Setting up your first soldering station doesn't have to be difficult! Today I will show you my set up and what soldering tools I use. I've been using most of these tools from the very beginning. As usual, a fabulous video. You remind me that just using the best basics is all we need. Also, something I just tried and find that it works VERY well: instead of chemical pickle, I have been using just plain white (cheap) vinegar with plain salt. Metal comes out super clean and no hazmat!! I'm using 3 cups vinegar with 3 tablespoons of salt. Works great!! Thanks for great video!

Such a nice video, thank you! I thought that I’d share with you, that you can save a lot of money by making your own “firescoff”. I came across several jewelers that make their own by mixing Boric Acid (needs to be fine powder) with denatured alcohol, mixed in a glass jar with a lid. I just ordered and received a 5lb bag from Amazon. Apparently it is just as good, so I’m going to give it a try.

Hey! I’m a jeweller as well. I work in the basement of my parents home and I used a small handheld torch like that too. I recently upgraded to an EZ orcha torch that only uses a small recyclable camping propane tank and the oxygen around you. You take it apart when you’re done using it for the day. I feel safer with this torch than a little smith torch because you don’t need to worry about gas pressure of the tanks and different gas lines and all of that. There are videos on KZbin about it. It’s a really great torch.

Hiya, the 'Go Gas' torch that Kim rates is the same. In fact all torches that don't use a seperate oxygen tank use the oxygen around you. Taking it apart every day after use? Does that not put extra strain on the connections & seals? Using a oxygen seperator is better than tanks & cheaper... Stay safe...Steve...

I too have a very small space for my studio and use the butane torch. I have found for bigger pieces it helps to have 2 torches. Works just as good for me as having the big oxy/gas torches. 😁 Thanks Basia!! 💙

Hi great video, I use a solution of borax and isopropyl alcohol to prevent fire scale. You just dip your piece and burn off the alcohol then flux as usual. Way cheaper than firescoff! Lasts a long time too.

Actually I'm perfectly happy with my Dremel as a beginner torch, I still use it! 😁 I don't have experience with other torches yet, so I wouldn't be able to compare, sorry! I will start using Smith's Little Torch soon, and will make an updated video about torch then :)

This channel is about the wonderful art & jewellery Basia makes, it's about learning about how to use the tools you need & about learning to chill while you do! Do you need a GRS soldering set up? No but it might be nice to have the best? You can have all of the best equipment, but without the skill to use it all what is the point? I watched a video once about a guy who had every 'Snap On' tool made, they looked wonderful in their Snap On tool boxes, But they were never used, he just collected them all & made a video every time he got a new tool, to just look at!!! Basia teaches us how not just what! With a laugh in her voice & a smile on her lips she takes us through the process of turning stock silver into saleable works of art! It's perfect as it's exactly my message! I agree with you. It's great to have the best equpement, it can help a lot for obvious reasons. But learning the technique properly and practicing should always be the primary concern. The tools can help, but won't replace the skill. You know, there are different channels out there, maybe this guy really just focuses on showing what can be bought, but he's not interested in showing people how to use it 😃 We never know! if you feel you need extra ventilation you can get small desk top soldering fume extractors for around $40-50. They're intended mainly for people using soldering irons, so the filters will probably fill up faster with the type of soldering you do, but may be a worthwhile investment if it will be a long time before your able to upgrade your ventilation.

I will be changing my space within the next few months, and in the Spring I can keep the doors open for longer, so I probably won't be getting one right now, but I wish I knew this 3 years ago! 😃 Would be so helpful. Though I will keep that in mind for the next place, in case I will need something temporary before I get a proper system!

this is cool! i just recently upgraded my soldering station with a Orca torch, crucibles, and some ingots and its been pretty splendid ! the Orca torch is awesome I got it from Rio Grande and its compatible with a simple 14 oz propane can. I use Argentium silver and fine silver so I use a vinegar and salt mix for pickleing it just STANK! lol

@@TheArtOfMetalsmithing the Orca is much cheaper than the Smith little torch. It comes with 3 torch heads small medium and large. Plus there's a piece you twist to allow air in the area get into the tube so there is no need for an oxygen tank. Theres less fuss with in my opinion the same results.

Hi! What gauge wire do you use for binding your charcoal?? I use a small butane hand torch and am using copper at the moment (beginner haha) but I have trouble heating up larger pieces. I am very tempted to try the Charcoal! Absolutely love your videos and get very happy when you upload ☺️

Oh, you MUST try it, Katie!! It was a life changer for me, honestly! Don't wait. It's worth the money, it's my favourite surface to work on! Especially for copper, I reckon it will help you a lot. As for the gauge, I have no idea 😆 I just got it as a "binding wire", the one they offered and didn't look at the thickness. It looks like it's 0.8mm though, ot more than 1mm. Hi I’m just learning and I have a question on when to use an ultrasonic cleanser ? After polish ? Before polishing ? Can I put the metal into the ultrasonic after I’ve dipped it into the pickle pot or can I only use water after the pickle pot to clean the metal ? One more thing =) - I use Liver Of Sulfur to make my metal look old? When do I use the ultrasonic

Only little balls from fine silver. Haven't melted anything else yet, as I don't have a proper equipement (bigger torch and other bits)

I really wouldn't recommend soldering in your bedroom Rachel, it's not safe :( Kitchen would be much better, or any other place by the window. But if you have to use your bedroom and there is no way around it, it would be best to look into fume extractors and ventilation systems online. Good luck!

Is pickling necessary if you will already be cleaning up joints and polishing the piece after soldering with files, sandpapers, rotary tool burrs/brushes, etc?

I'd say yes - it cleans the metal and removes oxidation. It's much easier for me to see everything clearly and the piece can be properly handled when it's cleaned like this. I would highly recommend it - especially because sometimes there may be little spots where you can't reach with files and abrasives, and it will look unfinished , which is not a good look. I recently skipped final pickling with one of my pieces and it was a nightmare to clean it with abrasives. So much so that I just put the piece back in the pickle and then continued working on it 😅

Hi Katia, I'm not sure I understood what you're asking :)) But you move the cone yourself inside of the dish filled with just a tiny bit of water, to create the paste :) Think of it as griding herbs

it's not necessary and may make it hard to see what you're doing. You typically aren't staring at the flame while soldering and the metal shouldn't get hot enough to glow (unless your attempting to fuse the metal).

I would say it;s totally ok to start with! Absolutely :)) If it's something you want to do, then I'd say that it;s even essential to include some soldering in the early stages. It doesn;t have to be the first thing you do, might start with sawing, filing, learning how to operate the tools and principles. But I abolutely think that the earlier you can start with soldering, the better :)) Good luck!

What do you mean "quit the concern with ventilation"? Please elaborate, because misunderstanding this may be harmful to someone who then goes on to think that ventilation isn't necessary while working with toxic fumes.
