Recently many of my beginning students have been asking me about scale superimposition...What is it and how to use it? In this lesson I'm going to answer those questions and also give you the pros and cons, some of you may not be aware of when using this concept.

For anyone on the fence - Richie's Bebop Guitar Improv Series completely transformed my guitar playing in just the first 6 months. I was playing the 'Gin and Tonic' for the first 14 years of my playing, trying repeatedly to properly learn more advanced techniques and ideas and utilise them in my playing but it would never stick - self-taught or otherwise. There are no shortcuts just expertly explained concepts and exercises which massively reward the time put in. His course has made me think of music differently and playing in all genres is more interesting and more fun now. Thanks Richie!

..hi Richie!..liked this lesson a lot, the way you linked what we all do in beginning rock mode, superimposing and not realizing it, coming full circle to it’s role in jazz improvisation..great lines on Impressions!!..I felt that energy like I was at Pooh’s Pub back in the day listening to Mike Stern or John Scofield and being spiritually lifted for that first time!..blazing man..thank you sir!..New York October 11, 2020..

Try looking what triad exists in the half diminished scale, exclude the root and third, don't play the butter notes.

I never regarded the 4 in a 7th chord as an avoid note.

Do you understand what is implied by "avoid" note in jazz theory, or are you taking the term literally?

@@RichieZellon I get there’s a clash with the 3rd, but in many dominant situations implying a sus seems to work even if the rhythm section isn’t playing one.

Like Miles Davis said don't play the obvious note in jazz.

@@rockychieng88 he said don't play the bottom notes, which was misheard as butter notes. Transformed Herbie Hancock's playing.
