Since some devices on Bitwig are very hard to understand, i will be breaking them down for you so you can use it with no problems at all. On this occasion we will talk about the FM-4 synth.

Another nice tutorial. Keep up the good work. I have an alternative perspective on the way to look at these bitwig instruments. FM4 has not been designed "without" a filter. FM4 has been designed as part of a larger instrument (the DAW itself) which allows you to add an unlimited amount of filters. The fact that you can click on AEG and modulate another stock filter (and even another 3rd party filter) means that FM4 does not "come without a filter". It means that Bitwig itself is not just a DAW, it is itself an instrument, for which FM4 is but one module. FM4 is at the same time - a module, AND it is an instrument. Bitwig itself can be compared to something like Cherry Audio Voltage Modular or ACV rack. It's difficult to see this when thinking about Bitwig as only a DAW. It is, at the same time, a modular instrument.

Great comment, and yeah. Is like you say you can add devices and put together a Frankenstein. But, most people just want to get a sound, nerds like you and me like to play and try. Sometimes you need to give the people what they want, which might be not the smartest device. I like it, don't get me wrong is simple..but powerful, and with a bit of experimentation you get really cool sound.

@@XNBeatsMusic I think what you are doing with these tutorials is educating people so the zen of bitwig is not the domain of nerds. Bitwig caters for the newbie with a handful of presets showing off the Frankenstein possibilities. The craziness of a frankenstein setup is part of the excitement of being new to bitwig and having undiscovered territory. I like that bitwig didn't cater to instant gratification. If new users want to make their own Frankensteins, they must come get it or be content with presets. I think people need to start making presets for bitwig the same way the do for synths like Vital, serum, and the way they used to for massive. Bitwig has the means for this through their packages but it needs to be more popular. I think Bitwig will eventually overtake these other Dinosaurs. They are boring. One can hope. Look at fruity loops. It's severe limitations but it's the most popular DAW. I think we need to take their spot.

@@TerenceKearns Yeah, but you know what. Most people, on vital or serum don't edit presets. Most, toggle hundreds of presets until one fits the track. You and me know that is like wining the lottery. This is because most, want to get a sound but have no idea how to edit or to use the synth. That's why I made this channel, to help people learn the process and get to the "aha !!!" earlier. As soon as I run out of devices to talk, about bitwig I mean. I will do Ableton, and the FL or Studio one. I don't want this channel to be about bitwig, I want it to be about production and music. Of course, for mixing and patches and NON specific DAW topics, bitwig will be my weapon of choice. And I really hope bitwig grows, because the lack of respect and support from main companies is just annoying.

@@XNBeatsMusic Y,eah I've been using Studio ONE for years - recording bands and mixing. But before that it was Reaper and Ableton (since V3). I do think that learning should be principle-based and not product specific, but bitwig truly is unique in this way that it completely blurs the lines between plugins as self-contained functions, and the DAW as a modular instument. There is no other DAW that does this. Max for Live is the closest potential but it's completely different. Bitwig utterly is unique which is why FM4 has unlimited filters, envelop generators and LFOs :) That does not translate to any other mainstream DAW out there (freakishly niche tools like Buzz Machines and SunVox aside).

@@XNBeatsMusic I totally agree with you about instant gratification and presets. I often rely on presets when working quickly to slap up a concept.

Well done on another great tutorial. FM has a reputation for being highly complex -and to some degree it is. But to understand it better, one has simply to roll up ones sleeves and get stuck in, and try out different combinations of oscillators, modulations and level blending. Plus applying the numerous combinations of Bitwig's own modulators can take you to unexpected sound places you didn't think a possible. More often than not I find with FM that less is more in the tweaking department. Looking forward to your next tutorial. Thank you.

Yes, i love FM. The thing is it doesn't give you what you want right away if you are learning. But once you know the process the amount of sounds you can get is mindblowing. Got an opsix from korg, it's just fantastic. I will in a little while start covering Hardware synths and opsix is going to be fun.
