SAME! I REALLY want to upgrade my jewelery making. I'm getting BORED & for someone like me (many of you too.😊) once I'm bored I get frustrated then I'll eventually QUIT! Nothing worse than every material you own (A LOT) strewn out everywhere yet ZERO inspiration to create anything unique. I LOVE YOUR FLARE! AMAZING UNIQUENESS! I'm REALLY down with this technique and while I'll be beginning from the VERY start, I'm HIGHLY considering it. My ONLY problem was where you said "Shock the tip in a wet sponge." I'm TERRIFIED of electricity but I WILL learn & keep to the ultimate safety practices. Thank you SO much! You alone may have just saved me from QUITTING boring (to me anyway. Lol) adventure of supplementing by making my own jewelery. I'm wondering....all together....could you give a GUESS as to how much it would cost to start this technique. All things considered except your focal pieces of course. Thanks so much again! 😁❣️👏🌟

I just got a soldering kit for xmas today and am so jazzed I jumped right onto KZbin to find some tutorials and, VOILA, there you were! I asked for it specifically to use on jewelry making and I wasn't even thinking of this kind of application. I just wanted to reinforce connection rings on necklaces. My project list just grew exponentially! 🤩 I don't have a mask yet - and I don't remember using one in jr. high shop class when we learned to solder (circa 1987-1989). Wondering if that was a case of people not understanding the dangers yet or if using one is a product of what has become an overly cautious society (IMO). We rode bikes and skateboards without helmets and sat in smoky cars with the windows rolled up and most of us emerged from said childhoods without any serious harm or life altering conditions. #justsayin Anyway, thanks much for your videos!! Super helpful and inspiring. (re: Rings - go BIG or go HOME! 😜)

Hahaha! I am slightly on a paranoid side lol I WISH I wasn’t!! Hahaha I think if you have anything covering your noise would be better than nothing and if you do it in front of an opened window, you should be fine! I am so glad your project list just grew! Lol so happy you appreciate giant rings! I love some chunky jewelry! I just got myself a water sanding machine (which I am intimidated to open lol) so I will be experimenting with shaping some porcelain over a winter break. Yay!! Welcome to the club! If I’m ever not responding, it’s because KZbin does not notify you about threads on existing comments. I have been wanting to try this for some time. I metal detect and often find shards of pottery. I have a whole collection of them. I wonder if it is possible to file the pottery in to certain shapes. I'll have to watch more of your videos. This is really an exciting idea! Thank you.
@madebylamodernique
@madebylamodernique 8 ай бұрын
Hi! ♥️ To shape pottery shards I use glass cutters with some glass cutting oil. I then sand it with Dremel. But the most ideal way to do it would be using sanding machine with water. Shaping fired pottery is a very dusty process and it overheats and can crack. So sanding machine w water really helps to eliminate dust and heat. I have not invested in one yet. So I can away with glass clippers and Dremel but it’s somewhat limiting. Thank you so much for watching my videos! So happy you will do something fun with your collection! ♥️ Eugenia 🥰

Hello! Thanks for answering so quickly to my last comment. I just purchased that tip tinner and also the soldering tip cleaner with brass mesh ball cleaner with the rosin flux - like your setup. Hoping that once I re-tin and have a way to keep tips clean I will have better luck. So I think this is what I understand… first time using tip I’m good to go. While using, clean it as you go re your demonstration. If they get bad then re tin them with the tip tinner. I’ll start with high temp and see how that goes. Im not sure how I will know that it’s too hot ( ?) but I can go lower. Thanks again for your quick response. Hopefully this is the answer to my issues.

Hi Eugenia, You DID inspire me to purchase supplies for soft soldering after watching your tutorials last week. I purchased a lower priced solder iron ( probably first mistake). I got lead free silver gleam solder, Harris stay-silv flux, copper tape. Today I gave it a try, I could not get it to hold the solder. I’ve been looking again at your tutorials and a few other ones to figure out what the issues are. Did the iron tip have to be conditioned before using? I tried that when it didn’t work but I then thought it was messed up somehow because that wouldn’t work. I then wondered if it was the temperature setting. What is is supposed to be? Mine states it’s 120w adjustable temperature 392-932. It was in c and I put it at the highest which was 500. I didn’t get tip cleaner with the iron and I see that is very important. K kernowo was the brand. So I am trying to figure what I’m doing wrong. To high heat or too low? Not cleaned well? I used a different solder to tin it - was that wrong? I have been doing different types of jewelry and I have the metal smith background. I lately have been making wire wrapped jewelry which is so cool and after watching you last week, I thought oh that would be a great addition to what I’m now doing. I like the artistic freedom this soft solder brings. I’m 69 and very tenacious so I will not give in, I will figure it out. If it’s the solder iron that you use that’s the answer then tell me and I’ll get it. I just wanted to see if I could do it without going all in at first, so any insight you can give me is much appreciated, Thanks !
@madebylamodernique
@madebylamodernique Ай бұрын
Hi!! I am sorry you are having troubles! I think if you can get a tip tinner like this one amzn.to/3x4lGUX you should be able to pick up solder. The reason you cant is because of the tip. So every time you are done soldering you would need to condition it with that same solder you are. using when soldering. So that coat of metal prevents the tip from oxidation. But when an iron is brand new and its your first time soldering, you dont need to "pre-condition" with metal/solder but right after the first use - turn it off and quickly coat the iron tip and let it solidify and coat the tip. And keep it that way until your next use. The reason why I dont use the tip tinner (the link I sent) is because my soldering iron comes w the station that has it. So if you got a different soldering iron - it might not have that tip tinner. So getting that and coating the tip while you are soldering would solve it. Re the temperature, I suggest set it the highest for now. You will then be able to see what temp works best as you solder more. I hope this helps! If you still have issues - getting the iron and flux I suggested would be ideal. I am here if you need any help :))) If I dont respond to a thread please start a brand new comment and I will see it right away. Hugs!!! Eugenia❤️❤️❤️❤️

So sorry you are having trouble finding! ❤️ Re tumbler, to be honest, I would avoid it because we are really relying on copper tape a lot and if it will get wet for prolonged periods of time it might get loose. If you want to polish, you can use very find sand paper like 2400 and then go over with Wright's Silver Cleaner and Polish Cream to bring some shine back. You are so awesome! I can feel the energy thru your comment! Nice to meet you! Let me know if you need anything. Great tutorial! How do you avoid sharp pointy edges in the solder?
@madebylamodernique
@madebylamodernique 3 ай бұрын
Thank you!! So, they are tricky and I do struggle with them sometimes. I usually remelt the sharp point. You can also file it with a very fine 1200 and up sandpaper. If you only file a point - you wont dull the whole piece. It wont be noticeable. You can also polish it with steal wool and silver cream afterwards. I hope it helps. They are challenging to avoid at times

Hello love your video. At 24:26 in the video you mention attaching the ring base to the stone with resin. How would you do that?
@madebylamodernique
@madebylamodernique 2 ай бұрын
Hi! Thank you so much! All you would need to do is buy two parts resin (get the smallest qty since you wont be needing a lot). Mix part A and Part B in 1:1 ratio for 5 min. You need a drop of part A and a drop of part B. You will then carefully apply a tiny amount of to porcelain/ crystal facing down and will secure a ring on top. Make sure they are secured in the positing you want them to be glued. Dont put too much as resin can ooze out. You can also use E6000 and a glue gun to temporarily set the ring along w resin. Then let resin cure for 24hrs and remove glue gun (if you used it to set a ring). And you ring will be securely attached as resin has the strongest bond. I hope this helps! :).🥰

Hi! The best solder to use is this one amzn.to/3YW0Tgl but you won’t have a copper color as it’s silver. You can use a tint and add that onto the pieces but it might rub off. So generally all soldering with soldering iron are done with silver (color) soldering wire. And it’s difficult to make it copper or gold. But I wish there was a way. I am trying to figure it out too still ♥️

Oh! Sorry that you are having troubles! Have you tried conditioning tips with solder after Soldering? The reason why soldering tip is not picking up solder is because it’s oxidized. In my videos I show how to condition tips every time you are done soldering it’s very important to prevent oxidation ♥️ also, this Soldering Iron comes with replacement tips. So if you accidentally damaged the tip you’ve used, simply replace it and make sure to condition it moving forward. 🙏🏻🥰 I hope this helps. ♥️

Awww! That's so awesome! From Argentina!!! How cool!! Thank you so much for watching my videos and finding them helpful! Regarding soldering tip, I would get the one that is comparable with your soldering iron. I use variety of tips, for detailed work (like adding beads) I use a 17 mm long pointy tip. They all tend to be 17 mm long. But sometimes you would need a chisel tip. So I would get a medium thin one and it should be good if you are just starting out. Main thing is to get a soldering iron that has replacement tips. So in case you burn thru them - you can replace them. I hope this help! :))) Hugs from LA!❤️🥰

I also use sterling silver ring bases and I use silver jump rings. So just make to use other supplies and parts of the jewelry that you would be attaching your soldered pieces to would not tarnish. And you will be fine:) Please let me know have further questions and if you have any video suggestions on soldering and I will make a video :) Eugenia ♥️

If it wont, adding a strip of copper tape and then completely covering w solder might be a solution.❤️

Limestone is commonly used for this purpose in smelting iron ores. Other materials used as fluxes are silica, dolomite, lime, borax, and fluorite.

Do you mean what temperature. of the soldering iron? It does :) If you want to cover surfaces fast and have it be smooth - you d need to solder around 800 f and if you want texture than around 650. Hi! My soldering iron tip has completely oxidised and I did not know to condition as I was using it. It was a cheap kit off amazon and I am wondering if you have any advise on how to remove the oxidisation and continue soldering. I did try to remove the solder and work In a Lower temperature which did prevent oxidisation form quicker but as a result it did not pick up solder or melt it successfully. When I tried a higher temperature it completely oxidised within seconds. :(
@madebylamodernique
@madebylamodernique 11 ай бұрын
Hi Cleo! Yes, so at this point tips are oxidized there’s nothing you can do except for throwing them away and replacing them with brand new ones. I believe almost every soldering iron has replacement tips, so if you, Google your model, you will be able to find tips suitable for your iron or you can find it on Amazon. And the temperature doesn’t really matter work with whatever works for you depending on the technique and material you’re working with . Temperature does not affect soldering iron tips. So yeah, for future just condition your tips once you are done soldering by turning off your soldering iron to cool off completely and bringing the tip to soldering wire. It’s good to have your iron in a cooling state to be more covered as if it’s too hot solder will drip off. So the way I am doing it. I’m waiting for my soldering iron to call off for about a minute by turning it off and then I apply sold her to the tip and they put it away. This would prevent tips from oxidation in rushing and you’ll be able to use the same tip over and over without any issues ♥️ I hope this helps! ♥️

Hello! I tried soft soldering for the first time today and for some reason the lead free solder wire that I bought didn't melt at all :( the tips were brand new, i tried using a bigger tip, heating the iron up to 400°C, coating the wire with flux paste, cleaning the tip multiple times, but nothing worked. Do you have any advice? I'm desperate 😭

Hi Caroline! Thank you for watching my videos ♥️ So! Try to rub the tip of the soldering iron onto a soldering wire back and forth multiple times as if you are scratching it. If that make sense. This friction should help melting a wire. Also, if that doesn’t work, try to cut the tip of the soldering wire off with pliers to expose a brand new part of metal to soldering iron tip. The reason it’s not melting is because of the film that forms on the surface of soldering wire. So you would need to break it. Usually this happens because the tip of the soldering iron is oxidized but you mentioned it’s brand new. Please let me know how it goes. If I am not responding just start a new comment so I will get notified. KZbin does not show threads ( responses to an existing comment) and I might miss it. But I really want to help so just start a new thread. They need to implement direct messages here lol ♥️

Hi:) it’s from Amazon and I am really happy with it. I have a link in the video description to it. It’s not an affiliate link -my channel is too small to qualify. So o don’t get any commission but I truly love that iron. Highly recommend

So "conditioning" the tip just mean leaving solder on the tip?
