How did I NOT know about these rulers! I've been "piecing" since 2008 and I join a lot of mystery quilts, and I do get anxious about all of the "cut 200 strips, then sub-cut those strips into a gazillion squares" instructions because I know how long it will take me to do so with a full-time job and grandkids wanting my attention lol. This Stripology ruler is a wish come true for me. No more hours upon hours of cutting or, if you are like me and like to cheat, buying pre-cut 2.5" squares. Thank you for this tutorial, especially the close-up so we can get a good look at where to place the ruler to cut correctly.

I have this ruler... I didn't purchase it a Fat Quater Shop, however, after making a purchase with FQS, they are my go to when looking for sewing items that interest me... The cost of the ruler equals value, since you can use it for so many different cuts. The only suggestion I would recommend on the video is to explain the folding of the fabric for standard bolt width, using of a fat quarter and breaking down a layer cake. It wasn't until I went to Creative Grids and watched their video, that you then understand the folding of the fabric.

I absolutely love this product! I have bought several adjuncts to help me cut straight strips, and this one is the best. I do have one suggestion: When I cut, I found that my bottom and top folds need to be completely parallel to one another. If the top fold is not straight across (or parallel to the bottom) it will cause a small "bump" or reverse bump to appear where the fold is (on each edge). I also found that the bottom black edge that lines up with the bottom fold is too close to the open "tear drop shaped" area where the rotary cutter starts it's cut. The black line should be another inch above it's present placement. The reason I say this is because the tear drop shaped opening allows for a slight pivot of the rotary blade, enough to cause the same "bump" or inverse bump as described above. When this happens, the strip edges will rise or dip at the fold area. To compensate for the possibility of the blade pivoting, I move the 2nd black line to the bottom fold (second line from the bottom above the tear drop opening). The 2nd black line guarantees that I will have some room to start my blade, and by the time it reaches the fold, it is not going to pivot, as I am well out of the tear drop area. The drawback to moving the 2nd black line down, is that you have now shortened the height of the stripology ruler. I have practiced this technique, first using the 1st black line (closest to the tear drop opening) as demonstrated in your video, and have compared it to using the 2nd black line, instead. Each time proved out the possibility of the bump or inverse bump appearing at the first fold. I also used this technique with and without checking the absolute parallel of the top fold, and found it consistent as well. (not measuring the top fold straight across, and parallel to the bottom had the same results.) Thank you, and I hope this helps anyone who is having a problem with the fold areas. Again, Great Product!

I love this ruler and use it for sure. Took me a while to figure it out then I found videos at their site and it was teriffic help. I also bought another Stripology ruler but a smaller version of this one and wow I just love that one tooooooooooooooo!!!

Yes, similar to the June Tailor pro ruler but sturdier, has better markings, and the Creative Grids grippy circles on the back. Bought one last year to replace my JT ruler.

thanks for the video! I have the ruler & I love it. But can you add some info about how to fold the fabric correctly for the ruler? My folding is never quite right sometimes my strips look weird in the end.

This ruler needs to be about 1/2" taller so it can be used with Moda 44" fabric. I first have to cut off the selvages to use fabric that wide.

Hi Stephanie! You can use the Stripology ruler to cut larger squares, it will mainly depend on the size of the fabric you're cutting from. If you want 4" squares, you would start by cutting at the 0" mark and then the 4" mark (and 8", 12", etc. as much as your fabric allows in 4" increments), then you would turn your mat to cut the other direction across your fabric, and cut at the same markings. Make sure that the Stripology ruler extends past the edges of your fabric when you're cutting. Hope this helps!

Try to hold the ruler about half way up as you would any other ruler; I have used mine quite a bit and have never had any slipping. Good luck!

How does this work with yardage? I have 5 yards that I have to cut. Should I cut it down into small pieces? help, no one shows how this is done with a lot of fabric!

It is possible to use this ruler with a long piece of yardage but for better manageability you will probably want to trim it down some. No bigger than your cutting mat I'd say. Thanks for your question!

Is it difficult to push the rotary cutter through the slots? It seems like she was having to put lots of pressure on her rotary cutter. I just ordered one through your shop and I have a disability that involves my hands. I am hoping that this ruler will be the answer to my cutting needs. Is there a specific rotary cutter that works well with this ruler? Thanks for your help and thanks for sharing this video with us!!!

The slits are a little ‘tight’ the first few times, but after using it a few times they loosen up a little. Don’t think the rotary cutter type makes much difference, but should be using a sharp blade!

Hello Jane! The CQD Strip Tube Ruler does work differently than the Stripology ruler. The Stripology ruler is intended to help you cut strips from fabric, and the Strip Tube ruler is intended to help cut diagonally pieced blocks from strip sets.

I'm ruler OCD and so of course I have 3 of these, even though I never use any of them and that's because every time I use this ruler my strips are wonky. Why is that? You know when you cut the strips, when you fold it. The folds....after I cut the fabric is NEVER straight. It's always wonky. Not sure how to describe it but it drives me insane and so I don't use it.

Lol :) The first one I had was almost exactly like the large stripology ruler but it was from June Taylor, so I thought maybe I should try the large Stripology ruler, it also had squares to cut and different measurements so I thought maybe it would be different?? Then I decided maybe I should try the smallest stripology ruler. Maybe if I can master the smallest one I'll find it easier with the big one. So now I have 3 of them and I honestly prefer a different way to cut, so I've wasted a lot of money. Learn the hard way I guess?

@@paulasydney I know this is an old post but I am going to reply anyway. Do you line up your selvages? Material can be cut wonky and you address that by moving the selvages so that you have an even fold at the bottom. Your selvages may then be wonkly but the material will be on the straight grain. I didn't know this for a long time!

Trish, these folks just have nothing better to do than criticizing others who are trying to do positive work by sharing their knowledge. Things people notice in these free videos are amazingly disappointing to me. Those with nothing good to contribute will always find fault in the goodness of others. I was more interested in what she was teaching than what was happing with her. Didn’t even noticed she was wearing glasses. This is why this world is in the shape it is (because of those types who look for faults instead of goodness).
