All I get for a code is "N/A."

That means a certain component isn't installed in your car. Nothing to worry about it was left out during manufacturing, more or less a feature that isn't included on your make and model of vehicle.

I am new to these code readers but what good does it do to erase trouble codes or even clear them, isn't the issue still there?? can it test my hybrid battery pack on my 2001 toyota prius?? if not, what cheaper bluetooth dongle could i get?

After you fix it you can clear the codes. Or you can clear them and see if the codes come back.
