not a really good player

what if you have guitar hero 3, and it doesn't need an adapter, it is wireless, and you need help connecting it. (I use a disk no an emulator incase it is different).

Windows is recognizing the same blue ps2 adapter whenever I plug it in, but there's no light that turns on nor does CloneHero (or x360ce, ds4, nor dshidmini) recognize any of my inputs with the guitar. I'm guessing I just got a bad adapter? Any insight would be appreciated.

Been messing around for a couple hours now trying to get my guitars to register. I bought the same adapter as in your video. I only just now read on AliExpress that the adapter requires a driver and that it will be emailed after acknowledging I received the shipment. No idea how long that will take but maybe mention something about the driver because your video left me thinking the adapter was plug and play. Not cool.

It is wireless, the one I'm using it with was actually the wireless adapter that came with the black Gibson les Paul, which unfortunately I got rid of a long time ago.

You have to wait for the first timer screen to be over then do it or the green then strum really fast. I am currently fighting the setup battle as well 😂

If I had a xbox 360 wireless guitar I totally would, I imagine as long as you have a wireless xbox 360 controller adapter you should be able to pair the guitar with the pc and then you probably just need to open the game and map the buttons like how I did in that part of the video

I was having this issue, my whammy bar on my guitar was messed up, so i lifted it out of the guitar so its upright and that fixed my issue

I'd say make sure you don't have any other controllers connected first. Maybe its assigning the wrong one

Are you sure the whammy bar doesn’t work because I’ve seen other videos of people using a ps2 guitar on pc and using the whammy bar. Is there a way for the whammy bar to work, just wondering because I just bought my adapter

That does actually work for some adapters, just not for the blue one in my video

You can't use the whammy bar in this adapter because it needes the analog button to be pressed once you connect the controller for the analog stick to turn on. The guitars don't have this button

If it's a wireless guitar for PS2 then you'll need to buy a wireless dongle for it too to plug into the adapter. You can find them on ebay usually

Tbh I don't notice a difference only thing is with the wireless ones if you move the guitar neck while playing it can cause you to miss notes since it disconnects for a tiny bit

I'm having trouble with my adapter. The computer recognizes that it's plugged in and it shows up in Clone Hero but won't register the guitar. I bought the one you have linked in the description. The red lights are not lighting up unless I wiggle it around and it's always for just a second. I got both of them to light up for a couple seconds but I moved it and they turned off again.

Update, I tried the adapter with an actual PS2 controller and it worked with that. The guitars I have aren't originally PS2 but instead are offbrand ones made for the PS2. The guitars work with a physical PS2 but not with this adapter.
