Excellent piece of kit. In the past I would have put my bike into the local bike shop to get my gear and brake cables changed. Now with this kit I've saved a small fortune in replacing both set of cables on all of my bikes...well done Park tools.

Just worked a treat on getting housing for an internally-routed dropper post through a carbon hardtail frame. BB area was impossible without the IR-1 (or removing the BB, probably). Whoever designed this tool deserves a Nobel Prize!

I didn't know Park Tools had this kit--thanks so much! Do you have a video that shows a complete installation of Shimano Di2 on a road bike? I plan to install a complete Ultegra Di2 system on a frame.

there is always a way, a little heat shrink, string trimmer line, neo magnets, crazy glue make your own( unless the park tool is cheap-unlikely) magnetic couplers will a rough time in a steel frame( thats why He said everything but steel) if your bike frame has a lot of "reluctance" the locating magnet may not work.

my Cube bicycle has a brush in the down tube, am I supposed to remove it before wiring a new cable in? I cannot move cables easily with the brush inside, but I do not have a large opening for operating pliers either (I would need to enter a small fissure and reach some 10 cm inside)

do the hydraulic tubes ever get punctured/leak by the metal edges in the frame holes?

+neil crompton that is a possibility, but certainly not a likely one.

just wondered as the brakes lines would be under pressure every time the brakes are applied,does the factory clean up the sharp edges in the holes?
@parktool
@parktool 8 жыл бұрын
That's a question for the frame manufacturer. A responsible mechanic should absolutely check the routing holes for sharp edges prior to running cable housing or hydraulic lines.

How about Titanium? Will the magnets function against a Titanium frame ? If I remember correctly titanium is not magnetic , but I could be wrong. Thanks.
@parktool

Neither titanium or aluminum are magnetic.
@kevinmccune9324
@kevinmccune9324 2 жыл бұрын
@@parktool cool fact you can magnetize Aluminum( with an alternating field) some of the strongest magnets you can buy are alloyed with aluminum( many teslas) if the titanium has little reluctance you should be able to pass a magnetic field.

Heh... That Di2 Adapter wouldn't have worked with the ports I had to use to get my Di2 wiring done. Because of the preinstalled Wiring Guides inside the frame ( CF tubes inside the frame ) and the necessity to have the 4-Port hub located somewhere inside I was forced to route the Di2 wire coming from the Handlebar through one of those tubes exiting behind the bottom bracket and then back into the frame via port JUST barely wide enough to fit a Di2 connector wrapped ONCE with a super thin electrical tape. Maybe make use of the actual connection inside?

Excellent piece of kit but having to resort to magnets in order to route cables is just lazy engineering on the part of the bike manufacturer. Either do it right (santa cruz comes to mind) or just use external routing.

For my bike, the tool was of no use. Luckily, it (the tool) was a gift. My cables are stainless steel, barely magnetic. The frame holes are barely large enough to permit the passage of the derailleur cables. There is no tool in this kit that would pass through the holes and grasp my derailleur cables.The brake cables passed with a tool made from a bent and ground down spoke to grasp them and fish them out. The IR-1 was of no use. For derailleurs, I passed a cable backward and superglued a length of thread to it, then glued the thread to the new cable and pulled it back through. No cost. Still a pain in the butt.

The IR-1.2 is designed for non-steel frames. The magnets stick immediately to steel, and will not work their way through the frame.

Unfortunately if your frame is not drilled for internal routing you cannot install internal routing. Some custom frame manufacturers will drill holes for internal routing on a used frame. Good luck with the project!
