OK, I was a knucklehead. I was nervous to try plaster, so since Keren was using glue from a glue gun, I decided to try Mod Podge, plain, to see if it would work. It did. It took a week to dry, but then it popped out easily from the mold, only for me to discover the liquid was too thick and didn't fill in all the details and there were several bubbles, despite me dropping the mold on a table top to get rid of the bubbles and trying to work the liquid into the details. So I decided to try plaster. The plaster set in a couple of minutes and an hour later, I popped it out and it was perfectly cast.
@KerenTamir3 жыл бұрын
LOL good job for experimenting, I've tried with things like Gels/mod podge and it wasn't a great success. they are too liquidy, more than the glue gun. Plaster does work best. My favorite is resin but its smelly. glad to hear it worked with plaster

Just last night I tried some gel medium in a mold. It is a heavy gel but it’s not called heavy gel, so it’s not as thick as the prima gel you used. But I used it along with an equal amount of a thicker modeling paste, mixed it together & put it in the mold. Great results! And it’s still flexible so if I want to use it on a curved surface I can do so. I want to try that resin you used, it looks amazing. And will try out the glue gun for sure. Thank you for sharing soma y wonderful ideas.

Just a word of caution.. hot glue can damage moulds over time. It can melt and destroy the very fine details so be careful. I would never put hot glue into my expensive moulds..

Great ideas. I like to also use several layers of wet toilet tissue, packed into the mold. It dries fairly quickly, is very lightweight, and can be painted with watercolors
@KerenTamir3 жыл бұрын
OH!!! wow I've never tried do you mix the toilet paper with glue or just plain water? that's a really cool idea
@kathyn39783 жыл бұрын
I lay individual layers in a mold, dab it with a juicy brush with water only, another layer or two, more water, and so on. Depending on the toilet paper, you may not need a lot of water and it could take several layers. I never tried it with a water/glue mix. I usually end up painting and sealing it later anyway

Does anyone have tips on using larger molds? I bought a sacred heart mold on Etsy and the measurements showed it 3 inches tall, flames and heart combined. When I got it, the heart and flames together are almost 6 inches tall. And it's about an inch deep, not 1/2 an inch, as advertised. It's bespoke, so no returns, of course. And I do want to use it, but it takes a lot to fill it and cracking is a problem with paper clay.

@KerenTamir it's a cold, hot glue gun. If that makes sense. The gun n glue sticks look the same, but the glue coming out of the gun isn't as hot as a hot glue gun. I tried it with a cold glue gun. Glue sets up too fast. Maybe if my molds were larger n not so intricate, maybe it would work. Thank you for responding.

If I wanted to use the first amazon resin to make frames that would then be turned into magnets, does the plastic it creates feel sturdy enough to be a frame? or since it is easily cut do you think it would be easily broken in daily use? -- Or what would you suggest would be the strongest material to use to make a tiny frame?
@KerenTamir6 жыл бұрын
Katelyn Stewart yes it’s super hard. And the thicker it is the sturdier it is. If the frame is very thin it might break. But that’s with everything.

Thank you so much for all the cool ideas! One question, would modeling paste also work? That's the only thing I have currently, besides the hot glue. Also, how long would something like that need to dry? I'll definitely end up trying the resin, that looks fantastic, but just thinking of trying something now. I recently found your channel, and am really enjoying it, because it's showing me many new ways that I can still be creative. I'd been a bit discouraged from painting/art for awhile, because I have CRPS, which is very painful, and it has been getting worse in my hands, making detail work difficult or impossible. I'm also terrible at drawing, but now it hurts too much to even try. So, mixed media in general has been exciting to learn about, since it seems to be less challenging in that way, while still having potential for lots of creativity! Stencils, molds, and stamps can do the drawing for me! I appreciate how often you mention which things are difficult or easy with hand pain. Thank you again!!
@KerenTamir2 жыл бұрын
I've only seen modeling paste work on very thin molds and its not the best. You could try but you might be wasting a lot of it. I would do the glue gun if you don't have anything else. you'll be happier with the results. I understand completely understand what you mean about pain I've suffered from arthritis my whole life. I made a couple of videos on the subject, they are very personal and they talk about exactly what you described above. Mixed media makes it easier for sure. sending love and healthy blessings.
