You ever go offshore and see the fish on the bottom, macks, jacks, tunas, don't always stay up top. Also these fish have came in shallow so feeding from top to bottom in 40ft of water is nothing when they sometimes patrol several hundred ft of the water column. The float rig has a lot of uses/benefits. you can fish rough bottom areas, it will keep your bait from being covered in sand in the areas with a lot of sand shifts, reduce by catch and bait loss by things like nurse sharks. I think the scent spreads out more when the baits up higher.
@GulfCoastNation
@GulfCoastNation 3 жыл бұрын
Little lost on the point of the beginning of your comment but yes, suspended baits have other benefits like not getting crab and being more in the current in some situations spreading scent throughout

@@GulfCoastNation the first part was a comment on the part where you were saying that some of the makos by others are coming on non float rigs. Its like sometimes the mullet are on top or down on the bottom in the surf. I guess i was trying to say fish that usually feed up top may follow the bait when its down on the bottom. What did the mako yall caught have in its stomach?

Very cool video, great detail👍 Question... Why again don’t your recommend a spider vs. sandbag/cinderblock? Is it an issue of the upward pressure from the float/line that makes the spider hard to lodge? I’d rather not take a sandbag or cinder block, as the more weight on the yak the more it upsets the balance of the yak as you’d certainly agree, especially with 20+ extra pounds of sand in a bag. Thanks again guys for the great info.
@GulfCoastNation
@GulfCoastNation 3 жыл бұрын
Hey! Glad you enjoyed the video and yes the upward pressure makes it very tough/impossible to get the legs to stick! We have gotten them to hold it 15-17 ft over water but then you bait isn't suspended much at all. We typically drop in 23-35ft of water and that weight will not stick
@SH-ez5gf
@SH-ez5gf 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks fellas, that confirmation saves me from wasting time with the spider. I figured the physics of it + bait suspension probably wouldn’t work. Thanks again for the insight and keep up the great work👍

Do you also use those for recovery on case of cutoffs? They should breach the surface if you cut off assuming your leader is long enough? We fish Texas but cutoff city. At least we can drive on the beaches though!

@GulfCoastNation
@GulfCoastNation 3 жыл бұрын
Just in the winter! Don't run them in the summer. Your line is very very high in the water colum so any boat that runs between your float and the beach will catch your line. Also tippers will destroy it every 20 minutes haha

Hey, if you are talking about just the breakaway mono section that ties to the brick or "weight bag" we use 15 pound mono, and use maybe 5-8ft section. No need to use more than that

What would you do if you were 500+ yards off the beach and an oblivious boater ran through your line between between the kayaker and the reel? Would be a nightmare I'd imagine.
@GulfCoastNation
@GulfCoastNation 3 жыл бұрын
We run these rigs we run them in the winter time with low to no boat traffic off the beach. But in this situation it would stink with or without a float rig. We have had this situation come close to happening. Just be aware of boats and flag them down or wait for them to go by. But if you are caught like that and they don't see you. Drop the bait immediately and radio back to the beach to drop the rod tip. As long as you see the boat in enough time, which you should, the line will get below the prop quick enough!
@Tyler-kw9ce
@Tyler-kw9ce 3 жыл бұрын
@@GulfCoastNation that sounds like that would be your best option for sure. Wasn't meaning your specific rig just meant in general kayaking a bait in any fashion. But sounds like you guys have a plan for any potential issues that could arise. One thing you can always count on in FL is oblivious boaters. Also would of loved to seen that Mako cooked up!

@@GulfCoastNation I've never done any shark fishing intentionally. 99% of the time I'm trying to avoid a Shark or big AJ if I'm offshore. And inshore I fish Snook, flounder, reds, pompano, etc.. mostly fishing to harvest fish. But I really enjoy watching you guys fight big sharks on stand up gear. I know some guys here in NSB that do the same. They've landed some monster tigers and hammerhead! Looks like you guys have landed more then your fair share as well. Hope you get some serious growth in your channel this year!

I'm confused. It looks like in Terra Firm's picture (terrafirmatackle.com/products/lbsf-float-rig-kit-kayak-deployed-60-600lb-mono-and-12-800lb-cable) that the float is part of the apparatus that connects to the hook meaning the float is integral in getting the fish to shore. In the video, your setup had a barrel swivel that slid on the leader and it was crimped to the cable to the hook. Then you clipped the float to the barrel....making the float no part of the retrieval pressures of a big fish. Is the website's picture misleading or could you fight a fish with the float as a part of the retrieval?
@GulfCoastNation
@GulfCoastNation 3 жыл бұрын
This is the Panhandle version, you can order them when they come available again or request them when you order via the comment section! With the west coast style you just clip the float in-line. With the Panhandle style you clip them as shown in the video. The west style has no disadvantages because that float wire is through rigged so it retains the strength of the leader. Spencer designed the Panhandle style different for the shallower water we would be fishing making the float no inline with the rig.
