I really liked the white trick, gonna try that out. It also works to glue small washers on the bottoms, then store them on big flat free magnet sheets from pizza advertisements or what not. Great video, thank you!

You're getting so much better at these videos! Title is descriptive, and you're visually showing what you're talking about. I love it!

Thanks a ton, Jim! This was a perfect pace and exactly the type of explanation I was looking for. The part where you shared how Steve Kish would prepare his miniatures was especially helpful, as I would have thought the metallic would hinder later processes so now I won't be so afraid of trying it. The last time I used metallics, it showed up on my later layers and I was given the tip (rather harshly) to not rinse my brushes in the same water pot as I do with my other paints. Sounds obvious but I didn't think of that and so I had some fabulous looking Chaos Marines covered in body glitter lol.

After seeing your interview and talking to my Dnd group we're finally introducing miniatures into our game, were still new to the game and miniatures in general but im excited and cant wait to paint them :D

"A lot of people had requesting some information about the rub and buff..." and with those ominous words, Jim Murphy's page took a kinky turn. Howdy Jim. Still enjoying your videos. Don't worry about apologizing for video quality. We understand that you are using what you've got (and if anybody doesn't, that's their problem) and that you will get better equipment as you are able.

Thanks Jim. I might try supplementing my craft paints finally. That does look like a very useful product and I like its versatility! I see you can get three tubes for under $13 (silver leaf, gold leaf and antique gold) on Amazon. That might just go on my "to buy" list. Keep up the great work!

Hi, some great helpful stuff in this video. I’m looking to use the rub n buff for some 40k machinery stuff. I was planning of basing it silver with rub n buff for a bronze effect and was wondering how well it will take paint and shade over the rub n buff
@jimmurphy15916 жыл бұрын
Dancan799 I have inked over it for decades to make colorful armor. It works pretty good

Rub N Buff looks basically the same as a metallic silver or metallic gold drybrush. What's the desired effect once this early layer is down? I would have thought that this would be more of an end-product.
@jimmurphy15916 жыл бұрын
Mike Gould it’s fast, it lays down multiple tone metal effects. No brush strokes

Maybe link to your twitter in the description [aka doobly-do]; twitter.com/Game_Methuselah I'm so glad this video came next, I was really confused about rub and buff... that said I still haven't dug out my mini's or bought new ones, and I'll need to get back into it before Dragon's arrive from Matt. I honestly didn't realise that by rub and buff you meant dry brush... I know you're mostly going over speed painting but do you ever use different silvers, or finish with a white to imitate light glare or do es the silver you use shine up just fine? Loving your videos Jim, keep it up :)
@XanothAvaeth6 жыл бұрын
also, do you undercoat, then base coat [for blue/browns], then dry brush, then continue? before I stopped painting 15+ years ago, i used to just undercoat black [with fine matt black spray paint], dry brush white to bring out the detail, then fully paint over from there. That initial drybrush for me was to simply highlight the detail that's not always easy to see without eye burning levels of lighting. Unless I'm missing the mark, you seem to plan to paint over/around the rub and buff

Great video, Jim! When using regular paints on top does the pigment of the Rub 'n Buff stay put or do you find it mixes with the acrylic? Do you do anything special to seal it in once you finish the fig? Thanks!

Getting ready to paint my second batch of minis. Still Ral Partha, but some town guards to oppose the goblin horde I painted last time. Thinking about primer. Last time I struggled to spray an even, thin coat, and I feel like I lost a lot of the fine detail. Should I definitely prime or can I go straight to the paint? Tradeoffs?

Most non lead don’t rot, so it’s ok, not paint holds better to primer
@mostlychimp57154 жыл бұрын
@@jimmurphy1591 All minis primed and ready. The pre-paint steps of trimming cleaning up the minis, washing them, cleaning up more of the casting line you missed, priming, finding more casting lines... builds more suspense than Zulu, I can't wait to get some rub n buff on these things already alright.

Great video Jim! I absolutely cannot wait to try this technique out for my paladin mini when I get the chance. It'll really bring out the Holy Avenger feel I want for him. If I want to have a feel of a holy glow coming off of him, would I paint white before the rub n buff or would you suggest a different color?

Hey Jim, was going to give a metallic dragon a shot with this. Can you paint over the top of the rub n buff without having to worry about peeling paint? Also, does the protective finish coat go on normally over this stuff?

I've never heard of rub and buff but I'm sold. You mention it doesn't really dry, is that a problem on the minis being handled? Does it rub off and does adding a varnish help keep it on?
@dustintaub6 жыл бұрын
Follow up question. They make the rub and buff in a lot of different colors. Do you stick to just the silver and gold and let the basecoat underneath provide the color variations?
@jimmurphy15916 жыл бұрын
Dustin Taub I does not rub off, it stays on the brush as I showed. I have varnished, etc they still look good after forty years
