Just a quick clarification- During the Dorian example, it looked like you were playing A minor pentatonic, and accenting with A Dorian notes (b3, b7). So, I’m confused as to where the B minor pent comes into play?? Amazing lessons!! Sorry, thank you!!

Thank you for the excellent lesson. I had a question about the Mixolydian example. Why was Am pentatonic played for G mixolydian since it is the 2nd degree and not the 5th degree? I am sure I missed something, but hopefully someone can clear that up for me. Thank you
@denmar3552 жыл бұрын
Because G mixolydian is the key signature of D Maj. So, Am pentatonic is based on the fifth of D.

I am really grateful for this video that not only explain but with application examples of minor pentatonic. I really surprises me that one can even get the modal sounds by applying different degree of the minor pentatonic. Truly a gem. I will keep coming back to this same video to fully digest the content. I have been looking for something like this that shows a way on how to bring up the mode in one's solo. Thank you so much for making this video!

@llwonder4 жыл бұрын
I understand the theory here. However, I'm struggling to apply this to the guitar. You show the modes with the color tones using just the one pentatonic "G chord" shape. However, in all your solos, you utilize a lot of the fretboard. Are you blending the 5 shapes but simply focusing on the special notes for each mode? I know my five pentatonic scale shapes, but I guess I haven't practiced them enough to visualize the entire fretboard like this.
@QJamTracks4 жыл бұрын
Very good question Luke. Indeed I show only one shape to visualize the color tones for the sake of clarity. When I play the examples I use more than one scale pattern and travel form one to the other. Besides that I'm not depended on shapes, because I know the neck of the guitar so well due to practicing, that I can target specific notes without the need of a scale pattern. That gives a certain amount of freedom. Still, it's best to learn the patterns first and after that you'll see that the knowledge of the neck comes by itself.

This video is absolutely GREAT. Just one little point in which I became confused: when explaining the Mixolydian mode you said rule is to play the 5th degree (eg Gm pent over C7 chord). But in the example you play, it is written Am pent over G major chord (which does not follow the rule, since the 5th degree of G major would be the D min pent). Can you please clarify? THANKS!!
@QJamTracks3 жыл бұрын
Hi Claudio. That's a mistake there indeed, although the progression you hear in G mixolydian with a Dm pentatonic scale, the title in the text is wrong...

Another great video, I was just working on this last night lol I find it helpful to think of playing mixolydian in pentatonic as b7 major relative to the root chord as it is enharmonic to the 5th minor and easier to remember as b7 is the main flavor of mixolydian and this way you can keep major with major in terms of memorizing. Thanks again!

I didn´t understand why if you said that mixolydian was minor pentatonic of the fifth degree... but then you play Am above G major... I think you made a mistake there. G mixolydian must have natural F but you don´t play one single F in your whole improvisation, so it is not Mixolydian.
@joev44834 жыл бұрын
So on the mixolydian example, why play the Am Penta over G? Isn't the 5th degree D?
@QJamTracks4 жыл бұрын
Good question Joe. I made an error in the title above the tablature. It should say Am over D major(mixolydian), because the example is in the D mixolydian mode.

I've spent the better part of the past year learning to "jazz up" my solos without using chords that aren't typically used in rock and blues music. Every learning source I've tried basically suggests adding chromatic notes to the existing scales we typically use in these genres without outlining any specific rules or techniques. So basically they're saying "just use your ear". It quickly became apparent that that method was going to take a very long time and an extreme amount of transcribing. I'm not averse to transcribing as it helps develop my ear but I don't really like memorizing other musicians licks. I much rather prefer to understand the theory behind them so I can create my own. This video is the best video I've found about superimposing scales over chords. After watching it, I was immediately able to improvise some outside licks over my favorite jam tracks. Thank you so much. God I wish I'd learned this a long time ago.

@QJamTracks Жыл бұрын
That would have the same effect only you approach it differently. You could play either Em pent. over C major or G major pentatonic over C major with the same sonic effect. The rule of the first one: Play a minor pent. scale of the 3rd degree over a major chord. Rule 2: Play a major pent. scale of the 5th degree over a major chord. Is this what you mean?
