I was asked a question about how to use Irish stick fighting for combat. Here is my reply. I hope this answers the question.
Since original publishing of this video I was promoted to full instructor by Glen Doyle himself. He promoted me St. Patrick's day 2022.
I practice the Doyle system of Bataireacht.

Also for self defense in the West it is a lot easier to pull off walking with a shillelagh or bata, then escrima sticks or a quarter staff, unless you want weird looks, & possibly having a conversation with law enforcement.

Doyle bata is also an awesome training style for in-fighting in general. I have learned more about the nature of close range boxing/mma tactics from Doyle bata than from doing boxing itself!

Train some boxing then experiment with your boxing techniques while holding a stick. You won't learn all the intricacies of the system but you will be able to use it functionally for self-defense.

Would love to see some videos on what you have learned. I am trying to find online curriculum for the Doyle system, but so much info, & emails for Glen are no good. Thanks for any help. Also Travis makes a beautiful bata!

I think the Irish style is superior to the filipino style. It is inherently much safer and accurate due to the thumb-backed grip, and it's mixed two-handed/one-handed guard makes it easier to transition into grappling when your opponent closes the distance. FMA is great for machetes and knives, and I love the abstract and universal way that FMA teaches about attack angles, but for stick self-defence,bata is the way to go.
