Thankyou Erica. I am excited that I managed to get 2 big bags of seaweed at New Year in Norfolk. Its now all around my plants at the allotment in London. I also put some in a mesh bag and hung it in one of my rainwater butts so that it enriches the water. I love experimenting :)

Hello Erica, To guarantee a good harvest of seaweed on the beach, buy yourself a local tide table and wait fir the highest tides of the month, that coinciding with stormy windy weather will give you any ammount of free seaweed strewn across the beach. That stuff is especially good for spuds, love your site.

Hi Erica, great video and lots of room for thought for me as though I am landlocked and not near the sea we have plenty of local lakes with what we still call seaweed! I will check with my local extension office to find out if it works well as a source of nutrients for my gardens! If nothing else I’m sure it would be a source of nitrogen! 😊

also from Vancouver Island! Go to the beach after a big storm & it all piles up nicely! Easy to get, exercise, fresh air, I love it!!! i cover a 25’ square garden many inches thick. Great for mulch in spring summer but don’t have it too close to plants or it burns when decomposing. It adds iodine to your soil, too! Smells like the sea!!!

The sea is "salty". To a cook, salt is sodium chloride. To a chemist, salt is an ionic combination of a liquid and metalic element as found on the periodic table of elements. Sea salt is the later. Basically, it is the same as putting a water soluble broad spectrum fertilizer on your garden!

I generally only take seaweed that's been blown onto the promenade at my local beach by storms. I'm from a fishing town, Arbroath, and there is a lot of debris like rope and plastic to clean out. Your seaweed looked much cleaner by comparison

Excellent use of nature's resources. I will be trying this out as a mulch over my potatoes this year. When it comes to planting out seedlings or young plants can you plant straight into this or is it best to move it to the side, plant into the soil then bring it back towards the plant as a mulch as the plant gets established? 🤔
@ericaslittlewelshgarden
@ericaslittlewelshgarden 3 жыл бұрын
Probably best to move it to the side but I've only ever planted it when it's quite well rotted to be honest.

Hi Erica, I’m totally new to gardening & I live within access to the sea! So, hooray for this amazing video! But I wonder: if I throw them onto my new raised like you, how long do they take to decompose? So I can plant on them? Are they like kitchen scraps which are supposed to take just 6 weeks [to break down for new planting above them]? I hope so! How long?
@ericaslittlewelshgarden
@ericaslittlewelshgarden 2 жыл бұрын
Seaweed dries out really quickly and goes kinda crispy after a few weeks (if you want have dry weather. I planted potatoes in the the raised bed a few months later and they were amazing, try it and if you don't think it's rotten enough you have move the seaweed from where you're planting and keep the twat of the seaweed as a mulch around the plants.

I’ve read several articles from seaweed users and they say yes to maybe. If you use it in the summer as mulch put down 4-6 in thick it will dry up and shrink so do the same in a week. They say it works for slugs and even hornworms (some say) because they hate the sharp crunchy edges as it dries and also the salt. Just be careful to pull it back from stems a little so as not to damage them.
