HOW TO - Use Secrets in Home Assistant

In this video we are having a look at how to use Secrets in Home Assistant. You may have heard me or others talk about them in Home Assistant. Well here is a classic Janky MarkWattTech description for them!
Again to reiterate. The syntax is :
!secret yourSecret name (I accidentally put this the wrong way round in the video)
A secret has a name that is used to reference it. And the value is the information it holds (e.g. password).

i have a quick question. In samba share addon, there is a need for username and password in it's configuration file. I tried to put the password in the HA secret file and reference to it but it wont work. Can that be done if its not in the HA configuration file?

So, don't you need to put the line of code in your configuration.yaml file 'secret: ! include secrets.yaml'? (I did not see that line in your configuration.yaml file)

What I don't understand in this video is that the password that was added in the secret.yaml file is not the one that was initially in the configuration.yaml ?????

Probably a dumb question... but does the file have to be called 'secrets.yaml' , or could you make up any file name like say.. 'potato.yaml' and then use !potato.... etc?

Haha I love this. I can't say I have ever tried using potato.yaml. It does need to be called secrets.yaml but you can split up your config into sections and have different parts referenced.

@@MarkWattTech if the approach suggested by @frogeye works probably is much better to use a different name instead of "secrets.yaml". In this way will be slightly difficult for an attacker to understand where the secrets are (even if not so difficult in the end).

I would (almost) assume (since I haven't researched), that you could create a .... variables.yaml and do something like "variables! thatAPIBaseURL" ??
