I greatly appreciate you taking the time to make these videos Jim. Matt’s stories of your DM style peaked my interest, and I believe I run a game in your footsteps. Now, you yourself are teaching me much about painting miniatures, and are inspiring me to do so. I never had any interest in painting minis, but you make it seem charming and enticing. Thank you.

Hey Jim! Just wanted to say I am absolutely thrilled you're making videos especially about painting! I'd watch you talk anything gaming but I've been procrastinating on painting my minis for far, far too long. I've geared up for the release of Star Wars Legion in a week or so and plan to paint those minis along with your videos as you release them. Probably videoing my own progress as I learn for fun and hopefully to help pass on the inspiration. Like you were i am one of those "talentless" folks who has an eye for finished product but not much else. I'm hoping to change that and I'm super grateful for you taking the time to immortalize your wisdom here for us. So thank you again! You are doing a fantastic job so far and I can only see you getting better as you go. Can't wait for your next video or to get started experimenting with my own painting projects!

Jim Murphy I'll definitely be sure to stop back with updates! Also, being a total noob and all let me make sure I've got this - a blue base coat of paint or blue base that they stand on? And thanks for the suggestion!

That was a really sweet story about Steve. My mother had a stroke a few years back, and while she still lacks a lot of the mobility and usage of her limbs that she used to, she is happier now than she's ever been. Little blessings.

Jon-Paul Diefenbach I find as I get older, you get laser focused on what is important. Much of the reason I’m doing these videos and working to build a Game Center and museum

I used to have a lot more time to paint before kids came along. Thanks Jim for the tips to save some time. I'm a poor painter who learned how to dry brush so my paint jobs live and die by dry brushing.

Great video again, Jim. Until these videos, I would never have dreamed to build a collection of mini's for enemies to use when roleplaying. I think I just got too used to buying expensive mini's and trying to put too much effort into each and every one of them and just burned out and didn't pick up the brush again for nearly two decades. Really motivated to grab some cheap orcs/goblins/undead and try my hand at speed painting. Oddly, it's how I got into the hobby, painting undead hordes back when you could get 100 skeletons for about 10 bucks.

It's funny how you mentioned cheap paints earlier. I paint all of my minis in very budget paints that I purchase at a Michael's outlet locally (Craftsmart, to be specific). My washes and dry brushes consist of the same paint, but either straight from the container and brushed off, or watered down heavily and applied to the mini. This gives me control over different hues of the same paint. When I want a lighter shade for another highlight, I tend to add either a white or a pale yellow to it to adjust the upper tone. I may do a very last dry brush over almost the entire mini in a very pale yellow. This gives everything on the mini an "aged" look that fits for many monstrous humanoids and their worn out gear. All with cheap paints. Mind you, I work at a screen printing shop and I have to mix custom colours all of the time, so it's second nature. And I've learned to, except in the rarest of circumstances, to work with a single brush. Since all of my paints are acrylics, I also keep a hair dryer handy to dry the mini between colours. What would take hours and hours to do then gets halved. A small force of 12 Goblins took maybe three hours to do the entire lot, and they had probably three or four custom colours mixed from cheap paints. Furthermore, I also keep an array of technical pens on hand. I use these to draw tattoos or heraldry on the minis as necessary. I may even use them to add eyeballs to the eyes. I've inscribed runes on sword blades with this method, or even outlined designs on cloaks. I have one pre-paint of a Half-Orc "Paladin" that was re-done entirely, and the holy symbol for Gruumsh is now on his cloak. A quick attempt at the logo in white was refined by using these pens. And to also support something you've also said earlier: I used to have a lot of metal minis. But I'd have a heart attack every time someone dropped one. The other players didn't care as much as I did about them ,so their handling was more cavalier than I would have liked - so they got dropped a lot. Now, aside from maybe four minis, my entire collection are plastics. The acrylics bond to them better, their easier to transport, retain the paint better, and are less likely to induce a cardo-vascular even when dropped. My players can handle them however they choose, and if they break - it's just glue. I was never good at pinning or drilling metal minis - so plastics were a life saver. Keep up the great content! I look forward to more. :)

You inspired me to work on my armies. I don't usually work with metallics but I grabbed my Dark Elf army. I painted it purple and threw on the Boltgun Metal but I covered up a little too much of the purple underneath. So I grabbed a new model, did the same thing but gave it an even lazier coat of metal and gave it a wash of black. I think it may come out better at the end of the process but I'd like to wait until your next video until I move on to the next step. (Edit: I put on a wash of dark purple on the first model, it'll be interesting to see which will come out better.) Thanks for sharing your expertise, Jim!

I'm going to invest in more magnets. Changing out those minis onto your holder like that is real slick. One small thing, and it's not a big deal, but you used the term "ink" throughout the video. If a newbie goes out and buys an ink instead of a wash, they are going to dye their whole model instead of shading it.
@jimmurphy15916 жыл бұрын
Jimmy Hill I don’t know if all the terms have changed, but I have shade, wash and ink. All water based, can be used as a wash, shade or to change color tone.
@jimmyhill50796 жыл бұрын
Shades and Washes are essentially the same and can be used straight out of the bottle. Inks are are going to be really rich in pigment and will basically act like a translucent paint if you don't thin them down a ton. Vallejo, for instance will has some tones available in inks or washes.

A suggestion if I may. I believe, if you are using an iPhone, you can enable "mirror play" while recording your video, so that what the camera sees, you can look up and see on your TV or monitor. This will help with avoiding blocking the camera with your hand. If using an Android phone, there should be an app that will do the same. I meant that as constructive criticism only, and enjoyed this video as well. Thanks!

Thanks for all of the tips, you make it look really easy and I decided to try it myself for the first time. I tried some oil paints I had on hand but don't think it works so well. It was too thick and covered up the deal. I might pick up some of those delta paints to try.

Thanks for the demonstration. I've wanted to get into painting historical miniatures for a while but feel I would have no use for them once finished. How common is it among wargamers to have troops/rules from a less well known system (as opposed to 40k which one could find anywhere) that they routinely use?
@jimmurphy15916 жыл бұрын
dividedby0Xplode I play more historical miniature games, and small brand fantasy than big name. Black Powder, Bolt Action, Frostgrave, Gods& Mortals, TFT,. I belong to HMGS-PSW, and our October convention is almost all Historicals. It is growing

@jimmurphy15916 жыл бұрын
hangarflying they are all acrylics or some other water based. I thin with water. I will spray paint enamels with enamel thinner but no brush paint any more. I have painted with oils, but’s let’s not go there. A craft onto it self

What exactly is the magnet advantage apart from the paint grip? And you missed the second "fight" of your end quote! Two videos in a row already! I came here for "fight me devils, fight, for I hate peace" and not the filthy inferior "fight me devils, for I hate peace"!
@jimmurphy15916 жыл бұрын
Jan Plewa I’ll try to get it right. Magnets allow easy transport of figures in metal tool boxes that have easy access to getting the figures
@concibar42676 жыл бұрын
Jim Murphy; thank you. Aren't metal boxes quite heavy in comparison to plastic boxes with foam inlay?
@grayne866 жыл бұрын
Jan Plewa He stated previously that he doesn't like the foam inlay because the way they sit in them can rub away the paint. Especially when prying them out.
@concibar42676 жыл бұрын
Anthony ; isn't that what matt finish is for?
@grayne866 жыл бұрын
Jan Plewa Sure but over many years even matte finish will start to tarnish I imagine, especially as you dig them out with your oily fingers. Magnets allow much finer and delicate handling.
