Thank you! I hope the video helps. The 2790G primer is very impressive. It is also VERY thick out of the can if you are using a 1.4 or 1.3 tip you will probably need to over reduce it to get a nice smooth flow. I ended up adding a out 20% more reducer with the gun I was using and had amazing results. I stick to about a 2 second drip on primers and it usually works well. Good luck 👍🏾

Question, my car was painted some years ago, over the years it developed some dings and chips. Can I body work and sand off the existing clear then apply a polyester primer or do you recommend a 2k primer? If so, what sand papers should I be using?
@3Wheels1Block2 жыл бұрын
Great question you can sand down with 400 grit paper in most cases. If you apply a polyester filler primer i would use a 2k over that or sealer before basecoat. Upsand with 800/1000 wet if you aren't using sealer, if you use sealer you can go straight to basecoat.

So if you had peeled paint and you plan on throwing epoxy primer on top, how do you smooth the edges of the peeled areas. Filler or sand down the affected area? Will filler adhere to raw aluminum?
@3Wheels1Block Жыл бұрын
If your paint is peeling and not just the clear coat I recommend sanding it down with 220 to bare metal (if rust is showing or 400 to the primer and then applying the epoxy primer. That EP will seal everything up and give you a good foundation for you to continue your bodywork on. I will follow up about aluminum.

im painting my truck indigo blue mettalic,, my truck didnt have alot of bodywork,,, so I didnt prime the whole truck, just spot primed it in spots.. alot of rock chips and a little damage on the corner of the hood, and the right fender.. Im hoping the primer spots dont show thru the paint being im using the black primer. most of the clearcoat has peeled off of the truck, so I plan to sand it down with 600, then a maroon scotchbrite and shoot it.. I know some paints cover better than others,,,, my neighbor painted a friends truck red, and the primer spots stuck out like a turd in a punch bowl.. do you find that fine mettalic colors dont cover as well as solid non mettalic colors, or does it just depend on the recipe?
@3Wheels1Block Жыл бұрын
If you are spraying a metallic paint I strongly recommend that you seal it 1st. This will give you a better, more consistent ground coat which translates a better finished basecoat. I have shit metallics over multiple bodyworked areas, unless you wet sand with 800-1000 grit you will almost always have issues. The sealer fills in scratches and provides consistent color. If that 600 is done be hand the scratches can still show, where as a DA will not.
@randy1ization Жыл бұрын
Ive been experimenting with wet sanding with my DA.. it seems to work very well. I use a squirt bottle and keep the area wet.. it helps rinse the sanding dust and keeps the pad clean. with less swirl marks. the sanding pad lasts alot longer too.. I would worry abt adhesion issues using 800 to 100 grit.. but if you havent had problems, I may give it a shot..
@3Wheels1Block Жыл бұрын
@@randy1ization 600 grit it typically ok wet, may have small scratches, but they usually hide ok. 800 wet is pretty much standard procedure.

Soon going to have sum space to actually work at our new house. 47 foot long garage will seem huge to me! But anyway, I am developing a minimalist approach to the products I buy and methods I use. Speedokote sealer, acrylic laquer primers, the cheapest Speedokote clear for dailies, Euro for a nice car, Glamour for a "show car". Polyester primer for a trainwreck. Ebay base coats unless its black or white then Speedokote. I spend a bit extra for the gold sandpaper. If line is critical, 3m fine tape. But Amazon yellow tape for everything else. It's easy to spend and overspend on products. Takes a while to see thru the hype and just get what you need. Get it down to basics. Kinda like Lakeside Auto. Old school guy who keeps his costs down. Oops, bit long on the commentary...

Congratulations on the big work space! I know I waited 12 years to get where I am now, it makes a huge difference. I agree, not all products are what they are cracked up to be. I've learned a lot and continue to learn. I have PPG & Speedokote and speedo really surprised me. It is very comparable to PPG, especially considering the price. I have used some other paints and not been very happy. I have migrated away from alot of cheaper paints because some just don't handle varied conditions well, humidity being a big one in the south. I still like to lay down some Rust-Oleum though😅.
@BearBudgetgarage2 жыл бұрын
@@3Wheels1Block rusty-oleum, say it ain't so🤣 Local shop sells Nason. Even that is pretty expensive by my budget. I have had decent luck with Autobahn base coat. So far anyway... In Michigan where high humidity is very seasonal. I do postpone if humidity is excessive tho. Speedokote prices helps keep rolling. And it's holding up to Michigan cold and snow so far. If something works and is priced right, I stick with it instead of jumping around. You get to know the products that way and exactly how and which ones to use for the job. Kinda keeps it simple. Which I like.👍
