Better late than never! I'm 75 years old, been playing since I was 15 years old and the more I learn, the more there is to learn. Learning drums is a wonderful adventure. I started in rock and switched over to jazz about a year later, when I discovered Joe Morello's, "Take Five". He showed wonderful skill at a low volume. By the time I turned 18, I was moonlighting as a jazz drummer in local resorts, playing for dance parties and watching couples dance to my rhythm. What a great feeling! I've been playing part-time ever since. Also, learn all you can about playing with brushes which is another great adventure. Don't worry about speed. It will come naturally. Focus on time, volume and rudiments. I'm still learning and I try to practice everyday.

Wow... This video is an overwhelming amount of ammunition for self-study. There are so many ideas here which, on their own, could lead to hours of practice/playing/fun. I wont claim that I'm going to try them all - but for 6 minutes spent on a very simple concept, I'd say this video is invaluable. I'm now a Maricle fan!

Sounds great, and it looks like the cheapest, entry-level steel Tama snare you can find. Those things are like $50 on Craigslist all day.

A great player can make any functional instrument sound a million bucks, and with acoustic instruments ( like a drumkit ) that's even more obvious than with electric ones.

So do I. How tight should the batter side of my snare be. It's pretty tight now but doesn't give me the rebound I want. I want that crisp snare sound. I have added a wider snare wire and tried adjusting the wire to different tensions but I can't seem to find that crisp sound. I'm a rookie so forgive my ignorance. My resonant side is table top tight and so is my batter side and I'm afraid to tighten it any more. Any suggestions? I'll wait for a reply. Thanks ahead of time.

I love the snare. I just commented this elsewhere, but it looks like a real low budget, 1980s Tama Rockstar DX. Like an Acrolite, it's hilarious to see this "cheap" snare in the hands of a master.

I like how she used the sticking, feel and timing of the triplet to show how the 5 stroke can swing. She also illustrated (by showing, not talking) on how important it is to be loose when you're trying to swing! I'm going to work on this right now! I have gotten this feel (somewhat) by doing singles but doing doubles can be a greater economy of motion; getting more with less effort.

Yes !! Being clean/ clear is one of the most important things when it comes to the sound & one of the most difficult things to do when it comes to musical instruments / music ! That sets you apart away from others ( both technically/ skilfulness & sound wise )! Pianos , guitars ,bases ,drums !!!,even vocals especially when we hit very very high notes ! 👍💜💜💜💜🥁🎵🐉🎤🎶💕💞
