The Bialetti Express is an all aluminium stovetop espresso maker, or you may refer to it as a Stovetop Percolator. It’s the ideal coffee brewer to make strong brewed coffee and you can easily take it on the road travelling or camping because of its compact size.
They come in various sizes from 2cups all the way up to 18 cups. Today I’ll be brewing coffee using the most common cup model.
What I’ll first do is weight out and grind my beans Today I’m using the Welhome Coffee Grinder and what I’ll usually do to get the right amount of coffee is simply use the filter basket to achieve that right amount of beans… you’ll never get it wrong this way ..but in weighing your coffee the basket holds approximately 30grams.
You want to grind your coffee to a fine grind. Nothing too coarse or your espressos won’t be strong enough.
Place the grounds in the basket and I’ll flatten down the grinds gently to create a smooth surface
Next, I'll fill up my heating vessel with water to just below the pressure valve, which is 250mls of water - and it’s best to use heated water to fill the vessel as this will speed up the whole brew time and make your coffee less bitter.
Place the filter basket on top ensuring the surface around the rim is free of any groundsAs we want it to make a nice seal when we screw down the coffee collector to seal the top of the heating vessel
Next place it on the stove on medium heat… you don’t want you’re water to boil too fast as this will again produce a bitter coffee so I’m aiming for a heat that lets the pressure gradually rise and then the water will slowly percolate through the bed of coffee.
It should take a total time of 5 mins or so to finish brewingIt will start off slow and speed up at the end and you’ll know when it is done as the water will begin spurting out, you don’t want to leave it on the stove if there’s any steam.Turn off your heat and pour out your coffee into your cups.I’ll enjoy my coffee straight black but they are the perfect strength to add some milk for a delicious flat white.In cleaning the unit, you do want to wait for it to cool down , rinsing it under cold water can speed this process up. Once it is cool, Unscrew the top, remove the filter basket and Tap out the grinds - so long as everything is cold, I find blowing on the end of the funnel gets the grinds out very easily., rinse everything under the water and it’s really important to keep everything thoroughly dry before placing it back together if you want to avoid any oxidation of the aluminium or build up of burnt coffee.
The Bialetti Express is the classic stovetop espresso maker. To produce fine espresso, you only need coffee, water, and a stove. You can take your beverage a step further by steaming some milk and making yourself a latte or flat white.
This moka pot is designed to force water vapor through ground coffee to produce Italian espresso in minutes. With air and coffee oils interacting with this intensity, a velvety crema forms a layer atop the rich espresso.
The Bialetti Express comes in seven different sizes to accommodate any family or coffee habit. The cup sizes are measured in 30 ml espresso cups.
The body is made from aluminum alloy, a food safe and durable material that won’t taint the flavour of your espresso. The handle and knob are built with black acrylic and can be handled when the aluminum is hot. We suggest sticking to warm water and soap for cleaning, and advise against using steel wool or a dishwasher.
Many around the world still own and use their 80 year old Bialetti Express moka pots. The device is simple and durable enough to continue to be a classic espresso maker.

Just a quick note that Bialetti recommends NOT pressing down your coffee grinds. I think doing this makes it harder for the water to pass through them. Just let them fall into the filter, shake it to level it out, and gently swipe away any excess. They also recommend low-medium heat when brewing.

@@katjarozantseva8069 My flame was too high initially. I place the Bialetti on the burner with the lid open and flame on to medium-low, then when I see the coffee come start to come out I set the burner to low, and then when it's almost full and bubbles start to turn light brown I close the lid and turn off the stove. When I don't hear any sputtering, I know it's done. Also clean after every use, and I use a scale for a consistent mass of beans. That's what works for me.

For those who are not comfortable with aluminium, Bialetti also offers their products in stainless steel. I am using the mokapot now for many years and once you get the grind size right, makes an excellent coffee. Of course straight out from the mokapot the brew is concentrated almost as an expresso. In order to make a good strong coffee I normally add the same amount of water. Depending on usage you need to clean the mokapot every 1-2 months with a mild dishwash detergent and a brush. Afterwards I run clean water with added lemon juice or similar on the stove and then another run just with water. The result is a sparkling clean mokapot without any old coffee residues or odour.

You don't have to put away the moka pot separately. Just make sure not to tighten it too tight. Just screw on the the parts just enough so it doesn't separate when you pick it up by the handle. You're risking dust, hair etc to get in the moka pot if you put them away separately.

You can just turn it upside down if you want to keep it clean inside, like people do with glasses, just gotta make sure it is thoroughly dried out. If it's stored in a cupboard though, as I'm sure most people don't leave it just sitting out, it should be pretty clean if left upright. I don't turn my glasses upside down and they are just fine.

Sounds great! I wouldn't say I skip it - but my personal routine is a quick rinse under the tap and either air dry or a quick towel dry - but I'm not too concerned about the build up of coffee oils - it's something I've gotten used to I guess with owning an Aeropress that I treat in the same way. Never had an issue 😀

Fill the funnel with coffee powder. Use a spoon handle or fork handle and run it on top of the funnel so the powder is under the funnels rim so its even. Preheat the stove top if using an electric stove at a low-3 dial and once pre heated, put the pot on the stove. Brew. Stir. Pour. There you go.

If the water spouts liee that at the end then the brewing process is incorrect. For a thick and proper brew you must make sure the coffee comes out gradually till the very end by either reducing heat once it start flowing or lifting the device once it starts brewing and placing back to rebrew gently so that it doesn't overheat. If the water spouts at the end then it has broken through the coffee puck formed inside. Whole process takes 2-3 min but the results are way better and the coffee is much richer and not bitter.

Yes, espresso grind will be okay - If you have the opportunity to adjust the grind - it should be slightly coarser than Espresso - if not just use less espresso grounds. - however - if you find it takes too long - or the Moka Pot completely gets blocked - limit the amount of grounds you place in the basket.

What is the use of the safety valve? I thought it should give a hissing sound when water has all boiled ?
@AlternativeBrewing
@AlternativeBrewing 3 ай бұрын
it's set to about 3 bar pressure. It's in truth not meant to be used often or at all - and is only a safety check in case the boiler gets blocked. Used too often there is a chance the safetly valve can get sticky or stuck from moisture and if so - then it will fail and the moka will pop off quite violently. So long as you're not packing the grounds basket too tight - or filling it with too fine a grind - you can always avoid this 🫶

Hi. Thank you. Question please: In the 6 cup version, can you make one cup measure? Or it has to be filled for the 6 cups measurement? I thank you.
@AlternativeBrewing

you can make 3 cup comfortably. So half the capacity - but no less 🫶

A mess that'd be hard to clean up I think. I've tried this with less complicated brewers (Aeropress/V60) and the coffee it extracted was weak and warm - not hot and delicious like I was hoping for 😂 - so from past experience and looking at what the Moka Pot is - I wouldn't recommend it

I just got mine and have a question. In reading the directions, it says to brew 3 times and throw away the coffee. Says not to drink it but it also says to fill it with water first. So am I only using water for the first three brews? Or coffee? Thank you in advance😊
@AlternativeBrewing
@AlternativeBrewing 3 жыл бұрын
yes - you don't need to waste coffee- but just fill with water - let it boil up and repeat the process three times before using 👌

May I ask which pot size is best for making a single lungo size (l think around 110ml) expresso?
@AlternativeBrewing
@AlternativeBrewing 2 жыл бұрын
Given that Bialetti count a cup as 30ml. I would be looking at the 4 Cup brewer as the ideal size for around 110ml coffee brewed every time 😀

Does it matter how hot the water you put in the bottom is?
@AlternativeBrewing
@AlternativeBrewing 3 жыл бұрын
Hot water will make it brew quicker to begin with and create a quicker contact/brew time ... whereas cold water will have a gradually increase in temperature and a longer contact/brew time.. although the coller water, will also extract less at the earlier stage, so it's a bablacne of getting the right heat on the stove and total time - which at best shouldn't exceed 2-3 mins from the first coffee you see in to the top of the pot.

I'm a Nespresso coffee drinker and have never prepared my own coffee. As a Newby for using this bialetti device, would it be better to buy grinded coffee or grind it myself (I've heard that entry to mid level coffee grinders can give horrible results, unless one prefers investing much more in a higher end grinder)
@AlternativeBrewing
@AlternativeBrewing 8 ай бұрын
This may sound crazy but freshly ground coffee prior to brewing is far far greater quality and flavour than pre-ground is. I would always opt for fresh ground if it's within my budget. There are some great grinders out there low cost - some hand grinders - some automatic - ultimately you will spend more on the grinder then the Brewer - but it will make all the difference 🫶
