The song at 5:46 proves that minor chords don't necessarily sound "dark".

Merci beaucoup for this. I'm still a Nooby and have just starting to work on my ear training. I'm playing the melodic and harmonic minors with my practices, but haven't taken it any further. But listening to this video shows me the work that I have to put in since for the first 65 years of my life I wasn't interested. Now it's become a passion.

Bro your an absolute legend. Because of these I enjoy understanding the minute points of music theory. Excellent! One thing that has always eluded me though is that in any particular scale for instance major 7 tone scales they have 7 names ie: F Ionian is also G Dorian which is also A Phrygian etc... so for any progression that I write how would I know which of these is the correct name for it. I have searched high and low and I can't find anything on this so maybe an idea for another video maybe?... you would be the only one as far as I can see... anyway kudos to you for all you do and thank you so much you are a godsend.

Thanks for the kind words, it's great to hear that the videos help you. What you are mentioning are the modes of the major scale. I have a video about modal chord progressions : kzbin.info/www/bejne/amTcfHmVjtZ9hKc also available in a playlist : kzbin.info/aero/PLxJaS3gjOSqqvvZWuj-yq5AwRZ7f7Ui15 You're right in thinking they all have the same notes / chords. The way you define which one you are using is by the tonal centre of the song. In chord progressions this would usually be the I chord, also called the tonic, and the chords that lead to this chord. It's where the music feels at rest and at home. This isn't always clear, but if you are writing a song it's for you to decide! I mention it a bit in the linked videos, but I could probably do a dedicated video about it at some point.
