Ya this purge idea on other channels has an unhealthy ring to it. I’m suspicious of any hype that says you need to go through a crisis of some sort to achieve results. Our bodies need kindness. I’d love to hear Dr. Idriss debunk the purge. Like she says “ more is not more”

@@philipzw and even more conflicting from my personal experience too lol I had bad purging myself so i cant deny that it does exist and happen - and so many others who do experience it from Tretinoin (Retinoic Acid) specifically. She may be talking about Retinols or Retinol esters as a less potent retinoids, but still, Purging do happen and i would love to hear more from her about it being a myth.

I think she is implying that retinol purge is when people try to go in too hard and too fast on retinol instead of being cautious. If you are careful and start out at lower doses and start 2-3 times a week like she said, it should greatly decrease the chances of irritation which people call “purge.” Just my thoughts based off her comments and my (admittedly layman’s) knowledge of retinol.

@@shereeneidriss I am confused because the general consent between all dermatologists is that retinol is useless as there is a plethora of things that can make it useless or nearly useless. So why are there still a lot of videos like this talking about what retinol products? Even you use only the real retin-a which you need a prescription for. So why promoting useless retinol products? I really don't understand it. I will ask my dermatologists if she can prescribed me the real stuff. I hope you find a minute to chime in here one more time. Thank you for your amazing videos. You are right. Purge is a myth. First time I tried to start with tretinoin, my skin really freaked out and I stopped for a year. Terrible purge, peeling...I used it too much.( 3 times a week but no moisturizer underneath) I started again recently. Very very carefully. Now I always put moisturizer first and then pea sized amount of tret 2 times a week( started with 1 time a week for 2 months) I'm so happy! No purge, skin is tolerating well. Those tips are VERY useful for beginners. Thank you! 💖

@@redpillpharmacy6877Did you use both on your skin? You should definitely try both Tret and active like niacinamide on your skin, if you are less concerned about damaging your skin barrier. If you don't sting probably you have got your moisture barrier held strong, if you do then you might have to skip niacinamide. Lot of people actually make their skin irritable because of this over use of one strong Retinoids and another active ingredient like niacinamide. I would act with what my skin reacts to than rely upon anyone's speech.

Thank you for talking about the neck and chest! I started 0.025% tret + clindamycin combo three weeks ago, and decided to use it on my neck (over a thick moisturizer) every ten nights. Seems to be OK so far! I've had a few zits pop up in the area but they haven't been the inflamed variety.

Hi Dr Shereene. Beautiful as always! Just a question on the tips for those with sensitive skin. At first you said better to make sure the skin is dry but on the third tip you mentioned about applying retinol over a moisturiser to act as a buffer. I have a mild localised eczema and a dry skin. Bad combo I know. Lol. Which is the better way for me to have the retinol on? On a dry skin or over the moisturiser?
@angieangelopoulou1196
@angieangelopoulou1196 2 жыл бұрын
Of course over the moisturizer. When she says dry skin, that means skin which is not damp, because then the retinol can be even more irritating as it generally penetrates deeper because of the water on the surface of the skin. She doesn't mean that skin with moisturizer is not dry. So, I think you should consult you derm, but I definitely recommend using the retinol over a moisturizer and even sandwich it (moisturizer- retinol- moisturizer), especially for the beginning, to avoid harsh reactions

Hi Dr. Idriss! Any recommendations on the best way to deal with acne scarring in ethnic skin? Light skinned South Asian here. My derm recommended seeing someone with experience treating colored skin and maybe skipping lasers due to potential for hyper pigmentation, but I'm having a tough time finding someone due to living far from a major city. Even though sensitive skin is different for everyone, I thought I would share my sunscreen as I am prone to rashes: Elta MD Elements Tinted. I was using the Elta MD UV Clear Tinted but wanted all mineral and I like the elements one even more...absolutely no reaction or white cast. The Colorescience Tinted one is also great but more pinkish. If you have neutral to warm-toned skin the ELta Tinted should work well.

So for those who are confused about four different forms of vitamin A. The first one has an ester as a functional group (COO), second one has an hydroxy functional group (OH), third one has an aldehyde functional group (CHO), and the last one has a carboxylic acid functional group (COOH). These are the analogues of the same vitamin A
