Thanks - I use this so rarely that EVER time I want to use it, I have to look it up again!! Even though I only use it rarely, it is a very useful function. The other one I like is 'conditional formatting' - and the same with it... I have to learn it over every time, because as useful as it is, I don't use it often enough to have it stored in my 'wetware' memory (between my ears)!!

I need to create a formula where If the dollar amount in a different cell is => 200,000.00 I need to multiply that number by 35%, If under 200,000.00 multiply by 27%. Can you help me with this question?

Question, I am trying to create some basketball cards from a game called Statis Pro Basketball. The defense rating for individual players are a difficult thing to gauge. Cool, ok... I have designed a couple of worksheets for a basketball game that I play. I've used basketball reference on line to download my stats and player ratings. The problem I have is before 1974 the NBA doesn't have a individual defensive stats, so I created a matrix and used each teams points against stat as my baseline for assigning defensive ratings to players. I know a bit confusing! Now here is what I want to do. I want to create a cell that when I plug in a number (Boston was 6th in the league in giving up points) let's say 6. Then the spread sheet will go to column 6 and look down the rolls and match it with the 15 players that I have for the team. The players will be assigned 1-15 based on how many times they fouled in the season. Have I lost you? Okay out of those 15 in their order in the 6th column, their will be the ratings for defense that I have: Minus 10 Minus 9 Minus 8 And so on until all 15 are assigned a defensive rating.

If I'm understanding you correctly, you can do this using the VLOOKUP function. But the lookup value (first argument of the function) must be in the 1st column of your data. If you make it the 6th column, the function won't work. If it really must be the 6th column, you can create an intermediary lookup table to shift the column positions.

Thanks. The if function is quite easy for me. In scenarios where VLOOKUP and HLOOKUP don’t work, I have been using repeating if functions. Like IF,AA=3,1,IFAA=4,2,IFAA=5,3,3. Is there anyone I can simplify this without having to use if function over and over?

Excel seems to be unfortunately missing variables for functions, which you would see in other programming languages such as preprocessor Less CSS, Javascript, etc.
